Chapter 1: The Man No One Truly Knew

1852 Words
Rain poured endlessly from the heavens, as though the sky itself had finally surrendered to a grief too great to bear. Dark clouds stretched across the horizon, swallowing every trace of light. They hung low over the earth like a heavy curtain, suffocating the world beneath their weight. The air was thick and oppressive, and every breath felt heavier than the last. The narrow road had become a river of mud and rainwater. Countless droplets struck the ground in an endless rhythm, creating ripples that formed and disappeared within moments-fragile and fleeting, much like human lives. From the distant trees came the uneasy cries of birds. Their sharp calls echoed through the storm as though they sensed something was wrong. Something unnatural. Thunder rumbled overhead. At first, it sounded distant and harmless. Then it grew louder. Closer. Until each roar shook the earth itself. And there, at the center of the storm- A lifeless body lay motionless upon the ground. A white funeral cloth covered him from chest to feet, though the relentless rain had already soaked the fabric. Water streamed across the cloth and pooled beneath him, yet he remained perfectly still. As though he had become one with the silence. Around him stood a crowd that continued to grow with every passing minute. People arrived from every direction. Some stood silently with lowered heads. Others wiped tears from their eyes. Many simply stared. The rain concealed their expressions, but not their sorrow. Eventually, the silence broke. "Why didn't Maro ever get married?" an elderly woman whispered, her voice trembling with sadness. Another woman slowly shook her head. "He never showed interest in any girl." "Dying at thirty..." a man murmured. "That's far too young." "What a tragic fate." Their voices drifted through the rain. Questions. Regrets. Speculations. Everyone knew Maro. At least, they believed they did. He was respected. Kind. Helpful. The sort of person who always appeared when someone needed assistance. Yet despite all the years they had known him, there was one undeniable truth. No one truly understood who Maro was. No one knew the life he carried behind his quiet smile. And now, with his death, it seemed those secrets would be buried forever. Or so everyone thought. The Sudden Arrival Time seemed to slow beneath the storm. Minutes stretched endlessly. The mourners stood in silence, listening to the rain and thunder. Then suddenly- A car appeared. Its headlights pierced through the gray curtain of rain as it sped down the road. The tires sliced through puddles, sending water spraying in every direction. Moments later, it came to an abrupt stop beside the gathering crowd. The engine continued humming softly. Before anyone could react, the doors flew open. Three people rushed out. They didn't pause. They didn't look around. Without hesitation, they ran straight toward the body. The first was Maro's younger brother, Namu. The moment he reached his brother's side, his legs gave way beneath him. He collapsed into the mud. His trembling hands reached toward Maro's cold face. For several seconds, he simply stared. As if refusing to believe what lay before him. Then his composure shattered. "Brother!" His anguished cry pierced through the storm. "Brother, why did you leave without me?" The pain in his voice silenced everyone. Rain fell around him as tears streamed freely down his face. Beside him, his wife dropped to her knees. She covered her mouth with both hands, desperately trying to suppress her sobs. But she couldn't. The grief was overwhelming. Nearby, their young daughter stood trembling. Her small shoulders shook as tears rolled down her cheeks. She clung helplessly to her mother. Watching. Crying. Unable to understand why the adults around her were suffering so much. The sorrow spread through the crowd like a wave. Conversations stopped. Whispers faded. Only the sound of rain remained. Then something unexpected happened. The Mysterious Voice A sound emerged from inside the car. At first, it was barely audible. A faint cry. Then it grew louder. Clearer. A child's voice. Crying. Not ordinary crying. Someone calling out. The sound cut through everything. The rain. The thunder. The mourning. Every head turned toward the vehicle. Confused murmurs spread through the crowd. "Who is that?" "There's another child inside?" "Whose child is it?" People exchanged puzzled looks. No one had seen a child arrive. No one knew what was happening. Yet the crying continued. Soft. Fragile. Heartbreaking. And somehow... Personal. As though the child had lost someone precious. The Revelation The car door slowly opened. This time, no one moved. Everyone watched. A small girl stepped out. She looked no older than six years old. Her dark hair clung to her forehead from the damp air. Her cheeks were wet with tears. But it was her eyes that captured everyone's attention. They held a sadness far beyond her years. For a brief moment, she stood frozen. Then she saw the body. And she ran. Her tiny feet splashed through puddles as she raced toward the gathering. Her breathing was uneven. Her face twisted with despair. Then she cried out. "Dad!" The single word struck the crowd harder than thunder. Everything froze. Time itself seemed to stop. The little girl reached Maro's body and immediately threw herself beside him. Wrapping both arms around him, she held him tightly. As though refusing to let anyone take him away. "Dad..." Her voice broke. "Dad, please wake up..." "Please..." The innocence of her plea shattered every heart present. Many mourners began crying again. Others