You need to get stronger

Surprised at his response I think it took me five seconds to realize he wasn’t denying it but confirming it. I jump from the bed looking out the window at the trees, that voice again seemed so much clearer, I felt that connection was stronger. Had it not been for the voice I wouldn’t see the truth but now I wonder how many others are werewolves, I turn to see Nikki sitting bored on the bed,

“Ok spit it out,” he says before I ask he starts throwing some questions out there and answers them “who else? At least two thirds of the town the other third are humans. Am I one? Of course. Are you one?” answering his own questions as if reading from a frequently asked questions page. He sniffs the air and comes closer sniffing me “no you are definitely human but…you do smell different a little. Ok my turn. How did you figure it out?

‘I… ummm…” a bit stunned and speechless and not sure where to start “I ahhh ummm heard a voice and it ahh umm told me to look outside and that’s when I saw wolves running into the woods.” Not the best explanation but I’m still trying to understand it all myself.

“a voice?” Nikki sounding intrigued “for a werewolf to hear a it’s either from, one, his or her wolf and , two, one other is mind linking them, for a human…they just batshit crazy.” He laughs loud at the latter while I frown “Oohhh kaaayyyy I’m sorry I was just messing around with you. You hearing voices is nothing out of the ordinary. With the world we live in, anything is possible.”

With everything that has happened, he is definitely right and somehow I'm not surprised nor shocked at this revelation. Seeing how big those wolves were, I'm hoping Penny is ok.

“I heard you say to Mason that Penny is probably tracking him…will she find him and will she be ok?”

“Girl when we said don’t worry about Penny we meant it. Penny is the best tracker and one of our fiercest fighters. She’ll be ok, especially now that Mase will be there.”

I feel a slight pang in the heart at the last bit of his sentence but it also gives me comfort knowing that she is getting help. My phone starts vibrating from a call and I couldn’t be anymore happier to see Penny’s name.

“Penny!” I scream as I answer the phone.

“Kali scream any louder and you’ll burst my eardrums.”

“Sorry. I’m just happy to hear you’re voice. Are you ok? You back coming now?” excited and relieved to hear her voice and sounding ok.

“Yes I’m fine. I’ll be there later. I have a few things I need to finish up here, it will take a few hours.”

“ok I’ll see you later then?”

"Yes, see you later. Stay close to the boys. Bye kid."

"Bye Penny.'

Getting off the phone with Penny I feel elated and the need to relax couldn’t be more welcomed right now. Nikki’s now laying down on the bed looking like he’s about to fall asleep thinking he has a good idea I jump up on the bed next to him and cuddle into his arm, took only about a minute or two before Nikki’s breathing evens out and he starts snoring lightly, I giggle pulling out my phone and start recording for at least ten seconds of him snoring while I’m pulling faces next to him. Giggling at the video I send it to him so when he checks his phone he will see it.

Not wanting to sleep too long I set my timer for one hour, that should be enough for a nap, letting my body relax I let sleep take over.

I can hear someone humming. Trying to follow the sound, I try to listen more carefully, sounds like it is coming from right up ahead I decide to walk towards it.

Unsure of what I will find ahead or who is ahead I take slow steps and take in my surroundings. Everywhere I look are thick luscious green plants like a jungle, with tall trees that look like they reach the heavens, many different bushes of different coloured flowers all over the place, the grass is so green and not too long but feel so soft beneath my feet, each step getting lost in the sea of grass and different little flowers.

The closer to the sound of the humming I get the thicker bushes become. I can hear a small waterfall up ahead in the same direction of the humming.

A few more steps and almost in arms reach I will be standing in front of plants hanging and drooping down like curtains, stopping just before it, taking a deep breath to settle my nerves, the humming stops and someone speaks,

“come child, let me see you, step through the curtain.”

Without waiting any longer I part the curtain of plants and step through. I’m awestruck at the scenery in front of me, I’ve never seen anything more beautiful than this, I am definitely dreaming,

“come closer child..”

In front of me there is a small stream with a path of stepping stones going through it, on the other side of the stream is a carpet of green grass, in the middle stands a big tree with stairs that wrap around it leading to a room styled beautifully with windows as shapes and patterns I have never seen before.

The room over looks the medium sized waterfall further away, so pretty that it sparkles. In this heavenly area are beautiful plants everywhere, more beautiful than the ones I just saw. The most beautiful thing about this place was that walking through the passing of the curtain of plants, you walk into night, yet everywhere is lit up by tiny orbs making this place look so unreal.

By the stairs is a little beautiful garden with a unique but beautiful white stone table in the middle. Sitting at the table is a beautiful woman with beautiful soft features, she has very long light brown wavy hair that compliments her golden tan skin, she’s also dressed in a beautiful white dress of ancient style, and she is looking at me with beautiful inviting ocean blue eyes and the warmest smile. She motions for me to take a seat opposite of her,

“You have his beautiful brown eyes, makes me happy to see them again.”

