Chapter 4: The First Move

1531 Words
Silent Night Night settled heavily over the house. A deep silence wrapped itself around the property like a thick blanket, suffocating every sound beneath it. It was not the peaceful silence of rest. Nor was it the comforting quiet that often follows a long day. This silence felt different. Unnatural. Oppressive. The kind of silence that made a person painfully aware of every breath they took. Outside, a cool wind drifted through the trees. Branches swayed gently. Leaves whispered against one another in the darkness. Occasionally, the distant bark of a stray dog echoed through the neighborhood before being swallowed once more by the endless night. Above, the moon hung pale and lonely in the sky. Its silver light slipped through partially opened curtains and stretched across the floor in long, ghostly patterns. Inside the house, every room was asleep. Every door remained closed. Every light was turned off. Every member of the family rested. Except one. Grandfather sat alone in the darkness. A single lamp stood upon the table before him. Its faint yellow glow illuminated only a small part of the room. The rest remained buried in shadow. The light flickered occasionally, as though even the lamp struggled beneath the weight of the silence. And directly in front of him sat a photograph. Carefully positioned. Almost reverently. As if it were something sacred. Maro. The frame was simple. Clean. Untouched. Preserved exactly as it had been since the funeral. Inside it, Maro smiled warmly. Confidently. Alive. It was a smile that no longer existed anywhere else in the world. Grandfather stared at it without blinking. Without moving. His gaze never left his son's face. As though looking away for even a second might cause the image to disappear forever. His hands rested upon his knees. Yet every now and then, his fingers twitched slightly. Tiny movements that betrayed the storm raging within him. Time passed. Minutes. Perhaps hours. He no longer knew. Nor did he care. Finally, his lips moved. "You said you had no enemies..." His voice was barely audible. A whisper. A thought spoken aloud by mistake. The room offered no answer. Only silence. His eyes darkened. The grief within them slowly transformed into something heavier. Something more dangerous. "Then who did this to you?" The question lingered in the room. Unanswered. For a brief moment, it felt as though even the darkness itself was listening. Namu Learns the Truth A faint sound interrupted the stillness. Footsteps. Soft. Careful. Namu appeared at the doorway. Partially concealed by the shadows of the corridor. Sleep had abandoned him hours ago. No matter how hard he tried, something felt wrong. An uneasy tension had followed him throughout the evening. It lingered in his thoughts. In his chest. In every silent moment. Eventually, it had led him here. He stood quietly, watching his father. The way he sat. The way he stared at Maro's photograph. The overwhelming sadness surrounding him. It was unlike anything Namu had ever witnessed. "Dad?" His voice was gentle. Cautious. No response. Namu stepped forward. "Dad... why aren't you sleeping?" Grandfather's shoulders stiffened. Slowly, he turned. The expression on his face immediately made Namu uneasy. Fear. Not fear of danger. Not fear of death. Fear of truth. Grandfather looked at the photograph one last time. Then back at his son. For several moments, he said nothing. As though fighting an internal battle. Then finally, he made a decision. A painful one. "Your brother..." His voice faltered. "...didn't die naturally." The words struck like lightning. Silence exploded between them. Namu froze. "What?" The question escaped him instantly. Grandfather reached beside him and picked up a file. A simple folder. Yet somehow it seemed heavier than stone. "The report." He extended it toward Namu. Namu hesitated. Then accepted it. The papers felt ordinary. Far too ordinary to contain something capable of destroying a family. Slowly, he opened the file. His eyes moved across the pages. Reading. Understanding. Processing. Then suddenly- His gaze stopped. His heartbeat accelerated. His breathing became uneven. His fingers tightened around the paper. The words blurred briefly before returning into focus. Clear. Terrifying. Unavoidable. "Poison?" The word escaped his lips in a whisper. A chill ran through his body. His hands began shaking. His mind raced. Someone had poisoned Maro. Someone had murdered him. Not an accident. Not illness. Not fate. Murder. The realization hit him with overwhelming force. Anger erupted inside him instantly. Hot. Violent. Uncontrollable. His eyes burned with fury. "I'll find whoever did this!" His voice shattered the silence. The file crumpled slightly in his grip. But before he could continue- "NO!" Grandfather's