simply stared in disbelief. Shock spread across every face. Even Maro's parents stood motionless. Unable to process what they had just heard. Finally, Maro's father stepped forward. His expression was filled with confusion. His voice was uncertain. Yet firm. "Who are you?" he asked gently. The girl did not answer. She only cried harder. The old man's brows tightened. "Why are you calling him your father?" His voice trembled. "He isn't your father..." The Truth Begins to Surface Before anyone could speak, another voice broke the silence. "Dad!" It was Namu. His face was covered in tears. Yet determination burned in his eyes. He looked directly at his father. Then spoke the words that changed everything. "Dad... she is your granddaughter." The old man's eyes widened. His body stiffened. "What?" The word escaped his lips as little more than a whisper. Then disbelief overtook him. "Maro got married?" "How is that possible?" The crowd erupted immediately. "What?" "Maro had a daughter?" "Was he secretly married?" "Did he hide a family?" "Did he have an affair?" Questions flew in every direction. The whispers became louder. Sharper. More intrusive. Namu clenched his fists. His face darkened. Finally, he couldn't endure it any longer. The Hidden Truth "Dad..." His voice shook. "Please don't say things like that." The old man turned toward him. Confusion and grief battled across his face. "Maro is gone!" he shouted. "Everyone deserves an explanation!" His voice cracked. "Even I don't understand any of this." "You made a promise?" "Forget the promise." "Tell us the truth." The rain continued falling. Yet strangely, it seemed quieter now. As though even the storm was waiting for an answer. Namu closed his eyes. Taking a deep breath. His hands trembled. Tears rolled down his cheeks. Finally, he spoke. "You're right." His gaze shifted toward the little girl still clinging to Maro's body. Then back to his father. "That child..." He paused. His voice breaking. "...was adopted by Maro from a children's home." Silence. Complete silence. Even the rain seemed to fade away. Namu swallowed hard. Then continued. "He named her Esima." A Father's Legacy The old man's expression slowly changed. The confusion disappeared. Then the shock. And finally... Something else. Pride. His eyes filled with tears once more. But these tears were different. They were not born from sorrow alone. They were born from admiration. "My son..." His voice trembled. "My son adopted a child." He turned toward the crowd. There was no shame in his eyes. No hesitation. Only pride. The pride of a father who had just discovered one final act of kindness from his son. Then he looked at the little girl. His voice softened instantly. "My dear granddaughter." "Come here, Esima." The little girl slowly lifted her head. For a moment, she hesitated. Then she stood. Step by step, she walked toward him. The old man knelt and opened his arms. Without warning, Esima ran into them. He embraced her tightly. As though she were the last remaining piece of Maro in this world. Tears streamed down his weathered face. Nearby, Namu's daughter, Lana, rushed forward and wrapped her arms around Esima. The two girls held each other tightly. Bound not by blood. But by something far stronger. Love. Acceptance. Family. And beneath the fading storm, the shattered pieces of a broken family slowly began to come together. The Next Morning The rain was gone. The storm had passed. Above them, the sky stretched clear and blue. Sunlight bathed the earth in a gentle warmth, as though nature itself wished to offer comfort after a night of sorrow. Esima stood beside Maro's body. The funeral preparations had been completed. Flowers surrounded him. Incense drifted softly through the air. People continued arriving from every direction. Yet Esima noticed none of it. Her eyes remained fixed on Maro. "Dad..." Her small voice barely rose above a whisper. "Come play with me." The innocent request pierced every heart nearby. She looked toward her grandfather. Confusion filled her eyes. "Grandpa..." "Why isn't Dad waking up?" The question shattered what little strength remained among the mourners. Many lowered their heads. Others turned away. Unable to watch. The old man knelt beside her. His eyes glistened with tears. Carefully, he placed a hand upon her shoulder. "Your father has gone to God." His voice trembled. He paused, struggling against his grief. Then forced a gentle smile. "He'll come back someday." The little girl nodded slowly. Not because she understood. But because she trusted him. Final Farewell The sun shone brightly over the funeral procession. Birds sang once again. Their songs softer now. Peaceful. As if they too had accepted what had happened. High above, an eagle soared across the endless sky. Its wings carried it higher and higher until it became a distant silhouette against the clouds. Maro's final journey had begun. Drums echoed through the streets in a slow, solemn rhythm. People gathered from every corner of the city. Not dozens. Not hundreds. Thousands. More than a thousand friends, colleagues, and acquaintances came to pay their respects. Each carried a memory. A story. A moment they had shared with him. And as they stood together, many realized something they had never understood before. They had known Maro for years. Yet they had never truly known the man himself. Because hidden beneath his quiet life was a heart far greater than anyone imagined. A life filled with sacrifices no one saw. A love no one knew existed. Until now. Final Line The man everyone believed had never loved anyone... Left behind the purest proof of love imaginable.
