“mum you alright?” I ask.
“Poor thing, look at her injuries. She’s a beautiful girl” She sighs then suddenly she has a confused look on her face “What is she? She doesn’t smell like a human nor a werewolf.” She curiously sniffs Kali.
“I don’t know what your talking about. I know she isn’t a werewolf cause I can’t sense a wolf but all I smell is lavenders.”
“Oh yeah I smelt that at the clinic. I thought it was just me since no one said anything, not till Brett mentioned it then I knew it wasn’t just me.”
“And you didn’t think to mention it?” a little annoyed at him.
“Well a lot has happened over the past few days, it just slipped my mind. She smelled like a human before the incident. Well I wonder why you can’t smell it and yet you’re her mate.”
That’s really got my gears moving in my head wondering why I can’t smell that.
Talking with mum and filling her in on the details that my dad missed out. I can see her thinking hard and trying to add everything to come up with an answer but always ends up looking stumped. Then Nik clears his throat.
“Ahem… ok don’t get mad I just remembered this.”
“Just say it already…” rolling my eyes, it doesn’t surprise me that he’s forgotten and just remembered something.
“Ok. So remember how she found out about our kind?” he continues with me staring at him waiting for his explanation “Well we didn’t tell her about us being werewolves she figured it out with help.”
“What help? Who helped her?” I curiously ask.
“She said a voice told her to look out at the window and that’s when she saw wolves.”
A voice? Does she have a wolf? She could be a late bloomer. My wolf and I can’t sense a wolf and even as her mate we would have sensed it but there’s nothing.
“I can see you thinking son. There is definitely an explanation for everything and the only person that can give us those answers is your mate.”
“Nothing adds up. She’s not a werewolf, and it seems like the changes started happening after the incident.”
“Well I guess all you can do now son is pray moon goddess will bring her back to you soon.”
Still trying to add everything up in my head and what this all means leaves me with more questions rather than answers. All I can do for her right is keep her safe from those lurking beyond the boarder.
“Why is she cold?”
“We don’t know. Even doc doesn’t have an answer. She’s fine though.”
Mum stands there looking at Kali and I can see that she is thinking really hard then looks at me, questioningly yet curiously like she wants to try something. At this point I will try anything that will help bring my mate back.
“It’s a long shot son but it doesn’t hurt to try.”
“I will do anything.” I’m all ears for whatever idea my mother has.
“Your mate bond. Although she’s human and does not feel it as intensely as you but there is a mate bond no doubt. You remember the story of your father becoming alpha?”
“Of course. How he challenged Dane’s father for alpha position and barely came out alive from it. If it wasn’t for him we would still be under a mad alpha. What does that have to do with this situation?”
“You know your father isn’t a strong fighter right, but he was the only other person with alpha blood. Dane’s father was crazy strong and we knew it wasn’t going to be easy.”
“but he won so he was obviously strong enough or he wouldn’t be alpha and it most probably would have been Dane today, thank goodness for that.”
Shaking her head noticeably reliving the memory of dads fight for alpha.
“I didn’t want him to go ahead with the fight but he was doing it for his family friends and the people of this town, to free them from Dane’s father tyranny. I knew he wasn’t going to change his mind so I helped him train to get stronger leading up to the fight but we both knew that it still wouldn’t be enough.”
She pauses and looks out at the balcony and sighs and continues on with her story.
“The fight started off bad for your father, he got a few good hits on Dane’s father but it wouldn’t be enough for him to win. Half way through the fight your father was getting tired and started getting taking on more beating, however, he still wouldn’t submit and I knew I was going to lose my mate if I didn’t try something.”
Looking at me with hopeful eyes, she grabs my hand and places it on Kali’s.
“Somehow, I was able to give your father strength through our mate bond. I could feel him as if we were both fighting, like we were one. Every bit of my being was focused on this new found connection. I held on to it for the rest of the fight. Every hit your father took, I felt it. Every bit of muscle in his body I could feel it as if it were my own. I shared everything I had with your father that day, our bond saved him.”
She’s looking down at Kali and back at me.
“I don’t know if it will work, but it’s worth a try.”
Ok super confused and not sure how I am going to do that but I definitely am going to give it a go.
“How do I even begin?”
“Concentrate on your body, your bond, and her body. Stay calm and focused. It may differ for you, for me it was like a click. Like a part of your body clicked back into place.”
Taking a seat next to Kali holding her hand and focusing on her, for the next ten minutes I sit there trying to make a connection but with no luck. Feeling a little frustrated that I can’t feel anything other than our bond, I want to be able to help any way I can.
“try again later son. Don’t force it.”
Nodding in reply to my mother, give Kali’s hand a kiss and place it on her side before standing.