voice thundered through the room. Namu stopped immediately. The authority in his father's tone left no room for argument. Grandfather rose slowly to his feet. Pain filled his eyes. Raw. Unfiltered. "I already lost one son." His voice broke. "I will not lose another." The words carried the full weight of a grieving father. Silence followed. Yet it was no longer empty. It was filled with love. Fear. Anger. And heartbreak. Namu lowered his head. His breathing gradually slowed. The rage remained. But it changed. It hardened. Became focused. Controlled. After a long pause, he finally spoke. "Tomorrow..." His voice was calm now. Determined. "We'll go to the police." "They'll investigate." Grandfather studied him carefully. The pain. The resolve. The fire burning behind his eyes. Slowly, he nodded. "Okay." The Next Morning Morning arrived. But it brought no comfort. The sun rose. Birds sang. The city awakened. Life continued. Yet inside the house, darkness remained. The atmosphere felt heavier than ever. Every movement seemed deliberate. Every sound carried unusual weight. Namu sat quietly in the living room. His thoughts refused to rest. Maro. Poisoned. Murdered. The questions circled endlessly. Who had done this? Why? What secret had Maro discovered? And why had he prepared a will before his death? None of it made sense. Yet somehow, everything felt connected. Then suddenly- The telephone rang. The sharp sound cut through the room. Namu immediately picked it up. "Hello?" A brief pause followed. Then a voice spoke. Professional. Urgent. "Sir, our company has been taken over by the government." Namu blinked. For a moment, he thought he had misheard. "What?" "You need to come immediately." His grip tightened around the receiver. "What happened?" "There are serious issues regarding unpaid GST." Namu's eyes widened. Impossible. "I'll be there within an hour." He slowly lowered the phone. His thoughts went blank. Then panic began replacing confusion. Sudden Loss The journey felt endless. Traffic moved around him. People filled the streets. Yet he barely noticed any of it. His mind remained trapped inside a storm of questions. By the time he returned home that evening, he looked exhausted. Defeated. His shoulders sagged. His eyes appeared hollow. The moment Grandfather saw him, he knew something was wrong. "What happened?" Namu lowered himself onto a chair. Slowly. As though all his strength had disappeared. "Dad..." His voice cracked. "I lost the company." The room instantly fell silent. Grandfather stared at him. "What do you mean?" Namu clenched his fists. "The government seized control." "They claim the company failed to pay GST." Grandfather frowned. "But is that true?" "No." The answer came immediately. Firmly. "I checked every document." "Everything is correct." His frustration became visible. His jaw tightened. "I have proof." "Then why would they do this?" Grandfather asked. Namu shook his head. "I don't know." And that frightened him more than anything. A Dangerous Connection Silence settled over the room. Not the silence of grief. The silence of realization. Grandfather leaned back slowly. His expression darkened. "This isn't normal." Namu looked up. Their eyes met. And suddenly, the same thought crossed both their minds. The same terrifying possibility. Neither spoke immediately. Because saying it aloud would make it real. Finally, Namu broke the silence. "Do you think..." He hesitated. "Do you think this is connected to Maro?" The room became still. Neither answered. Yet neither denied it. And that silence spoke louder than words. The Police Investigation A few moments later, Namu asked quietly, "Dad... did you visit the police station today?" Grandfather nodded. "Yes." "I submitted the postmortem report." "And?" Grandfather exhaled slowly. "They said they would begin an investigation." "When?" A pause. "Soon." The word felt weak. Empty. Neither man found comfort in it. The First Move That night, darkness returned once again. Silent. Heavy. Watching. Namu stood beside the window in his room. The city lights flickered in the distance. His reflection stared back at him through the glass. Tired. Angry. Determined. "Brother..." His voice was barely above a whisper. The darkness offered no reply. "First they took you." His hands slowly clenched into fists. "And now they've taken my company." His eyes narrowed. A realization settled deep inside him. Cold. Sharp. Certain. "This isn't a coincidence." The words hung in the darkness. A statement. Not a question. Somewhere out there, someone was moving against his family. Someone powerful. Someone dangerous. Someone who wanted everything Maro had left behind. And this... Namu realized... Was only the beginning. Final Line As the family searched for Maro's killer, the killer had already made the first move.