“His?” confused and not knowing who she is talking about.

“We’ll talk about that another time. However, you don’t have much time here, your connection to me is still weak. You need to get stronger so you can control the power within you, find it, focus, learn to become peaceful, and don’t let it take over you” She pauses and looks up at the room with sad eyes “My child, you are more than what you think you are. The answers and your place in this world will come to light when the time is right.”

All of a sudden everything starts to disappear before my eyes, I’m trying to fight to get back and screaming… NO! I have questions please come back, fighting but it is no use and just like that I’m left floating alone in the dark.

Light snoring, the sound of footsteps in the corridor, I’m back to reality. Waking up to a dark room, I feel around for my phone to check the time, eight thirty, can’t believe we slept through the timer, I should have set the alarm instead.

I wake up Nikki and giggle remembering the video I sent him, he c***s and eyebrow at me, I move from the bed to turn the light on and stay there watching Nikki pick up his phone, holding in my laugh, watching him rub his eyes while looking at his phone, he stops rubbing his eyes and in the most dramatic he gets off the bed and struts to the bathroom, I hear the tap running and him mumbling, little laughs escape from my mouth but I quickly cover it with my hand to stop myself from completely bursting out in laughter. He steps out of the bathroom looking like his normal handsome self again, standing there posing as if there are cameras around then looks at me and points,

“I better not catch you slip’n”

Acting all gangster, walking like he has a limp and grabbing on his crotch, oh my gosh I couldn’t hold it anymore and let my laugh fill the room. Still acting out his gangster role, rubbing his chin with a hunched back swaying the other hand from side to side in time with his steps.

“ayo, yah know, little Nikki ain’t someone to be play’n wid yo!” he says it in a funny gangster accent.

He finally stops the act and falls on the bed laughing, I’m holding my belly and in stitches of laughter sliding onto the chair this is a memory I will keep, the flamboyant Nikki acting all gangster, probably the only time he acts like a man.

“You two!” Eden is standing at the door with her hand on her hip looking at us like two little kids and clicks her tongue “tsk tsk tsk remember there are other patients here, Nikki if I was not working I would clip your ears and drag you to your father!”

“Sorry Eden, we will keep it down.” I quickly apologize, she nods my way then stares at Nikki, I lower my eyes to the floor to hide my face and press my lips together to stop laughing, I feel like I’m being tortured to not laugh but I don’t want to get scolded again by Eden.

“Oh come on Aunty..” he doesn’t finish his sentence when Eden takes a step further into the room “ok ok okayyy…sorry we’ll keep it down.”

“tsk tsk tsk” Eden replies in disapproval.

“Umm Eden, is it ok if we can go get some food? And we’ll be right back.” I ask.

“There and back Miss Smith and please be quiet when walking down the corridors.” She gives Nikki one more look before leaving the room.

Walking over to the door way I see Brett and Mike slumped on the chairs and then I watch nurse Eden walk further down the corridor.

Looking back at Nikki who is frozen on the bed staring at me, once I close the door we both let out a quiet laugh I lay on the bed next to Nikki and just stare at the ceiling,

“Why do I feel like I’m gonna get into a lot of trouble with you?” both giggling at my comment.

“Honey, trouble is my middle name.” and snaps his fingers with sass, we both laugh and quickly cover our mouth’s “ok let’s go with the boys to get some food, I know a great place that is still open at this time.

“Oooo yes please!” I squeal excitedly.

Both getting ready to leave, Nikki calls Brett to bring the car round the front, instead, Brett steps into the room looking down at the floor,

“Sorry guys, Penny said she doesn’t want Kali leaving her room.”

Nikki goes to say something but I stop him. Sad that I can’t leave my room just for a little while to get food but I don’t want to disappoint Penny.

“Do you know when Penny will be here?” I ask Brett. He gives me a sorry look and shrugs his shoulders. “ok thanks Brett.” I smile at him and sit back down on the bed a little disappointed.

“We still have some left over sushi and I can get some food from the vending machines and some junk to snack on and watch a movie on my phone?” Nikki holding up the sushi tray to show me. “Or I can ring Mase to send someone with some food? Which one?”

“Lets not waste food and use up the sushi but first let’s go have a look at the vending machines if there’s anything nice.”

We get to the door and Brett is standing in the way,

“Sorry guys I can’t let Kali leave”

“We’re just going to those vending machines” pointing at the vending machine that is just at the end of the corridor, I’m a little bit annoyed now with Brett.

“Sorry Kali.” He gives me a sorry look again but I’m getting more annoyed now.

Pushing Brett is like pushing a wall which now makes me more mad, I feel the anger within me start to build up and with a sudden burst of strength I push him out of the way, Brett has a surprised look on his face, but I’m too angry to be surprised also. I can feel in the pit of my stomach the anger that is rising and growing, standing there and staring at Brett with an intense glare he takes a step back, suddenly Nikki pushes me towards the vending machine,

“Breath Kali. Focus on picking some food.”

