I held my head the moment I opened my eyes using both of my hand. I am in pain, like literally in pain. It’s not just my head but also my body. It felt sore. I feel like I was being punched numerous times by someone who hated me a lot.
I closed my eyes and calmed myself down. When my heartbeat slowly returning into normal, I immediately opened my eyes when I realized that I wasn’t in my own apartment here in Manhattan. I put one of my hands in my mouth to cover it while I was studying the whole room.
I consider myself as a rich person because of my father but damn, I’ve never been in this kind of room where everything I see screams money. If I’m going to add the total cost of it, it will be in million dollars. All of it are authentic.
The room also feels great. There’s an air purifier, air conditioner. Also, what amazed me is, there’s an aquarium inside with different kinds of fish species swimming inside it.
I stood up and walked towards the aquarium when I saw a certain fish that was once my favorite. A gold fish. I pointed my finger onto the glass and smiled at the fish.
“How are you?” I asked the fish using a small voice. If someone would see me, he or she might think that I’m crazy because I talk to fish. But I don’t mind. I love animals, specifically a gold fish.
After having a small talk with the fish, I stood straight and looked around.
Why am I here? Where is this place? Am I still in Manhattan? I lightly scratch my nape while trying to remember what happened last night.
What I remember is that I went into a certain bar and was squeezed by the people inside the bar until someone helped me get out of the place. My eyes widened when I finally recalled who was it.
Liam Carlton!
I almost jumped in my position when I figured out where I currently am. I rushed through the door to run away but then I noticed my bag on the bedside table that is why I run back to get it.
I was wearing something else, not my clothes that I am wearing yesterday and as much as I want to get it or find it, I’ve come to realize that it is better to leave the place immediately.
I was about to open the door when I heard the click from the knob of the door. Someone was opening it from the outside and it was too late for me to hide or move because he was standing now in front of me.
My boss, my professor, Liam Carlton, wearing a khaki short and a fitted shirt is now standing in front of me. Based on his appearance, it’s as if he came from a long walk outside or maybe he came from the gym and went straight toward this room to check on me.
He’s too hot and I couldn’t even remove my eyes from him.
I cleared my throat when he snapped his fingers in front of me.
“Are you leaving?” he asked with one of his brows raised at me.
I was looking sideways, attempting not to meet his gaze. I tried smiling but it ended up such an awkward smile.
“I’m sorry, but can I ask you questions? I am really confused right now and I want to know how did I end up sleeping in this room? Wait, is this your room?” I asked with my index finger pointing inside.
Liam didn’t answer right away, so I grabbed the chance to ask him more questions.
“Did something happen between us, Sir?”
His eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?”
I can see that he’s scrutinizing my expressions. I know that he knew what I was talking about. I don’t understand but I am sure I can feel like he’s trying to tease me.
“I mean, did something happen at us, sexually? Did we have s*x? Did you see my body? Because I was sure this wasn’t the clothes I am wearing yesterday. Did I do something wrong or bad? Are you going to fire me?”
“Hey, hey, slow down, Kate. One question at a time. I will answer those questions one by one. But first, you have to clean yourself up because my maid wasn’t able to do it last night. She just changed your clothes without showering you. You puked a lot last night. It would be better if you take a shower so you can calm down at least.”
I bit my lower lip and nodded at him. I am expecting him to get mad at me but it didn’t happen.
“Go to the bathroom, I’ll call Nancy to prepare your clothes.”
I frowned when I heard the name.
“Nancy?”
It wasn’t my intention to ask questions because I know I was just a visitor here but I can’t help but be curious of who is Nancy. I think it was related to the fact that I don’t want him to be involved with another woman while I am pursuing him.
“Yes, Nancy. She’s one of the maids here in the house. I will be calling her because she’s the one who took care of you last night when we came home.”
My heart skipped a beat when he used the words ‘we’ and ‘home’ in one sentence. For some reason, I feel like I belonged here.
“I’m really sorry for the trouble, Sir.” I looked down. I don’t want to see his reaction if he ever got disappointed in me.
“Just go inside and shower. I’ll meet you in the dining room once you’re finished.”
I nodded and then walked back inside. I made sure to put the bag near me. I was kind of worried as he might’ve checked my belongings. I was so stupid for not thinking straight last night.
I should’ve gone home last night when we got out of the bar. This is disaster and I hate it, really.
I used cold water while taking a bath. I have to make sure that every single cell in my body is alive before I face Liam Carlton once again.
I cleaned my body and when I am almost done, I heard a knock on the bathroom door. I turned the shower off and get the clean towel on the rail. I covered my body with it before I walked towards the door to open it.
A woman in her mid-thirties, with a wide smile on her face, handed me my clothes.
