CHAPTER 5 GETTING FOLLOWED

2141 Words
Jane stayed at the hospital for almost three days and was discharged by her OB earlier today. Stephen tried to make her stay for at least a week in the hospital since he’s afraid that something might happened to Jane the moment they arrived at their house. But Jane pushed the idea of going home so she could rest peacefully. I was with them, giving Stephen a moral support and backing him every time Jane trying to teach him a lesson by words or by hurting him physically in a form of punching him in the arm whenever he makes mistakes. And because they quarrel a lot, I became in charge taking care of Elise. That was the name of their baby girl. And guess what, I was the one who gave the baby a name. I shook my head while I continue to sway my body so Elise won’t wake up. “Will the two of you shut up?” Both of them turned to me with their sharp look. “What? Now, you’re mad at me? Come on, you guys should know how to compromise. You keep on acting like kids since yesterday. Why don’t you two try talking in a calm manner. You told me about being calm and yet you can’t do it on your own. Practice what you preach, guys. You’re not youngsters anymore. You already have a child and this child I am holding needs you. You’re fighting over small things. Stop that.” I walked towards Jane and carefully handled her Elise. Stephen walked a little closer so he could support the baby’s head. “Where are you going?” Stephen asked when he saw me getting my bag on the table. “Just somewhere,” I replied and waved my hand in the air. Jane sat properly on the sofa. “Are you coming back?” I nodded. “Yes, but maybe later in the evening. I have things to do as well. I’ll visit my father’s house and get my old things there. I’ll call when I’m coming to your house.” Stephen gave me a nod. “Just take care.” I smiled before leaving the room. The moment I stepped outside, I heaved a huge sigh and stretched my arms. I never thought it would went numb just because I carried Elise for almost thirty minutes. I craned my neck to the door where I exited a while ago before I started walking towards the huge exit door. I was in a serious driving mode when I received a call from Shonda. She told me that I must stopped by her office because she’s going to give me something. Seemed like it was important that’s why I went there. But I was honestly disappointed when I saw Marcos inside her office. Both of them are having a chitchat and they stopped from talking with each other the moment I entered. “Hey, Kate! I knew you would come by.” Shonda stood from her seat and rushed towards me. She gave me a kiss on my cheeks and hugged me in front of Marcos. My eyes were on him. I can’t help myself but to notice the clothes he’s wearing. As expected, his attire screams richness. I winced when I saw his apple watch on his wrist. When our eyes met, he winked at me which made me almost puke. This was the first time he does that and I swear, he looks like a scary person. A handsome but scary person. “So, what’s the thing you’re going to give me?” I asked her straight away as I have no plan on staying here longer. Shonda smiled sweetly and walked back to her table. She got something under her table. My forehead creased when she handed me a white paper bag. “What’s this?” I asked her. “Guess what? You should open it, sweetheart.” She looked like a kid who gave the person she likes a gift and now she wants to see my reaction while opening it. “What’s this for?” “It’s for your birthday. You’re turning 22 by next week. And I thought it would be special if I give you now my gift. Because obviously, you won’t be here in Manhattan. Ithaca is far for me to travel even though I have a driver.”   I sighed heavily and smiled a little. “You don’t have to do this, Shonda.” “Oh, sweetheart. Of course, I know that. But I insist giving you that. That was the gift your father wanted to give you. If he’s still alive, for sure he’d buy that necklace to you.” I became excited when I heard the word “necklace”. I am not the type of person who likes material things but when it comes to necklace, I am becoming a new person. I developed my love for necklace when I was a child. My mom is a jewelry collector and most of it are necklaces. Because of her, I dreamt of collecting necklace and that’s exactly what I am doing now that I am already an adult. Marcos stood as well and he got something from his pocket. “Shonda told me how much you like necklace. That is why I’ve decided to give this to you.” He handed me a small box. More like a ring’s box which men are using whenever they plan to propose to their girlfriends. I was hesitant to accept it but he insisted. I opened it and saw how beautiful that pendant necklace is. “You liked it?” I bit my lower lip and nodded. “Yeah. Thanks for this. I didn’t expect you would give me something like this which is too expensive.” He smirked. “You deserve expensive things, Kate.” I turned to Shonda so I wouldn’t have to respond to his statement. “I am really thankful, Shonda. But really, you don’t have to do this. By taking care of my father’s company, I think that is a very generous gift you could give me.” She swats her hands in the air and chuckled. Before I bid my goodbye, I hugged Shonda and exchange a handshake