The command center was already a frenzy of activity when Alex and his team burst in. Technicians were glued to their monitors, soldiers rushed to arm themselves, and orders were shouted from every direction. The air was thick with urgency and tension.
“Status update!” Commander Reynolds barked as soon as they entered.
One of the technicians swiveled in her chair, her face pale. “Multiple unidentified aircraft approaching from the north and west. Ground forces are already in position just outside the perimeter, but we’ve detected more signatures coming in fast.”
Alex scanned the screens, the layout of the base flashing before him. The Vortex had timed their attack perfectly, hitting them when they were most vulnerable. He turned to Sarah. “We need to reinforce the northern defenses. That’s where their ground units will hit hardest.”
Sarah nodded, already gearing up. “I’ll take a squad and head there now. If we can push them back early, we might buy time to strengthen our perimeter.”
“Mia, get me real-time satellite imagery of their movements,” Alex ordered. “We can’t fight blind.”
Mia’s fingers flew over her tablet, her eyes flicking between the screens. “Working on it. Their signal jamming is strong, but I’m breaking through.”
Marcus was already heading for the armory. “I’ll secure the eastern approach. They won’t get far if I can lock down that side.”
Reynolds watched them with a critical eye, his jaw tight. “You’ve all been through hell today. Don’t underestimate The Vortex now. They’re desperate and dangerous.”
Alex met Reynolds’ gaze. “We know, Commander. But this isn’t just about survival. We have to make sure they don’t get what they came for.”
“Agreed,” Reynolds said, his voice grim. “They didn’t follow you here by accident. They want something, and we need to figure out what before it’s too late.”
Suddenly, an explosion rocked the base, shaking the command center. Alarms blared again, and red warning lights flashed across the screens.
“They’ve breached the southern wall!” a soldier shouted from the communication desk. “They’re inside the perimeter!”
Alex swore under his breath. “We need to split up. Marcus, take a team and shore up the southern defense. Mia, get those satellite images to us as soon as possible.”
Sarah, already armed, gripped her rifle. “Let’s go. We don’t have time to waste.”
As they moved to their respective positions, Alex’s mind raced. The Vortex was pushing harder than expected, and the breach meant they had a foothold. His team was strong, but they were running on fumes. They needed to stop The Vortex from advancing any further—or risk losing everything they had fought for.
Outside, the base was already under siege. Fire and smoke filled the air as Vortex operatives swarmed through the breach in the southern wall, clashing with the base’s defenders. Explosions lit up the night, and the staccato of gunfire echoed across the battlefield.
Alex joined the northern defenses just as Sarah and her squad engaged the first wave of attackers. They moved with precision, holding their ground despite being outnumbered. Alex fired off several rounds, dropping two operatives as they tried to flank the position.
“They’re coming in heavy!” Sarah shouted over the din. “We’re holding, but they’re bringing in more reinforcements!”
Alex gritted his teeth, his focus narrowing. They couldn’t afford to be overwhelmed. “We hold this line, no matter what. They can’t break through.”
As the battle raged on, Alex caught a glimpse of something on the horizon—an ominous shadow that made his blood run cold.
Mia’s voice crackled over his comm. “Alex, I’ve got visual confirmation from the satellites. They’ve brought something else—a transport, but it’s not just for reinforcements.”
“What are they transporting?” Alex asked, dread creeping into his voice.
“It’s… hard to say,” Mia hesitated. “But it looks like they’re after something specific inside the base. They’re not just here to destroy it—they’re here to take something.”
Alex’s heart pounded. “What the hell are they after?”
Mia’s voice was tight. “I don’t know. But whatever it is, they’re getting closer to it.”
