CHAPTER 7:"ECHOES OF VICTORY"

316 Words
The transport hummed as it soared through the night sky, the city lights below fading as they flew farther from the chaos. Inside, the atmosphere was tense but calm, the adrenaline from the mission slowly subsiding. Alex leaned back against the wall of the transport, his thoughts racing. "We bought the world some time, but The Vortex won’t stop. They’ll regroup. We need to be ready." Sarah, still alert but showing signs of exhaustion, nodded. "They’ll want revenge. Taking down their fusion device wasn’t just a blow to their plan—it was personal. They’ll come for us." Marcus, sitting across from her, wiped his brow and took a deep breath. "Let them come. They’ve already shown their hand. Next time, we’ll be more prepared." Mia was busy with her tablet, monitoring their exit path and scanning for any tracking signals. She frowned. "I’m still picking up residual chatter. They’re scrambling to figure out what happened, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to follow us." One of the extraction operatives glanced back from the cockpit. "ETA to base is twenty minutes. We’re not being followed for now, but stay sharp." Alex nodded, his mind already turning to the debriefing that awaited them. They’d stopped a catastrophe, but at what cost? The facility was left in ruins, and the aftermath could still spiral out of control if The Vortex had backup plans. "Mia, send a secure update to command. Let them know the device is neutralized, but we need surveillance on Vortex movements immediately." Mia tapped a few keys, her expression serious. "Already done. Command is requesting a full report when we land. They’ll want to know every detail." As they flew closer to base, the weight of the mission and the decisions they’d made began to sink in. They’d won this battle, but Alex knew this was only the beginning of a larger war.
