It was not easy for Kendra to assimilate that his pack had abandoned him to his fate just because he wanted to go for his friend, the only one who cared for him and the most defenseless in that pack where he had been converted six months ago when he had an accident with some wolves. He was badly injured, but Emma found him and took him to the reservation to be bitten by her Alpha, and turned him.
But now that he was being bathed by two young female omegas he wondered how bad it could have been. When he was reunited with Emma, only on the third day after her disappearance she looked like an angel who had been given a second chance to shine and live. Her eyes were bright with concern but before that, they had all welcomed him warmly as if she had been part of them from her whole life, and they had healed him just because he was her friend.
When he had awakened, she told him that he should go to the bathrooms and there two young women stripped him of his clothes and bathed him. Which did not bother him at all but it certainly made him feel uncomfortable, since he had never been bathed before, he usually always cleaned himself. As he got out of it, they helped him dress in strange linen and denim clothing that was soft but agile and then led him into a hallway where he saw Emma.
Emma smiled at him.
—You're ready?
—For what? —he asked confused. She wasn't alone. Three betas were with her, he could recognize the silver hair one and were the red hair and brown hair as well—. What's happening? Are they gonna kill me? —without noticing, his smell gives a fear signal.
She denied it with her head.
—They're gonna accept you on the herd, you must know the alpha first —she said, happy.
Kendra smiled too, it was good to see her happy even if he was so confused about it. How could they accept him just like that? What about the test? But Farrell told him that they would kill him once he got in their territory. Maybe was a white lie.
—How do you... What did you do? —he feared she was put her hands on the fire because of him.
—I didn't do anything but they decided that you're staying... If you want to do it, tell me.
—What if I don't? —he looked at the betas.
—They'll let you go with the condition that you never came back and leave us alone —she was serious then—, and we're not gonna be able of seeing each other never. So tell me.
—What do you want?
—I want you to stay —she gave him such a maternal smile—, but if you don't wanna stay I can't force you to. You can go back to the Farrell's pack and... well, whatever you want, I guess.
—A couple of days ago you didn't stop talking of how you could make the things get better in the pack and now you don't even dare to call it your pack —he frowns —. Why?
—Kendra, you don't understand —she whispered.
—No, I don't understand. Why don't you explain it to me? —he insisted.
It was surprising how the betas just waited for them to make up their minds, they didn't rush things and they didn't interfere. Emma pursed her lips before licking them and looking at her only friend with her head wrapped in memories, she lowered her head.
—I'm sorry but I think you really can't understand it. I think you're right, it's better to you to go.
—I'm not going anywhere without you —he growled.
—Very well then —they heard a voice in the hallway, and when the two of them turned, the blonde was smiling. Just Emma and the betas reverenced him but the brunet was confused—. I guess that means that we have to give you a warm welcome to our pack. Good morning everyone, by the way.
Emma raised her to look at him just to see how he yawned. He just left the chambers where they were going, the sultan Soleil's bedroom, their alpha. The very place where she used to attend the persons and the matters of the pack and empire, like Gale explained the last night. That made her look suspicious to the sultan, but he hadn't any vital sign that could make her know what was going on there.
—What? —Kendra asked incredulously.
—I'm not going anywhere —she was firm—. If you wanna stay, you'll be welcome and I'm going to thank you for that honesty. I am really happy to see you again but I won't go, I'm happy here.
—Happy? You've been here like three days, you can't say you're happy —the brunet complained.
She sighed.
—Look Kendra, I was in that crappy pack for four years and you just six months. You don't know the hell I had to suffer this whole time, here I can breathe with freedom —she pointed.
—Breath with freedom? —he repeated—. ¡But it's like a damn jail in here! Look, out there are like five hundred walls to get into this town, another thousand to get into this fortress. What freedom are you talking about?
—In fact, they're one thousand and a hundred walls. Rookie's mistake —the sultan smiled.
Kendra just looked at him with incredulity. And Emma would have continued arguing with him if it hadn't been for the doors to the front rooms being thrown open, revealing a handsome woman with black hair tied up in a pigtail and dark brown eyes watching her steadily.
