Nik still standing there beside me with a firm grip on my shoulder, both looking at my beautiful mate.

“Nik, I finally get to touch her, smell her scent, hold her in my arms, the first time she has called me, wanting and needing me and just like that she’s gone. I waited patiently for three days and watched her from afar, why would moon goddess gift her to me and then take her away from me? Have I done something to… ?” Nik cuts me off.

“Stop Mase. Look at your mate, now tell me do you still feel the bond? Can you still feel the spark when you touch her hand? Listen, can you hear her heart beat? Her breathing? Tell me brother, tell me what you feel and hear.”

Touching her hand I can feel the spark at the tip of my fingers, picking up her hand and placing it on my lips, the sparks softly tickle my lips making me smile, sitting still and listening to heart and breathing, I can hear her even breathing and the beat of her heart, but most of all I still feel the pull, my whole being and body still pulling me and connecting me to my mate, my mate is still here, she’s still fighting to come back, I smile, happy at the thought she is still here with me and fighting. Staying silent, smiling and holding her hand, Nik gives my should soft squeeze.

“Now hold on to that thought brother. Stay strong for your mate, she needs you now more than ever to stay strong or your name wouldn’t have been the last name she would have said.”

He’s right, I need to be strong for her. Kissing her hand I place it back by her side then kiss her forehead and shuffle off the bed standing there looking at her and smiling.

Turning to Nik and looking at him and surprising him with a hug.

“Mason. Nikki.”

Forgetting that doc was still here. Smiling at Nik one more time before facing doc.

“Doc.” I give him a quick slight nod.

“Miss Smith seems to be in a coma like state. All her vitals are normal and seem to be in a healthy state, I just can’t explain why her body is cold, however it’s not affecting her negatively. I have taken some blood samples and will send them off to the lab to see if we can find anything else. If there isn’t anything else you need from me I’ll be on my way to start on the blood tests. I will come back tomorrow to check on her again.”

“How long will she be in a coma?”

“That’s a question I can’t answer. She could wake up soon, tomorrow, next week, it could be months or years, it is up to her.”

Looking at her, remembering Nik’s words, closing my eyes I take a breath and exhale, encouraging myself to stay positive and to stay strong. Taking a few steps and stopping just before the bedroom bench gazing at my sleeping beauty. Doc lightly pats me on the shoulder.

“Have faith. Do what you can here and talk to her. She may or may not hear you but anything is possible. If there isn’t anything else I can do for you today, I’ll leave you with your mate.”

“Doc, thank you. Please, let me know the results of her blood test as soon as you have an answer.”

He nods. Shakes my hand then Nik’s then proceeds to leave put the door shutting it behind him.

Not sure what to say or do, I ask Nik to stay with me for a while. I drag the bench to the side of the bed for us to sit on. I take my her hand and hold, letting the sparks tingle. Nik pulls the throw blanket over her legs.

“Thanks Nik. Thanks for being by her. Taking care of her when you didn’t have to and I wanted to, she’s a great person.”

“Don’t worry about it bro. I’ll always be there for you, no matter what.”

Sitting there holding her hand with the cast on it and caressing it with my thumb. Thinking about the flowers I bought her and how she held them in her arm, the look on her face when she heard my name and blushed. I look around the room looking for flowers.

“Where’s her flowers I bought her?”

“Probably still in the car. I’ll go have a look.”

Nik leaves the room leaving me alone with Kali. My first time alone with Kali and I wish it was under different circumstances, wishing she could speak to me and let me know her thoughts and feelings. I want to learn everything about her, her favourite food, her happiest and saddest memories, what her life was like growing up, I just want to know everything. I want to tell her how much she means to me, take her to meet my parents, moon goddess I want to introduce her to everyone as my future wife and Luna. Deep in thought I get a mink link from Kyle.

Boss…

Kyle. Anything?

Nothing. If I keep going he’ll die.

Ok keep trying and then you know what to do.

Kyle if he isn’t going to give any information then he’s no good to us.

It’s not that. I was told that Miss Smith was having some difficulty about twenty minutes ago… it may or may not be a coincidence but twenty minutes ago during the interrogation, he weirdly went crazy and then suddenly nothing, just back to his normal groans. James and I thought he might be reacting to the torture but I thought I’d let you know before I go any further.

It couldn’t be a coincidence could it? Did a rogue just react to Kali? Confused and don’t know what to think about Kyle’s information.

Keep him alive. I’ll bring in some others to guard the cells I’m going to need you and James to get some more rogues. In the meantime if anything out of the ordinary happens, keep a record of it.

I try to mind link Penny but she’s blocked all mind links. Annoyed with myself for forgetting that she would also be taking it hard, she is the closest to Kali and known her the longest of us all. Now I’m worried she is on her own.

“Do you know if anyone has heard from Penny?” asking Nik who is rearranging the flowers.

“I haven’t asked anyone yet. Ask one of the boys.”

Mike. Brett. Are you guys with Penny?

Yup. We saw her take off into the woods and followed her.

Ok. Keep your distance and give her some space. How far are you guys?

We almost at the boarder.

The boarder? Why would she go that far to the boarder when Kali is like this?

Stop her if she tries to cross. It’s too dangerous for her to go out alone.

