CHAPTER 11:THE TICKING HOURGLASS

Alex sprinted ahead, leading his team through the thick haze of smoke and debris. They weaved through the wreckage of the base, their every step haunted by the distant roar of gunfire and the shouts of desperate soldiers. The lockdown on the vault had bought them time, but the countdown had already begun. “Mia, status update on the attackers inside the base,” Alex barked into his comms as he ducked behind a fallen steel beam, motioning for Sarah and Marcus to follow suit. Mia’s voice crackled through. “They’ve regrouped. Looks like they’re focusing all their efforts on getting to the vault now. I’d estimate you have about ten minutes before they make another push. You’ll have to hold them off until reinforcements arrive.” “Reinforcements?” Marcus scoffed, gripping his rifle. “At this rate, we’ll be lucky if they show up before the Vortex cracks the vault open.” “Then we make sure they don’t,” Alex said, scanning the horizon. “Our job is to hold, no matter what.” Sarah peered over the beam, her eyes narrowed as she scoped the area ahead. “Movement—three, maybe four squads coming from the southeast.” Alex’s jaw clenched. They were running out of time and options. The perimeter was collapsing, and if the Vortex forces concentrated their efforts on the vault, his team would be overwhelmed. He thought quickly. “We need to split them up. Make them think we’re everywhere at once.” Marcus raised an eyebrow. “You want to bait them?” Alex nodded. “We’ll plant explosives along their approach. Force them to change direction, slow them down. Mia, how much control do you have over the base’s internal systems?” “I’ve regained partial control,” Mia responded, her voice hurried. “If you need something specific, I can try to help.” “Good,” Alex said, glancing at his team. “Mia, set off a few controlled blasts near the eastern section. Make it look like we’re reinforcing that side.” “On it,” Mia replied, her fingers tapping away at her console. “Sarah, Marcus, set the charges along the main path to the vault. We’ll hit them as soon as they’re in range.” Without hesitation, Sarah and Marcus moved swiftly, planting explosives along the narrow corridors that led to the vault’s entrance. The sound of approaching footsteps grew louder as Vortex forces advanced. “They’re closing in,” Sarah whispered, her fingers hovering over the detonator. Alex watched, every muscle in his body tensing as the Vortex squads moved closer. The plan was risky, but they needed to disrupt the enemy’s momentum. They couldn’t afford a full-on confrontation here. “Now!” Alex ordered. The charges exploded in a brilliant flash, sending debris and smoke spiraling into the air. Vortex soldiers were thrown off balance, some tossed back by the force of the blast, others scattering to avoid the destruction. The chaos broke their formation, forcing them to regroup and approach more cautiously. Alex didn’t waste a second. “Sarah, Marcus—fall back to the next position. We keep them chasing shadows.” As they retreated, Mia’s voice cut through the comms, urgency lacing her words. “Alex, we’ve got a problem. I’m seeing movement inside the vault. I think one of The Vortex squads managed to infiltrate through a maintenance tunnel. They’re inside.” Alex’s heart dropped. “Damn it! How many?” “I’m not sure,” Mia said quickly, “but it’s at least a small squad. They’re moving toward the core lab.” Alex’s mind raced. The core lab held the most sensitive tech in the base, including the experimental weapons. If The Vortex reached it, all the chaos outside would be for nothing. “We have to stop them,” Alex said, turning to Sarah and Marcus. “Forget the outside forces. We need to secure the vault now.” Sarah nodded, her eyes sharp with determination. “What’s the plan?” “We go in through the main entrance, force them out. No more playing defense,” Alex said, his voice grim. “If they get to the tech, we’re finished.” With that, Alex led his team back toward the vault, moving quickly through the battered corridors. The sound of distant gunfire echoed in the background, but their focus was now entirely on stopping the infiltrators inside. As they reached the vault’s entrance, Alex could hear the faint hum of machinery and the eerie silence that followed. The Vortex squad had already entered the inner chamber. Alex raised his weapon, signaling for his team to flank the entrance. “On my mark, we breach.” They moved into position, ready to strike. “Three… two… one—breach!” Alex kicked open the door, and his team stormed in, weapons raised. Inside, the Vortex operatives were huddled near the core lab, working frantically to access the experimental tech. The room was filled with flickering screens and the low hum of the machines that powered the vault’s systems. “Drop your weapons!” Alex shouted. The Vortex soldiers whirled around, but before they could react, Sarah and Marcus opened fire, taking down two operatives. The others scrambled for cover, returning fire as chaos erupted in the confined space. Alex dove behind a console, bullets ricocheting off the steel walls. He fired back, hitting one of the operatives in the chest. “They’re pinned down. Push forward!” Sarah and Marcus advanced, their shots precise as they closed in on the remaining Vortex soldiers. The firefight was brutal, but Alex’s team moved with precision and coordination, pushing the enemy back toward the far wall. “We’ve got them!” Marcus shouted as the last Vortex operative dropped to the ground, his weapon falling from his grasp. Alex lowered his weapon, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The vault was secure—for now. But the realization hit him hard: they had only just begun to understand what The Vortex was after, and this battle was far from over. “Mia,” Alex said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through him. “We’ve cleared the vault. But I need to know what else we’re dealing with. What exactly did they want from here?” There was a long pause on the other end of the comm, before Mia finally responded. Her voice was grave. “Alex… they weren’t just after the weapons. They were after something else. A prototype. One that can change everything.” Alex’s blood ran cold. “What kind of prototype?” Mia’s answer was barely a whisper. “A weapon that can control time.”
