Chapter Five: The Night Everything Changed

1545 Words
Emma didn’t realize how fragile safety was… Until she lost it. The morning after the “accident” felt different. The mansion no longer felt luxurious. It felt exposed. Every window seemed like a threat. Every shadow felt alive. Emma stood in the kitchen, her hands wrapped around a mug she hadn’t taken a single sip from. “They were following me…” she whispered to herself. Adrian entered, already on the phone, his voice cold and lethal. “I want every security camera reviewed.” Pause. “I don’t care how much it costs.” Pause. “Find out who ordered it.” He ended the call and turned toward her. For the first time, she saw something she hadn’t before. Fear. Not for himself. For her. “You’re not leaving the house today,” he said firmly. She looked up slowly. “Excuse me?” “It’s not a suggestion.” “I’m not a prisoner.” “You’re a target.” The word landed hard. Her chest tightened. “So now I’m just collateral damage?” His jaw flexed. “You’re my wife.” “That’s not an answer.” He stepped closer. His voice dropped. “You matter.” Silence. The air shifted. She swallowed. “You keep saying that,” she whispered. “But you still won’t tell me everything.” His eyes darkened. “Because the more you know, the more dangerous it becomes.” “That’s not your choice to make.” For a moment, something vulnerable flickered in his gaze. Then it disappeared. The Protection She Didn’t Ask For By noon, two black SUVs were parked outside the mansion. Security. Men in suits. Earpieces. Armed. Emma stared at them through the window. “This is insane.” Adrian stood behind her. “It’s necessary.” She turned around sharply. “I didn’t sign up for bodyguards.” “You signed a marriage contract.” “And nowhere did it say ‘risk of death.’” He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “If something happens to you…” He stopped. The sentence unfinished. She looked at him carefully. “What?” His eyes met hers. “I won’t survive it.” The confession was quiet. Raw. Unfiltered. Her breath caught. For a second, she forgot the anger. Forgot the tension. All she saw was a man trying desperately not to lose control. “Then stop pushing me away,” she said softly. His hand almost lifted to touch her. Almost. But his phone buzzed again. And the moment shattered. A Message in Red Emma went upstairs to clear her head. She entered the bedroom. And froze. On the white bedsheet… Red. Her heart stopped. Two words written across the fabric in dripping paint: YOU’RE NEXT. Her hands began shaking. “Adrian!” she screamed. He rushed upstairs immediately. His expression changed the moment he saw it. Not shock. Not confusion. Rage. Pure, silent rage. “How did they get inside?” she whispered. Security rushed in seconds later. Adrian turned lethal. “Lock the gates. No one in or out.” Emma stepped back slowly. “They were in our bedroom,” she breathed. His voice dropped to something dangerous. “This isn’t intimidation anymore.” “Then what is it?” “It’s escalation.” Breaking Down Hours later, after police reports and security sweeps, Emma sat alone in the dark living room. She hadn’t cried. Not yet. But the fear was sitting heavy in her lungs. Adrian entered quietly. The house was silent now. Guards posted everywhere. He knelt in front of her. “You should rest.” She laughed weakly. “Sleep in the bed with that message?” His hand gently took hers. “Emma.” Her composure cracked. “I didn’t ask for this!” she burst out. “I didn’t ask to be part of your war!” He didn’t interrupt. “I was fine,” she whispered. “I had a simple life. A quiet life.” Tears welled up in her eyes. “And now I’m being hunted.” He moved closer. His voice softened. “I will burn this city down before I let anything happen to you.” She looked at him. “That’s what scares me.” His expression faltered. “You don’t understand,” she said. “You think you’re protecting me, but you’re dragging me deeper.” For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Then he did something unexpected. He pulled her into his arms. Not possessive. Not demanding. Protective. She stiffened at first. Then slowly… She melted into him. His chin rested lightly against her hair. “I never wanted you hurt,” he whispered. “Then why marry me?” Silence. His arms tightened . “Because I needed someone real.” Her heart pounded. “And now?” He pulled back slightly. “Now I need you safe.” The Threat Gets Personal That night, Emma couldn’t sleep. She sat up in bed. Adrian was beside her, awake too. “You don’t sleep much, do you?” she asked quietly. “I can’t afford to.” She studied his face in the dark. “You’re exhausted.” “So are you.” Silence lingered. Then— A phone vibrated on the nightstand. Not Adrian’s. Hers. Her breath caught. Unknown number. She hesitated. “Answer it,” Adrian said calmly. Her fingers trembled slightly as she lifted the phone. “Hello?” Silence. Then breathing. Slow. Deliberate. Her stomach twisted. “Who is this?” A distorted voice spoke. “You look beautiful in white.” Her blood ran cold. The bedsheets. The message. She couldn’t speak. Adrian took the phone instantly. “Say that again,” he said dangerously. The line went dead. Emma’s hands were ice cold. “He was watching me,” she whispered. Adrian stood. His entire body radiated fury. “This ends now.” The Secret She Wasn’t Ready For Later, in his office, Adrian poured two glasses of water. He handed one to her. She didn’t take it. “You said I’m safer not knowing,” she said quietly. He nodded. “I changed my mind.” Her heart pounded. “There’s a rival consortium,” he began. “They’ve wanted control of Blackwood Holdings for years.” “And?” “They can’t beat me legally.” “So they scare you.” “No.” He looked at her. “They scare the one thing that makes me vulnerable.” Her throat tightened. “Me.” “Yes.” She swallowed hard. “Victoria?” “She was engaged to me because of business alignment.” Emma’s chest tightened slightly. “But she walked away when she realized I wouldn’t give up control.” “Does she hate you?” “She hates losing.” Emma exhaled slowly. “So is she behind this?” His eyes darkened. “I don’t know.” And that scared her more than anything. The Almost Confession The tension between them had shifted. No longer just anger. Now it was shared danger. Shared vulnerability. Emma stepped closer to him. “You said you wouldn’t survive if something happened to me.” He didn’t deny it. “Why?” He hesitated. Then quietly— “Because I’m already losing control.” Her breath caught. “You don’t love easily, do you?” “No.” “And me?” His hand lifted slowly, brushing against her cheek. “You’re a complication I didn’t plan for.” “That’s not an answer.” His thumb gently traced her jaw. “And that terrifies me.” Their faces were inches apart. She felt it. The truth hovering. Then— A loud crash echoed from downstairs. Glass shattering. Gunshots. Emma gasped. Adrian pulled her behind him instantly. “Stay here.” “No!” “Emma—” But she grabbed his arm. “I’m not hiding.” Another gunshot. Security shouting. Adrian’s expression turned lethal. “Fine,” he said. “But you stay behind me.” They ran downstairs. The front windows were shattered. One guard was injured. Another shouting into a radio. “Black SUV fleeing!” Adrian’s jaw clenched. “They’re getting desperate.” Emma’s heart pounded violently. This wasn’t intimidation. This was war. Later, after the police left, after the house was sealed again— Emma stood alone in the hallway. Her phone buzzed. Another unknown number. She hesitated. Then opened the message. A photo. Her breath stopped. It was taken earlier that evening. Through a window. Of her. Standing beside Adrian. Captioned: “He can’t protect you forever.” Her fingers trembled. Then a second message came. “Ask him about the file labeled E.” Her heart slammed against her ribs. File E? She looked toward Adrian’s office. He was inside. On the phone. Unaware. Slowly… Emma turned. And walked toward his office door. Her hand hovered over the handle. What was File E? And why didn’t Adrian tell her about it? Her heart pounded. If she opened that door— Everything might change. And for the first time… Emma wasn’t sure if the real danger was outside the house. Or inside her marriage.
