CHAPTER 5:THE FINAL STAND

383 Words
Alex and Sarah braced themselves as the door splintered, Vortex operatives pouring through the breach. The hall was a maelstrom of gunfire and shouts. Alex's strategy was simple: keep the enemy at bay and buy Marcus as much time as possible. Sarah, her focus unwavering, fired from her position behind a makeshift barricade of crates, each shot meticulously aimed. “Alex, they’re flanking us from both sides!” Alex nodded, recognizing the urgency. “Split them up! I’ll take the left. Cover me!” As Alex moved to intercept the flank, Sarah adjusted her fire to suppress the right side, pushing the operatives back. The facility's dim lighting cast long shadows, and every sound seemed amplified—footsteps, the crackle of gunfire, and the distant thrum of the fusion device’s countdown. Inside the chamber, Marcus’s hands moved with practiced speed. The device was a complex puzzle of wires and circuits, but he was close. His breath came in labored gasps as he bypassed the final failsafe. “I’m nearly done!” Marcus shouted, sweat mingling with the grime on his face. “Just a few more adjustments!” The door to the chamber suddenly groaned under the pressure of another explosion, and the metal twisted, threatening to cave in. Mia worked frantically to keep the new breach under control, her fingers flying over her tablet as she threw up temporary barricades. “They’re overwhelming us!” Mia yelled, her voice strained. Alex, struggling against the tide of enemies, saw the strain in Mia’s eyes and the sweat on Sarah’s brow. “We hold on just a bit longer!” he shouted, firing another burst as operatives closed in. In the chamber, Marcus’s hands trembled as he completed the final connection. A soft beep signaled the device was disarmed. “It’s done!” Marcus announced, relief flooding his voice. “Fall back!” Alex ordered, signaling to Sarah. “Get to the extraction point!” With the device neutralized, the team fought their way back to the facility’s exit, the battle behind them still raging but their path to safety clear. As they reached the extraction point, the facility’s alarms blared, signaling the end of their perilous mission. The fusion device was safe, for now, and the team, though battered, had achieved their objective.