They all get quiet. Each breath she took weighed more than a hundred weights on her chest, the scent of lemon and lavender calming all the betas and even Emma and the unwanted guest in the hallway. They were all bewitched by the force of the Alpha, and it had only just appeared. She exhaled hard and locked her eyes with the above.
—Usually, the people are advised about our costumes —the cold voice made them have goosebumps, the alpha was angry—, like not look me at the eyes, reverence, call me your highness... But I'm gonna let this pass given the circumstances.
Even the sultan bowed his head.
—My name is Soleil and this is my pack, now I'm your alpha and you'll obey me and only me.
The roar she emitted was enough to make them shiver. The sultan just looked at the floor. ¡Damn, she's hot! He bites his lip. Emma looked over her friend and they both just fell to their knees. She watched again the black-haired. It looked too sexy for someone that just get up in the morning.
—You may retire now, he already knows me —she ended the conversation and her eyes were on the blond before she gets away to get back to her chambers. The guards closed again immediately.
The sultan sighed. Her humor in the mornings was probably the reason why he always goes out early from her chambers, she could kill him without hesitation. Everyone just blinked.
—Well, you already knew your worst nightmare in person —he smiled and watched the omegas with fun—, she is our alpha and she is not a morning person. Get up off the ground and walk with Gale to your classes —he ordered then, kindly.
Emma was the first to rise and blink, emerging from the spell that the Alpha's voice had inflicted upon herself. It was like going into a trance, she had heard of it, of Alphas who were so powerful that with their mere presence they could even inhibit the betas, she corroborated it when the silver-haired woman and even the sultan lowered their heads against their instincts. She didn't want to see the Alpha furious.
—Um —she cleared her throat—. Shall we?
The redhead snapped out of his temporary astonishment and nodded, as he helped her lift Kendra off the ground. He was delirious with the Alpha's deadly beauty. The sultan only smirked and turned when he saw them standing, to disappear down the hall with the two older betas behind him. Emma watched him go silently and then looked at her impulsive friend, while she denied.
Inside his chambers, the alpha growled in despair as soon as the betas left. He knew her beloved Soleil was angry because of what he had told her, that had no doubt, usually, she would never have behaved in that way in front of a rookie and much less a novice in the pack, but she was furious. Even being in his room, which was practically on the other side of the palace, he could smell those pheromones exhilarated by what he had said.
And of course, she had the right to be angry, in all that time that had passed, he had managed to control himself very well, but that morning when he had woke up with one of his favorites named Alice, he realized that he missed something. Soleil's heat was close.
Of course, the lady had the power and the right to sleep whenever she wanted with anyone (both from the entire empire and her pack, including him) who wanted, he had given her that power when they both rose to their current positions, but he never believed that this would impede him.
He closed his eyes when he sat on the edge of his bed, remembering the events of the morning. Skipping the part where he bathed, he would kick the girl out of his bed, ask for his room to be cleaned, and walk to the palace kitchen for a couple of sandwiches before heading to the rooms where Soleil tended to people.
—Come in.
When he gets in, the alpha was set on the floor while reading quietly some book. She didn't even look at him, they both knew who he was.
—What made you come so early? I thought you had classes today.
—I canceled them.
He sat next to her but she didn't look at him and kept reading.
—Oh, too bad. How was Alice tonight? —she turned her eyes to him for a very second and then back to her book. With Alice, she meant the girl who spent the night with him.
It was custom that the sultan's mother takes care of his harem, but in this case, since he didn't have one, it was his Alpha who was in charge of sending the women to his bed.
And he could never complain since she knew what kind of women sent to him.
—Efficient, as always —his answer was automatic.
Over the years, he had realized that the questions Soleil asked him were never really because he was interested in knowing about his s*x life and how much some female had made him enjoy, but because it was a good way to evade any intention of hers to talk about it. past or future. Although they should be together as the clause said, they never had been, Soleil always put the pack before her wishes.
—Your heat is coming —he said. She didn't like it, her smell became acid—. I want your child, Soleil. Let me be with you this time, this heat. I've waited for you too many years...
The alpha frown before gets up, so he did.
—Get out of here —was the only thing that she said.