Taking a deep breath I focus on looking at the food and what they are, I start to think if it tastes nice, there’s packets of chips and chocolates, oooo chocolate milk drink, I’m eyeing up all the food I want mmm…

“Feeling better girl?”

Nikki purposely got me to think about the food cause I completely forgot about my little anger episode. Feeling bad for the way I pushed Brett.

“Poor Brett. I didn’t mean to.” Looking down the hall in his direction with a frown “I don’t know what came over me but it was strong. How did you know what to do?”

“In our earlier years we try to learn how to keep our emotions in check, it takes years to learn. It’s not easy for us though, we are naturally hot blooded beasts born to kill and protect what is ours.” Nikki explains while looking at the vending machine.

“Lets get some more food for the boys too, they are looking tired too. Ok you get our junk from that one and I’ll take what’s left in this machine.”

Looking at the vending machine they don’t have much great stuff.

“maybe we should have asked someone to bring us some food” I say and we both giggle.

I take what’s left in the vending machine, three cups of noodles, two deli like sandwiches, two cold hotdogs and two chicken wraps.

Walking back with our hands full of food, Nikki’s put some in my sling, giggling at the amount of food we got. Eden pops her head out from one of the rooms to warn us, we automatically go quiet.

Brett opens the door for us to enter, we walk through and tell the boys to join us. Nikki rolls the table to the foot of the bed we start filling up the small table with the food. Brett and Mike leave with some of the food while Nikki pulls up the two chairs. A few minutes later the boys come back with hot noodles and warm hot dogs. We dig in like a weird little family.

“Sorry Brett, I don’t know what came over.” Apologizing for me earlier outburst.

“don’t worry about it. I should be apologizing. Penny can be scary when she’s mad and we try to stay off her bad side.”

“Yeah and she’s crazy strong for a w…. for a woman.” Mike adds onto Brett’s sentence and looking embarrassed with his cover up.

“You mean for a werewolf?” Mike and Brett look at me with surprised eyes and look at Nikki.

“She figured it out on her own.” Nikki saying it in a bored tone.

“You’re not scared of our kind?” Mike curiously asks.

“Should I be? No I’m not. If anything you guys have been kind and also have been protecting me, so I don’t see a reason to be scared. So is Connie and Amber also werewolves?”

“Both are humans and both don't know.” Mike says while eating his hotdog.

"Don't speak with your mouth full."

Nikki slaps his shoulder to remind him about table matters, Brett and I chuckle while Mike puts his fist up pretending to fight Nikki.

For the next hour and a half we chat about Mike and Connie’s relationship, the battles they have been in.

Mike yawns and Brett looks like he too is about to fall off his chair. Poor guys have been here the whole time since I was admitted. I don’t know how they have been sleeping on those chairs, I would have been sore after a few hours.

“Why don’t you guys get some mattresses and bring them here, there’s enough room for two, and you both are still by the door so technically your still doing your job.” I suggest and they both laugh.

“No need for mattresses, we can sleep in our wolf form and now that you know we can finally do that.” Brett looks excited to finally sleep in his wolf form.

We tidy up our little so called dinner table we used tonight and push it over to the bed to get it ready for Nikki’s and I movie with our junk food.

Waiting for the boys to transform, I’m feeling excited and I think it’s showing on my face, like a little girl waiting for an ice cream, they both look at me like they are waiting for me to turn around,

“You don’t want to see this.” Mike suggests I turn around using his index motioning in a circle.

“Yes I do!” still excited and didn’t get what he really meant.

“Ok enjoy the show.” Brett says playfully, they both look at each other and laugh.

Eyes wide open eagerly waiting for it to happen, beyond excited and then… my eyes couldn’t shut any faster when Brett dropped his trousers, they both start laughing and I’m feeling embarrassed and I’m sure I’m blushing cause I can feel my cheeks heating up. A few seconds later Nikki speaks up.

“You can open your eyes now, ‘Miss I want to watch two men strip’, they have transformed.” Nikki teases me while looking at his phone.

I wait for a bit in case Nikki is tricking me. Feeling it’s safe cause I can’t hear anything I open my eyes, their clothes are folded neatly on the chair, I make my way to the end of the bed and there lay two wolves, my breath hitches and I’m just amazed at how beautiful they are and kneel down to pat them like dogs, not knowing who is who, I look at Nikki who is still looking at his phone he describes their wolf colours.

“The Tan and black one is Mike and the Grey and White is Brett. They’re wolves not dogs Kali."

Like a little kid with no ears I continue to pat them, well more Brett than Mike, Mike obviously doesn’t like it and huffed in disagreement when I when to pat him but Brett didn’t mind and wouldn’t do anything. Brett sniffs me and then puts his head back on his front paws and closes his eyes. I join Nikki on the bed.

“Brett said you don’t smell like a human nor a wolf.”
