The next morning came too quickly, but the silence remained.
Kieran stared at the screen, the flashing words in front of him like a riddle he couldn’t solve. Echo.
It was him. But not him. A voice in his head. A presence that had always been there, lurking behind his thoughts, only now… it was awake.
He didn’t know what he expected from this system, but it sure wasn’t that.
His phone buzzed, pulling him from his thoughts. A message from his best friend, Gabriel. Gabriel was the only person who knew some of Kieran’s past, though it wasn’t the kind of thing you shared on casual Tuesdays. He was waiting for Kieran to meet him for coffee, though Kieran had no intention of going.
Not today.
> “Hey, man. Are you coming today? I know you're not a fan of this, but… it’s been a while.”
Kieran read the message, the words meaningless in the face of his new reality. He had something else to focus on now. Something far more pressing.
The screen blinked again, another message from the Echo. It was there, as if it had never left, waiting for him to acknowledge it.
> "You’ve learned to ignore yourself for years. Now, you have to learn to listen.”
Kieran swallowed. His pulse quickened, but not from fear. From… something else. Something new. That same cold smile tugged at his lips. He didn’t feel safe with this new presence, but he also didn’t feel alone anymore.
Maybe that's the point, he thought, fingers itching to touch the screen. Maybe that’s the point of it all.
He stood, moving toward the window. The sun was muted behind a thick layer of clouds. He hated the sunlight anyway. It made things too bright. Too obvious.
---
The echo spoke again, its voice more insistent now, a soft, mocking whisper in the back of his mind.
> “What’s it going to be, Kieran? Are you going to leave your life in pieces, or are you going to do something about it? It’s all up to you. But only if you act. Only if you finally stop being afraid of what you could become.”
Kieran looked at the city below. He hated it. The chaos, the noise. Everything around him buzzed with untapped potential, just waiting to be ignored, waiting to be squashed underfoot by the masses who were too content to never push against the walls they’d built around themselves.
He wasn’t like that. He never had been.
But he had been quiet. He had been passive.
And right now, that feels like a sin.
---
A slight shiver ran up his spine. Was this what the system meant?
Kieran’s fingers tightened around the desk, his knuckles white. Act. The word tasted sour in his mouth.
But the Echo didn’t let up. It wasn’t a request.
> “You think too much. You’ve been living in the cage of your mind for so long. Don’t you want to break out? Don’t you want to feel something that isn’t silence?”
His heart skipped, an unfamiliar heat pooling in his chest.
He did want something different.
He did want out of the cage.
And that’s when it hit him.
---
His phone buzzed again. This time, it was a notification from the Echo system, an intrusive prompt.
> Confidence Level: 1%
Skill Unlocked: Veiled Step
Your first step toward breaking free. Use it when your voice feels lost. Step beyond the wall you’ve built around your world.
Kieran blinked. The screen flashed a new, strange text:
Veiled Step: Lv. 1
Effect: Become unseen in the eyes of others. You can move unnoticed and pass through spaces where no one expects you to be. Silent. Untraceable.
He frowned. This was it?
But as he read the instructions again, something clicked. He wasn’t meant to use it on others, not at first. He was meant to use it on himself. To fade away, to step into his own silence, to disappear into the background for a moment and feel what it was like to have control over his own movement.
---
Kieran’s pulse quickened. What if this was it? What if this was the way forward?
The surrounding room began to blur. At first, nothing happened. But then he could feel the change—a rush of cold air moving around him as if the space itself had shifted.
He closed his eyes. Took a deep breath.
Then, he stepped forward.
And when he opened his eyes, the world shifted. The edges of his surroundings darkened as if his presence was suddenly… not there.
He moved again, this time walking through the room, past his reflection in the window, but seeing no sign of himself.
Kieran felt like he was untouchable.
Like he wasn’t real.
---
For a few moments, he marveled at the feeling. It was both alien and familiar. The power of being unseen. Of existing outside the rules of perception.
It was a rush, but a strange one.
The Echo wasn’t lying.
> “You’re not as powerless as you think. You never were.”
And just like that, the voice faded, leaving him in silence. He didn’t need the Echo to speak anymore. He felt the weight of its words etched into his chest, pushing him forward.
---
With a single motion, Kieran turned to the door and stepped outside.
The world hasn’t changed.
But Kieran had.