—But...
—I said get out of here —she growled, and even if he didn't want it to, the blond bow his head.
—Just think about it —he begs without rise his head.
His inner wolf made a plaintive sound and then left the room. That was when the sultan met the others and heard the verbal fight taking place a few meters from the room, he ran his hand through his hair and yawned to hide and calm himself, before heading towards them.
Still, with his hand over his head, knowing he had screwed it all up because his beloved alpha was evasive when she put her mind to it. He exhaled as he raised his hand, then Idris came in with his head bowed.
—Yes, sir?
—Bring Emma to my chambers —he ordered, as he looked at the ceiling.
His skin was burning.
He had to spend at least an hour reinforcing what he was beginning to understand with Gale, as Gale was teaching Kendra too. They were both asking questions and talking quietly, when they heard the door open, Idris looked at Gale and asked him to come closer. They spoke for a moment before Gale gestured for Emma to come closer.
—Something's wrong?
—The sultan request you in his chambers —that made her hands sweat by the nervous—. Follow Idris, they're gonna dress you up, I'll take care of your friend. Don't worry.
—Ah, alright —she didn't pretend to hide that she liked the idea that the Sultan wanted to see her, less alone, and she followed the brown-haired beta at once.
—It's early for you to leave —Kenneth saw her trying to get out. The alpha just looked at him and ignored him, he insisted—. Where are you going now?
—That doesn't matter, Ken —she advised with a growl, while walking to the stable from the south of the castle, she stopped—. What do you want?
—As your counselor, I must tell you the things do not work this way.
—Idris didn't advise Noah the same way —she sighed—, at this moment Emma is going to his chambers. Or suddenly her heat came back?
Kenneth opened his eyes.
—Whatever, he has the right to make what he wants as I do too —she pointed herself and then get in the stables. There the horses whinnied at the presence of the alpha and she closed her instincts until there was nothing but the sound of their cute friends—. I'm gonna ride. If you want, and I know you're gonna do it without my permission, you can come with me.
With that said, she walked over to a black-eyed white horse to lead him out of the cabin. She did not like saddling horses as the animal part of her knew well how uncomfortable it was trying to be dominated by another species, so she always rode without a saddle. Kenneth was another case.
—Are you angry because he's with other females? —he asked at her.
—You mean that makes me angry? If that were the case I would never send him one every night —she said, stroking the white hair of her favorite horse—. You see this bow here? His name is Abbott, his my favorite. I always ride him and I like how he understands me and accepts me.
Kenneth frown.
—The black one's name is Costello and by his side is Donatello. They both like me and they're my favorites too but with Abbott, I have a more special connection. He's much more important —she continued—. I wouldn't change Abbott for Costello or Donatello, but surely if one new horse came to my stable and I liked him... I will be going to him immediately and ride him.
—So you're Abbott in here. Aren't you?
Soleil smiled.
—Reyham —she corrected him—, would be Abbott. Costello, Narges, and Donatello, Ayze.
—Where are you?
—I don't belong to the harem or the sultan, I'm free —she said kindly. Kenneth ended up saddling the horse—. I'm not an omega or a novice in heat. My life is mine, doesn't belong to anyone else, much less to someone like Noah. We chose this style of life and we've lived this way for ten years.
—Got it but I don't understand what does he want.
—What made you so angry to want me to join you? —the once who was once her "nanny" laughed.
The woman only lowered her head to make the jump that would put her on the horse's back.
—He wants a child —Once on top, she grasped the horse with her legs and hands.
Kenneth got on his horse with the help of the saddle stirrups, once up, his hands held the shaft and the ropes. He glanced at his Alpha and when the woman gave the order, they both began to ride, rushing out of the stables.
—What's wrong with that?
—With me —she replied before making the horse start galloping.
Instead, Kenneth gripped the reins so hard that the horse braked hard and almost fell. He hadn't wanted to believe that he had heard right but he knew he had, which had knocked him out. It was true that both had the right and if they wanted to, if they had a son, that son would be in great danger because he would be the next heir to the throne. It was no use that Reyham's son was the Sultan's firstborn, and that would create a new rivalry in his pack.