to Marcos. I spent my afternoon in my father’s house. I stayed in this house until my mom died. As much as I want to stay here with my dad, I couldn’t do it so I ran away. I was in middle school when Stephen adopted me in their house. That’s where I met Jane as his girlfriend. It was an awkward thing that I am living in Stephen’s and Jane would always visit the house. Everyone knew back then that Jane hated me at first. But I’m glad that I was able to show her that I never liked Stephen in a romantic way. Good thing is that, she believed me. Now we’re inseparable. My hands landed on the soft fabric of the mattress. I was in my parents’ room. This place becomes my most favorite place when I was a kid. In this place, I saw how my parents loved each other so much. Every morning, I was able to witness their kissing moments. In this room, we cherished each other like we’re the only people in the world. I miss my mom and my dad as well. I didn’t expect this is happening to me right now. I lost my parents at this age. Yes, people might see me as someone formidable, but deep inside, I was wrecked. After getting my things in that house, my plan was to go straight to Stephen’s house. But then, I found myself driving to the nearest bar. It wasn’t my first time entering into a certain high-class bar. But it was the first time I am going alone. I feel kind of nervous but I continued. Before I was able to get inside, I have to show my ID to the bouncer to make sure my age in legal. There were lots of people inside. Neon lights that kept on blinking made my eyes lose its capability to see clearly. While I am heading to the counter to buy drink, I saw a familiar figure standing in the dark area of the bar. I am curious because he kept on glancing at my side from time to time but I chose not to put give that guy attention since my sole purpose here is to drink my stress away. Minutes later, the DJ started playing music that hyped most of the people inside the bar. They were dancing nonstop and most of the time people especially girls bumped and elbowed me while they’re partying. I tried to walk towards the safe space but I ended up being pushed by someone. Instead of getting into that place, I found myself being squeezed by people. My head is spinning due to the alcohol that I’ve been drinking. I started panicking when I was continually pushed by other people. But then everything stopped when someone grabbed me by the hand and pulled me away from those people. He used his arms to cover me until we reached the quiet side of the bar. I squinted my eyes and looked up so I can see who’s the man who saved me. “Liam?” I was surprised seeing him in holding my arms. “What are you doing here, Kate?” he asked using his serious voice. His hands are still on my arms and based on his expression, he plans not letting me go. “Are you alone?” I simply nodded at him. He stared at me for seconds and moved his face closer to me. “Are you drunk, Kate?” When I noticed how close he was to me, I moved away a little but I stepped onto something and it made me lost my balance. I thought my back would meet the floor but Liam was able to catch me immediately. His arms held me by the waist and pulled me up, making our faces moved closer to each other. I can smell his breath. Minty. There’s a part of me that’s missing his kisses and the way his tongue explored my mouth. I closed my eyes and tried to move away from him but he tightened his grip. “Don’t move too much, Kate.” “Let me go. I can move alone.” “You can barely stand. You can’t take care of yourself in times like this. Let me take care of you until we reached the exit.” As much as I want to protest, I never did. I just let him do what pleases him. It took us lots of minute before we finally made our way to the opening area of the bar. There were no people outside when we get there. “Really, Kate? You’re here alone? In this bar, without someone who will guide you?” My forehead creased and my eyes narrowed at him. I know that this could be a good time to make him fall in love with me but I can’t help but to feel irritated at him. “You shouldn’t be here.” I looked down to hide my irritation. I have to calm down. I don’t want him to see me angry. I might lose the chance continuing my plan of seducing him if he saw this side of me. When I think I am now able to look at his face, I raised my head and gave him a smile. I opened my arms and gestured that I am welcoming him for a hug. “What are you doing?” he asked me while one of his brows is raised. I widened my smile and expanded my arms towards him. “I want a hug,” I told him, while acting like I was drunk when I know myself I wasn’t. He looked even more confused. Maybe he’s thinking that I am crazy because of the way I look and the way I act. When he didn’t move, I grabbed the chance to hold him by the arms and tiptoed so I can give him a kiss on the cheeks. He froze in his position. It took him several seconds to finally react. “What have you done?” I smiled with my teeth flashing to him. “I just want to say thank you for accepting me as your assistant. I swear to you that I will be helpful and I won’t give you headache. I’ll be good to you, I promise.” I said then tried to reach his cheeks but he looked sideways making me kiss him on the lips.
