830 Words
Chapter 17: In His Arms, She Found Home Elena was finally discharged from the hospital, the steady beeping of machines and the sterile smell of the room fading into the background as Alessandro helped her into the car. Her body still felt fragile, each movement reminding her of the bullet wound, but the strength in his presence made her feel safer than she had in days. It was surreal—being outside the sterile walls of the hospital and back in the real world, with Alessandro at her side. The drive to his house was quiet. Elena rested her head against the window, watching the world pass by in a blur of color, the familiar sights of the city feeling distant, almost foreign. It was as though everything had shifted while she had been in the hospital, and now that she was out, she wasn’t entirely sure where she fit into it anymore. But Alessandro was there, always close, always steady. His hand would occasionally reach over to hers, his thumb brushing over her skin with a tenderness that made her heart ache. He hadn’t left her side for a moment since the shooting, and even now, as they pulled into his driveway, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of security. When they reached the front door, Alessandro was quick to help her out of the car, his hands gentle as they guided her toward the house. She could feel the warmth of the sun beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the yard, but in the midst of everything, all she wanted was to be with him. “Are you okay?” Alessandro asked, his voice low and soft as he held the door open for her, his eyes filled with concern. “I’m fine,” Elena said with a small smile, though her voice still carried the weight of the exhaustion she felt. “Just... tired.” He nodded, his gaze never leaving her as he led her into the house. The warmth of the place was comforting, but it was his presence that truly made her feel at ease. They had spent so much time apart, so much distance between them for reasons neither of them could control. But now, everything felt different. As they walked through the hallway, Alessandro paused for a moment, turning toward her with a look that was both soft and determined. “I think you need to rest,” he said gently. “You’ve been through a lot, Elena.” She shook her head, trying to protest, but before she could say anything more, Alessandro had already crossed the room in a few long strides. He scooped her up into his arms, effortlessly lifting her into a bridal hold, and she gasped in surprise. “Alessandro, what—” “Shh,” he said softly, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “You need rest. I’m not taking no for an answer.” Her heart skipped a beat as he cradled her in his strong arms, his hold both protective and tender. The moment was so intimate, so unspoken, and yet everything about it felt like it was exactly what she needed. Elena couldn’t remember the last time anyone had cared for her like this—had shown such care, such devotion without asking for anything in return. “You’re spoiling me,” she whispered, a quiet laugh escaping her lips. “I’m not spoiling you,” he replied softly, his eyes locked on hers. “I’m taking care of you, Elena. That’s all.” Before she could respond, he carried her the rest of the way into the bedroom. The bed was large and inviting, the soft linens a welcome sight after her days in the hospital. Alessandro gently placed her down on the mattress, making sure she was comfortable before pulling the blanket over her. “Get some sleep,” he said, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “I’ll be right here.” Elena looked up at him, feeling an overwhelming surge of emotion. He had saved her in more ways than one—physically, emotionally. And now, he was showing her a tenderness that was as deep as it was unwavering. She wasn’t sure what the future held for them, but in that moment, she knew she wasn’t alone. She had someone who cared, someone who would be there, no matter what. “I’m glad I’m here with you,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. A soft smile spread across his face, and he leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. “You’re safe here. Always.” As she closed her eyes, allowing the exhaustion to take over, she felt a sense of peace she hadn’t known in a long time. In Alessandro’s arms, in his presence, she finally felt like maybe—just maybe—she had found a place where she truly belonged.