Even if it was the law and no one could do anything about it.
—Are you that tired? —he heard her tease a few feet away and then shook his reins to move again. Once he was on a par with her alpha, she smiled sadly at him—. I'm not ready, I don't want it to.
—I... I don't know what to tell you —he confessed, embarrassed.
He knew better than anyone what that meant to her. The reason why she was so concerned about, he understood well that thanks to her past, she would refuse to have to go through something like that again but sooner or later it had to happen. If it weren't with the sultan... She would one day have to mate and have offsprings.
—It smells like a wet dog —she complained then when they were reaching the town square.
They both fell silent before widening their eyes when they recognized that smell.
It was Kendra, the rookie.
Emma was extremely nervous when Idris escorted her to Sultan Noah's chambers. She couldn't think properly, but the brown-haired man promised her that she would be all right and that she just had to follow her customs as she had been explained to him while she was perfumed.
The door opened and her belly contracted when she smelled that combination of cinnamon and vanilla, she closed her eyes when she entered, but thanks to her senses she was able to walk without seeing for at least a while.
—You don't have to follow those absurd laws —was the first thing he heard come from the voice of the blonde with blue eyes, he unconsciously opened his eyes and saw him sitting with his legs spread on the edge of the bed, his arms were crossed behind his neck and a huge smile, he looked strangely tense for being in such a relaxed position—. The doors have been closed, you are free now to look me in the eye and call me Noah. These are my rooms, by the way.
—Oh, thanks... I think —she didn't know what to say but her heartbeats wouldn't let her hear right—. I... um, I don't know what to say. Should I say it's an honor? I mean, it is. Ah, these are the sultan's chamber, I don't even know what I'm saying —she was all blushed—. I better shut up.
The blonde gave a soft laugh and stood up, approaching her. He thought he would have an arrhythmia if he kept getting close to her, but the older one stopped a few steps from her, while he looked into her eyes.
—You have really cute eyes —he said—, I didn't notice that before.
—Th- Thanks —she babbled.
The blonde smiled.
—Do you wanna sit with me? —he asked her as he pointed to his bed. Emma narrowed her eyes, her pheromones showed that she didn't like where the things were going.
In part, the Greek god in front of her attracted her as someone had never attracted him and she was flattered to be there in his chambers all alone, but on the other hand, she didn't want to be just one more of the harem to him. No, she wanted to be special.
—I'm not going to force you to do anything —he said quickly, noticing her discomfort.
My, he was so gentleman. Noah understood that she believed that he called her for that, and it was true at the very beginning he thought that since he needed to get rid of his emotions, but it wasn't fair to take advantage of the omega and she could be considered as a novice between them. She looked incredulous.
—You don't seem comfortable, it looks like you're not sure to do something, um, I don't know how to explain this —he was talking fast—. Look, the rules say that I can't lay down with a novice, and just the omegas to belong to my harem can enter my chambers unless you're in heat. That you're not, and maybe you could misunderstand my intentions... I don't... You know —he cleared his throat.
—Oh.
—I like you —he continued, slower—, I found you interesting and I want to know you. Plus you're really hot but I'm not gonna force you. Never... I just called you to talk. Is talk okay, right?
—Oh, yeah, of course —she was confused, but he was smiling at her and handing her hand to guide her to a coach, they seated—. Then... Your majesty?
He smiled.
—You can call me Noah in here. Tell me about your life, Emma —he said.
—My life? —another weird question, she wrinkled her nose—. Why are you so interested in my life? I already told you there's nothing special in my life. There's nothing special about me, at all.
—Don't say that. What about if I start then? My name is Noah Tusan, I have twenty-six years and I was born in October —he raised his shoulders.
That made her smile. She decided to imitate him and sit like he was doing, one leg out of the couch and the other with the knee next to his face.
—Collins —she said—, Emma Collins, that's my name. I have twenty years and I don't even know in what month I was born.
—How's that possible?
—My mother gave birth to me in a herd from the south —it was the first time she said that out loud. Before disappearing her mother told her everything about her birthday in a fight they had, she closed her eyes to calm her heart—. I don't know what time was that. She was a hostage in the pack at that time, one of the captors fell in love with her and she ran out when the first chance came up —she sighed—, they used 13th of April as my birthday.