“Your clothes are already clean, Miss Kate. You can wear it after you take a bath.”
I smiled at her and said thank you but before she leaves the room, I managed to ask her one thing.
“You are Nancy, right?”
She immediately shook her head. “No, Miss Kate. I’m Louisa. Nancy is a bit busy in the backyard that is why she asked me if I could bring your clothes to you.”
I smiled at her and gestured that she may go.
There’s a huge part of me who wants to meet Nancy. Obviously, because she took care of me, changed my clothes last night, and saw my body without clothes on. I wasn’t even wearing underwear the whole night. I looked down at my hand and bring my clothes on the dry area of the bathroom. After I dried my skin, I started wearing my clothes.
I sighed before I went out the bathroom. My hair was still covered with a towel so it would easily dry the hair.
I immediately noticed the basic hygiene kit on the table near the bed. And there was a note written on the side, telling me that I can use it.
I was glad that Liam is considerate enough for letting me use these things. Despite the trouble I gave him, he didn’t look mad a while ago and he seemed like a calm person.
I put the strap of my bag on my shoulder and slowly walked towards the dining room. When one of the maids saw me, it came to me and lead me towards the place in the house where Liam is waiting for me.
I can’t help but be surprised when I saw the food on the table. It’s like there’s a celebration.
“Is it your birthday today?” I joked before sitting down the seat adjacent to his.
He looked at me with a shock on his face.
“You knew about my birthday?” he asked, confused.
I narrowed my eyes and shook my head.
“No, I was just joking. But… wait… is today your birthday?” His expression has changed. He looked away and lightly shake his head.
I am starting to panic and I don’t know what to do anymore. For some reason, I feel like I’ve offended him.
“I’m sorry, I was just kidding. I joked about it because it wasn’t a normal thing to me to see lots of food in a single table.”
He was looking down but I noticed the shaking of his shoulders. When he raised his head, that’s when I realized that he’s chuckling. No, let me correct myself, he’s laughing which made me more confused.
“Excuse me?” I can’t help but to call for his attention.
“Yeah, sorry. You looked like you’re about to cry that is why. No, don’t worry. It’s not my birthday. I just want to eat with you so I asked the chef if he could cook for us.”
“We’ll eat all of these? What is this, honestly? Is this a punishment for the trouble I did last night? If yes, then I am sorry. It wasn’t my intention to become a hindrance for you to party. I know that I ruined your night but don’t worry, I’ll try to make it up for you.”
He nodded.
“And this is how you make it up for me. Eat breakfast with me.”
“Are you mad?” I asked directly.
He grabbed the spoon beside his plate and tried the soup on his left side.
“Hmm. This taste good. You should try this one, Kate.”
“You haven’t answered my question.”
He sat properly and wiped the excess liquid on his lips.
“I am not mad at you. I am not the person who gets mad easily. I was born with lots of patience within me. So, you’ve got nothing to worry about. I actually enjoyed your company last night. I didn’t know you were that funny.”
I raised one of my brows.
“What?”
He stopped and stared at me. He studied my expressions one more time and then he narrowed his eyes at me.
“You don’t remember what happened after we left the bar?”
There’s no point of lying so I shook my head.
“I don’t remember anything.”
He leaned his back on the chair and fold his arms across his chest.
“You asked me to go to another bar where less people are coming. So, I did. I drink several glasses of Negroni Sbagliato while you insisted to drink Bacardi. It took you five glasses to finally fell asleep. And while we’re on our way to my car, you threw up to my newly purchased shoes.”
I covered my mouth once again.
“I’m really sorry.”
“No. You shouldn’t be. Because that’s not the most disappointing thing you’ve done to me yet.”
He grinned at me. I was expecting he would tell me what is the worst thing I did last night but he didn’t continue whatever he’s saying. Instead, he focused his attention to eating food on the table.
“You really won’t tell me what I did last night? Seriously?”
He nodded.
“There are things you need to remember yourself. In our case, I don’t want to tell you about it. You should think what you’ve done to disappoint me that much.”
I swallowed hard.
“Wait, hey! Give me a sec. You told me that you’re not mad at me and now you’re telling me this?”
He shrugged.
“I told you I’m not mad you but I never told you that I wasn’t disappointed. That’s two different things.”
I blew a short breath of frustration before I grabbed the spoon.
“Also, you have to come with me. I need someone who can help me finish the pending paper works I have in the office.”
“But it’s a long drive from here to Ithaca and my job will start next week.”
“Who said we’re going to Ithaca?”
I remained silent in my position.
“We’re not going there. We’re going upstairs. I have an office on the second floor. Now, all you got to do is to eat because we’ve got a lot to do.”
