CHAPTER 2:INTO THE VORTEX

The team moved silently through the darkened corridors of the facility, their every step synchronized as if they had rehearsed it a hundred times. Alex led the way, his eyes scanning the surroundings for any sign of danger. The walls were lined with sleek, black panels, and the air was thick with the hum of concealed machinery. Mia followed close behind, her tablet in hand, continuously hacking into the facility’s system to ensure their path remained clear. Marcus and Sarah, bringing up the rear, stayed alert for any sign of ambush.“Next junction up ahead,” Mia whispered through their comms. “There’s a security checkpoint with two guards. We’ll have about fifteen seconds before they notice the cameras are down.”Alex nodded. “Sarah, you’re up.”Without a word, Sarah slipped ahead, her movements swift and calculated. She disappeared around the corner, and seconds later, two muffled thuds echoed through the hall. Sarah reappeared, signaling the all-clear.“Guards neutralized. Move fast.”The team rushed through the checkpoint, slipping past the motionless guards. Ahead of them loomed a heavily armored door, marked with biohazard symbols and high-voltage warnings. The fusion device was just beyond it.“Mia, what are we looking at?” Alex asked, eyeing the door.Mia's fingers flew over her tablet, pulling up the schematics. “It’s reinforced with multiple layers of protection—biometric scanners, electronic locks, and some kind of energy field I haven’t seen before. It’s going to take a minute to bypass it.”“Make it quick,” Marcus muttered, already prepping his toolkit in case they needed a more explosive approach.Mia knelt beside the door’s control panel, her focus intense as she began working on the biometric bypass. Alex kept watch, his eyes darting between the darkened hallway behind them and Mia’s progress. The seconds ticked by, each one feeling like an eternity.Suddenly, Mia froze. “We’ve got a problem.”“What kind of problem?” Alex asked, his voice calm but urgent.“The system’s running an automatic diagnostic. If it detects the tampering, it’ll lock down the entire facility.”“Can you stop it?” Sarah asked.“I’m trying, but it’s going to take time I don’t have.”Alex’s mind raced. “Marcus, can you take out the system without triggering an alarm?”Marcus nodded. “If I can get to the wiring behind the panel, I might be able to disable the diagnostics. But it’ll be tight.”“Do it. Sarah, cover us.”While Marcus and Mia worked side by side, Sarah positioned herself at the corner, her sharp eyes watching for any patrols. The facility was eerily silent, but they knew it wouldn’t last. The Vortex wouldn’t leave a weapon of mass destruction unguarded for long.As Marcus pried open the panel, a soft beeping sound echoed through the hall. It was faint but unmistakable—the sound of a security override.“They’re onto us,” Sarah warned. “We’ve got company.”Alex cursed under his breath. “How long do we have?”Mia’s voice was strained as she worked furiously. “Not long enough.”“Forget finesse,” Marcus said, pulling out a small explosive charge. “This’ll take care of the diagnostics.”“Are you crazy?” Mia hissed. “That could trigger a lockdown!”“We don’t have a choice,” Alex said. “Do it.”Marcus set the charge and took a step back. The explosion was small but effective, cutting through the system’s wiring and shutting down the diagnostics. The door’s locks disengaged with a loud clunk.“We’re in,” Marcus said, stepping back with a satisfied grin.“Not yet,” Alex muttered. “We’ve still got the