—Wow. And then what happened? —Noah was looking at her with a melancholic smile.
—They got married, the man... promised my mother, eternal love —she affirmed.
—So everything it's good then —he noticed she wasn't well—. Do you miss your mother?
—I don't remember her that much when I was little. I don't remember anything until the day I got turned into this and my mother disappeared that day. I don't... I don't know anything at all.
—Calm down —he put his hand over her head—, what about your dad? I mean, your stepfather.
—Well, you already know him —she sniffed—. It's Farrell.
Just the mention of that man makes the blonde growled and his fangs go out.
—That... stupid was your stepfather? —she affirmed—. And still, he was haunting you that day?
—He's the alpha-
—Emma, I want you to answer something with all honesty. Can you? —she bows her head, he took a little breath—. Does that idiot... did he? —he couldn't even said it. She bowed again and he raised to calm down.
Anger was what he felt running through his veins at that moment. His memory could only think of his mother's ex-husband and his stupid father, Akira, who abused not only his mother but every female in his old pack. It took him a lot to face him, but when he was only ten years old, he challenged him and if he won, he would win the freedom of his mother Katia, and him. He beat her, the fact that he was alive proved it, and he was trying to calm down because his mother had met someone fantastic in that herd, which they came to long after walking and walking through the forest without any sense.
—Are you... Are you okay? —she was scared of the change of his pheromones. Scary.
He opened his eyes when remembered she was there and get close to her, cradling her face in his hands.
—Yeah, I'm sorry. I just...
Before he could excuse himself, the doors opened and although Noah had wanted to scold the insolence of the person behind him, Idris's frightened smell made him turn around in concern. Idris was his nurse when he was a rookie in the pack, like Kenneth to Soleil and Gale to Emma, so he knew well that he wouldn't break a rule unless it was strictly necessary. He looked at him.
—What's wrong?
—Someone... challenged the alpha —he said, not believing it yet.
—What? —Noah was pale.
Emma looked at them both confused. Did someone challenge the alpha? She thought that wasn't even possible.
—Where? —Noah growled.
—In the town square, you don't have too much time. We better go now, so are you —said, pointing at her.
—She?
—Me?
Idris bowed.
—Get your clothes off, your majesty, give her your clothes —Emma blinked—, I'll take her. There's no way we get to the town square in our human shapes.
—Ah?!
—There's no time! —he rushed while looking at Emma—. You're going to carry our clothes, that way we can get dressed up when we arrive and then intervene.
—Oh, I... I got it.
—Good.
Her blush grew bigger when she saw that the sultan took off his shirt, he seemed to do a lot of exercises because his muscles were perfect and they were tense. She looked away, embarrassed and more to notice that Idris also took off his shirt, she preferred to close her eyes when she heard the buckle on the blonde's belt. Unfortunately, the rest of her senses didn't turn off so easily.
—Well, that's all —the last garment was in her hands, and when she heard a growl opened her eyes. That big and beautiful white wolf with blue eyes in front of her was the first thing she saw. Next to him was the brown wolf laying—. Time to go.
—Okay, um... Here I go —she tried to ride him but fell—. No, wait. I can't hold me with your clothes in my hands.
—Go away, we'll catch you later —the brown wolf looked at the sultan. He started running.
—Here! —she found a bag and entered their clothes on it, then she wore it and look at the wolf—. Now we can go —she said, nervous. She never did something like that before. Ride a wolf, crazy.
But she had to do it anyway.
So he hurried and as expected, as soon as he left the palace like that, everyone in the training field turned to see him, with a howl he sent two of his trust with him, Gale and Nathan quickly joined him in their wolfish forms, behind them was Idris with Emma on his back.
They had to be on time, quickly.
The sultan's mind was blinded by bad thoughts, despair at losing her, and memories of the past.
No one had dared to challenge an Alpha in ten years, which was really surprising and terrifying at the same time, he did not want to know how it could end, so he must arrive on time and stop her from making the wrong decision.
He could lose her and he hated the idea.