“Now where is Penny? I want to see that beautiful face of hers.”
I sigh looking towards the balcony. Knowing how much my mother loves Penny and how much she hoped that we would be mated. It is partially the reason I barely kept communication, it would always end up she asking me why I haven’t taken Penny as my mate.
“She sends her apologies. She’s busy on the boarder today.”
“It’s a shame. She would have been a good mate.”
“Ugh! Really! I’m not doing this anymore mother! Penny is great but sadly I never felt that way about her but now there’s no chance at all now that I have Kali, my mate!”
Annoyed with my mother I stomp past her and out to the balcony. Taking in deep breaths to calm myself. She follows me out and puts her hand on my forearm. No I’m having this talk with her again, I have a mate now.
“I'm so sorry Mason, I didn’t mean it like that. I’m happy that you have your mate with you now. There is nothing better than finding your other half that is picked for you by our moon goddess. Please forgive your mother’s poor choice of words?”
I wrap my arm around her shoulders and give her a kiss on her forehead. I forget my parents aren’t getting any younger. With my mother in my arm I’ve just realized how much smaller she is next to me and give her a light squeeze.
“Forgiven if you forgive me for my reaction. My heart is with my mate, always has been and always will be.”
“Forgotten.” Lifting her hand to her head pretending to remove the memory and throwing it away making me chuckle. “as soon as that mate of yours wakes up I want grandbabies right away!”
“Oh you will get your grandbabies mum.” I say with a smirk on my face.
I would love nothing more than for Kali to carry my pups. It would be a dream come true to have my own little family with my fated mate. Thinking about it makes me smile.
“I’ll have a niece named after me thank you!”
Mum quickly turns to walk back in the room and towards Nik who’s back on the bed working on his laptop.
“Your turn now bro.” laughing at Nik.
Watching mum storm back into the room towards him and Nik’s reaction realizing his mistake for piping up at the wrong time, he knows mum is going to ear bash him now about having pups.
“And what about you? When are you going to give me grandbabies?” giving him a light smack.
“Ow… really mum? I have a phobia called Vag-O-Phobia” blocking his body from mum’s smacks and laughing at the same time.
“I still want grandbabies from both of you. With modern technology Nikki you can find a surrogate.”
She stops her smacks and walks over to the love seat facing the fire placing. I walk back in and sit next to Kali still lightly laughing at Nik, he looks at me.
“You know you’re lucky you have found your mate, if I ever come across my fated mate and moon goddess if she has paired me with a ‘she’… I think I’d die.”
Mum throws a cushion at Nik which he quickly dodges and we both laugh.
“Nikki you better watch that tongue of yours. Do not insult the moon goddess like that!”
“Sorry mum.”
We all sit around talking about random topics like, stories of growing up, pack business, the family business, well more like dad and Nik’s since I have my own dreams and haven’t worked a day there.
“Shall we have lunch? I can ask Sharon to bring it up here and we can have it on the balcony.”
“And let Sharon know to join us also. I want to catch up with her and discuss a few things.”
I mind link Sharon to let her know and to join us. We continue chatting a while longer till Sharon arrives with the lunch, a tray of sandwiches, chicken wraps and a variety of diced up fruits. I take the tray off her and take it outside letting her and mum chat and follow me out to the outdoor couch and placing it on the table in front of them.
“Mason this is such a beautiful view. The house is gorgeous too.”
“Agree Sharon. My son is going to have to take me on tour of the estate.”
“Thank you Sharon.” Picking up a wrap and taking a bite “Mum we’ll take a tour before you leave. I’ll let you two catch up.”
Leaving them both to continue with their catch up. I head back to Kali wanting to try again and see if I can connect with her the way mum explained.
Pulling the seat from the end of the bed and placing it next to Kali. Sitting there holding her hand, with my eyes closed and concentrating on our bond trying for some time. Each time I try I can feel the sparks playing in between our hands and the pull but nothing happens and it only frustrates me more.
“Boys, stop what you’re doing and eyes on me.”
Opening my eyes and Nik closing his laptop, we both focus on our mother.
“Sharon will be taking care of the house and maintaining it. She will also be attending to Kali making sure she is taken care.”
“No it’s fine mum we can…” she cuts me off.
“its not fine son. Has she had a sponge wash or any sort like that since she has been in a coma?” we both don’t answer “hmm I figured that much. You will still be able to do your duties or work without having to worry about the house. Nothing will change only that Sharon will make sure that the house is taken care of.” We both nod in reply “Sharon will bring in some extra hands to help, since it looks like it will be busy here for some time.” She turns to Sharon “Thank you again my friend.” Now looking at me and smiling “I’m ready for that tour now.”
