Chapter 1: The Rain in Lekki

348 Words
The rain started like a whisper, soft enough to make you believe it might stop, but in Lagos, rain rarely keeps promises. Lekki’s streets glistened with neon reflections—streetlights shimmering in puddles, cars leaving streaks of light in their wake. Amina’s umbrella was practically useless, flipping once against the wind before she wrestled it into submission. She cursed under her breath, tugging her scarf tighter. She hated being late, but today was different. Today felt like something was waiting for her. She didn’t know what, and she didn’t want to know yet. She slipped into the cafe tucked in between the new high-rise apartments, its warm lights spilling onto the wet sidewalk like a promise of safety. Jazz played softly in the background, low enough to let whispered conversations float like secrets. Her eyes scanned the room before settling on a man in the corner—a stranger, but not exactly a stranger. His gaze seemed to follow her, though it could have been a trick of the light. He had that calm confidence that made you wonder if he noticed things most people didn’t, like the way her fingers trembled slightly as she held her coffee cup. She ignored him and chose a table by the window, her mind restless. She could feel the city breathing around her: the laughter of street hawkers outside, the distant honk of taxis, the patter of the rain against the glass. And yet, despite the noise, there was silence inside—a kind of silence that waited for something to happen. The man watched her for a moment longer, then looked down at the newspaper in front of him. But the edges of his mouth curled into a half-smile, like he already knew a secret he wasn’t about to share. Amina didn’t notice, of course. She had her own secrets. And Lagos, in its endless chaos, had a way of hiding more than it revealed. Somewhere in the city, a shadow shifted, unnoticed. Somewhere in the shadows, a story was beginning. And it had her name written all over it
