CHAPTER 10: "ASSULT ON SECTOR 3"

1059 Words
The firefight raged around Alex as Mia’s ominous words echoed in his mind. He crouched behind a barrier, his thoughts spinning as bullets whizzed overhead. Whatever The Vortex was after, it was critical, and they had to stop them before they reached it. “Sarah!” Alex called over the comm, taking a breath between shots. “We’ve got a bigger problem. They’re after something specific inside the base.” Sarah’s voice came through, tense but focused. “Any idea what it is?” “Not yet,” Alex replied. “But they’re pushing hard. Mia’s working on narrowing it down. Hold the line until we know more.” Sarah’s response was cut short by the sound of another explosion, closer this time. The northern defenses were holding, but just barely. Alex glanced at the horizon again, spotting the ominous transport moving closer. It loomed like a dark cloud, its purpose shrouded in mystery but undeniably threatening. Mia’s voice broke through the static. “Alex, I’ve got something. They’re heading for Sector 3 of the base—the classified vault. It’s heavily guarded, but if they’re making this kind of push, they know what they’re doing.” The classified vault. Alex’s stomach dropped. “What’s in Sector 3?” There was a brief pause, and Mia’s voice was quieter when she answered. “Experimental tech. Weapons that aren’t ready for deployment. If The Vortex gets their hands on it…” “They’ll have everything they need to tip the scales,” Alex finished, his heart racing. “We can’t let that happen. Mia, get me direct access to the vault’s security systems. I need to know if they’ve breached it.” “I’m on it,” Mia replied, her fingers working frantically. “But the signal’s still jammed in certain areas. I’ll do my best.” Alex turned to the soldiers around him, his voice firm. “We need to fall back and protect the vault. If they get inside, this fight is over.” “But the northern perimeter—” one of the soldiers began, uncertainty flickering across his face. “Forget the perimeter,” Alex snapped. “They’ve already breached the base. If they reach Sector 3, it won’t matter how many of us are still standing out here. We hold the vault.” Sarah, having overheard through the comms, chimed in. “Alex is right. Pull back, but stay coordinated. We can’t leave any gaps for them to slip through.” Reluctantly, the soldiers began to fall back, maintaining a defensive formation as they retreated toward the center of the base. The Vortex forces pressed harder, sensing the shift, but Alex and his team held their ground, firing back with precision. As they neared Sector 3, the sounds of battle grew louder, more chaotic. The Vortex operatives had already begun their assault on the vault, and the base’s defenders were struggling to hold them off. Explosions shook the ground, and smoke billowed through the air, obscuring visibility. Mia’s voice came through again, strained but clear. “Alex, I’ve got partial access to the vault’s security feed. They’re close to breaking through the outer door. You need to get there now.” “We’re on our way,” Alex replied, his heart pounding in his chest. As they rounded a corner, the vault came into view. It was a massive structure, reinforced with layers of steel and security measures that had once seemed impenetrable. Now, those defenses were crumbling under the relentless assault of The Vortex’s forces. Alex’s team joined the base’s defenders, laying down suppressive fire as they tried to push the attackers back. The battle was fierce, but they were outnumbered, and The Vortex was determined. “We can’t hold them much longer!” one of the base’s soldiers shouted, reloading his weapon as another wave of Vortex operatives pushed forward. Alex glanced at the outer door of the vault. It was dented and scorched, but still holding—for now. “Mia, any chance you can reinforce the vault’s security remotely?” “I’m trying,” Mia’s voice came through, strained with frustration. “But they’ve hacked into the system. I’m working on locking them out, but it’s not looking good.” “Do what you can,” Alex said grimly. “We’ll hold the line.” He glanced at Sarah, who was reloading her rifle beside him. “We need to buy Mia time. If they breach the vault, it’s over.” Sarah nodded, her expression hard. “We hold them here, or we don’t hold them at all.” The next wave of attackers came in harder than before, but Alex and his team fought back with everything they had. The sound of gunfire and explosions was deafening, the smoke thick and choking. For a moment, it felt like the battle would never end, like they were fighting a losing war. Then, from the vault’s outer door, there was a loud, metallic groan. The door was giving way. “They’re breaking through!” Marcus shouted, his voice barely audible over the chaos. Alex’s heart sank. They were out of time. Just as the door began to buckle, Mia’s voice crackled over the comm. “Alex, I’ve managed to reroute some power to the vault’s security systems. I’m going to trigger a lockdown. It won’t hold them forever, but it might buy you a few more minutes.” “Do it!” Alex shouted, firing off another round as The Vortex forces pushed closer. There was a brief pause, then a loud clank as the vault’s security systems engaged. The door, which had been on the verge of collapse, suddenly stopped moving, reinforced by the lockdown protocols Mia had managed to trigger. “It’s holding,” Mia said, relief evident in her voice. “But it won’t last long. You need to finish this, Alex.” Alex nodded, determination hardening his resolve. “We will.” He turned to his team, their faces streaked with sweat and dirt, their eyes burning with the same determination. “This ends now,” Alex said, his voice low but fierce. “We push them back, and we stop whatever they’re after.” With a final, unified surge, Alex and his team charged into the fray, determined to end The Vortex’s assault once and for all.