Yes I know she’s gonna kick your ass but if you don’t stop her I’ll do more than kick your guys ass if you don’t come back with her!

And DO NOT let her talk you guys into crossing the boarder. You guys are already in trouble for yesterday.

“She’s near the boarder.”

“Why would she go that far to the boarder when Kali needs her here?”

“My exact thoughts.”

“She didn’t tell you?”

“No she’s blocked her mind link. Brett told me. I’ve already warned them to stop her and to bring her back”

“Oh good luck to those two, they could do with a good workout after just eating and laying around for the last few days.”

He finishes with the flowers and places it on the coffee table then making his way back to sit beside me.

“So… what do you want to do now?”

“Right now… I just want to be with her, that I know for sure.”

“Well first things first, get your ass in there…” he points towards the closet “…and wash your ass, you stink!”

Frowning and looking at Kali he gives me a back hand on the leg and starts pushing me and shooing me, moon goddess I swear I want to wring his neck.

Walking into the closet looking at the side where Kali’s clothes are and walk over to the opposite side to find the key in the hidden compartment to unlock my side. Sliding the roller door back to give me access to my clothes. Grabbing me grey track pants and a black t-shirt before heading to the shower.

Looking at my reflection in the mirror and now realizing I was dirty, a bit of dirt and dry blood on my face, my tears left trails through them instantly reminding me how I felt, pushing it aside I focus on Nik’s words to stay strong for her, that’s right stay strong, stay strong for her.

Drying my hair as I walk out from the closet, Nik’s fluffing her pillows and has put her underneath the duvet covers.

“feel better?”

“Yeah a bit. It was kind of relaxing in the shower.”

“You were in there for quite some time, I thought you fell asleep. Hey… talking about sleep, where are you planning to sleep?”

“Here?”

“Here, where?”

“Well I don’t want to sleep in bed with her, I don’t want to freak her out if she wakes and finds me in bed with her… probably just here on the floor next to her.”

“sleep in your wolf form.”

“No! I at least want to hold her hand to help me sleep, it’s not going to be comfortable on the floor.”

“You have to though. What if she wakes up and still freaks out when she sees you? Your wolf form is better since she was ok with your wolf.”

He has a good point. I don’t want to go back to square one of being far away from her.

“ok yeah sounds good.”

“You going to call dad? Or do you want me to do it?”

“I’ll call him tomorrow. I just want to spend the rest of the day here.”

“ok well since you’re here I may as well catch up on some work. You going to be ok here?”

“yeah. I’ll let you know if I need help with anything. Thanks Nik.”

He leaves the room, leaving me alone with Kali. I push the seat away to give me some space and slide down to sit on the floor with my back leaning against the bed, and bringing Kali’s hand to rest on my shoulder. Playing with her fingers and then caressing her hand, continuously playing with the spark, rubbing it against my cheek then giving her hand a kiss, mindlessly doing this for some time. I’ve been needing this for so long before she even came into my life.

It’s getting dark outside and my butt is sore from sitting for so long, not sure how long I stayed in that. Changing my position to leaning my side against the bed and facing her. Without thinking I just start tapping on her cast and start humming a made up tune and looking at her.

“Hope you don’t mind my terrible humming. I just made this one up.”

I stop humming and start talking to her.

“The first time I saw you, my heart broke seeing you like that. I vowed from that moment on I would protect you no matter what. Then when you woke up at the pack clinic and was terrified of my me, I was crushed. I ran for so long that day I think I actually tired myself out. I ran the boarders that night and killed any rogue I came across. I was a mess. But I wasn’t going to give up, nope not on you, I hassled Nik the whole time even. Then you walked out the clinic holding the flowers I bought you, my heart felt like it came back to life.”

I get up off the floor and pull the chair closer to the bed to sit on. Holding her hand and softly cupping her cheek. There’s a knock on the door.

“It’s me Nikki. Coming in.”

He comes walking in with a tray of food and places it on the side draw next to me.

“Eat. I haven’t seen you eat all day. You need to look after yourself too.” Giving me a little nudge “I went down to get something to eat and the boys said you missed dinner too.”

“Yeah I didn’t realize I sat here for that long, I guess I lost track of time.”

Picking up the tray and laying it on my lap. On it is a big plate of lasagna, another plate with sandwiches, cheesy muffins, and sausage rolls. I dig in and start on the lasagna, then take a bite of the muffin, then back to the lasagna, then a bite of a sausage roll, then back to the lasagna, damn I am hungry like nobody’s business.

“Easy tiger there’s more down stairs. Anyways brief update. For tonight bro, I’ve asked everyone to leave you alone and we will deal with it tomorrow. I spoke to dad and briefed him on what’s happening here, you have to call him tomorrow, I switched out Kyle and James from the cells to take charge of securing the perimeter with the others.”

“Damn bro, you sure you don’t want to be the next alpha?” lightly laughing while still eating. “How is mum and dad?”

“They’re good, you know what mum’s like, she’s happy and sad for you but hopeful same as dad. Mum said she’ll be here tomorrow… oh and dad is sending a heap of wolves to help with the rogues.”

“Thanks man! Any word of Penny?” wiping my mouth and putting the tray to the side.

“She’s locked herself in her room, no one’s been able to talk to her. I think you might need to check on her.”
