"Alyssa, come help grandma with the garden." I heard my Nana call from the outside. I was laying on my hammock, to enjoy some of this sun and reading one of my books. I looked over at my Nana as she was raking up some of the dirt. It was spring time, the best time to start it up. "Really, Nana. Its the first warm day of the season and you want me to help you." I had whined. "Yes, before it rains today." She said as she looked up at the sky. "Its not gonna rain, there's not even a cloud in the sky." I said as I looked up. "My child, you don't get it do you. I'm from this island, I know when things are gonna happen." She has said. Everyone loved my Nana but sometimes she takes it to too far with her beliefs. Yes, sometimes she is right but sometimes she's not. One year she said the volcano here, in Hawaii, was gonna hit. She told everyone and they were like it hasn't hit in years. So no one was ready for it when it hit. Only us and a few others. We lost some villagers that year because no one had listen to her. "Fine, I'll help you. But once I'm done, I'm going back to what I was doing Nana." I told her. "That's fine, if we get done before it rains." She said smiling at me as I walked over. I chuckled at her old self but loved her. She wasn't that old, she was probably in her 50's. Everyone thinks she's my mother because I'm only 10 years old. I mean we do look alike, because of my father was her son. "Nana, tell me about my father again." I asked her. She knew I loved her stories about my parents. I usually do them as bed time stories but I wanted to pass the time from doing this. "Well, he was the most handsome boy I've ever laid my eyes on when I gave birth to him. He was perfect and I knew once he got older that the ladies would love him. What woman wouldn't love a Hawaiian guy, they had the looks, the smarts, the body, and when I mean body, I'm talking about all the muscles. He was his Father's twin, people would think that his father gave birth to him instead of me." She said as she pulled up some weeds. "Growing up, he had problems with his speech but over time, he grew over it. You remind me of him sometimes, your looks, how you both talk the same way on some words. When I just hear you say those words, I think he's here with us." She has told me as she grabbed my hand. She smiled at me for a moment then moved a piece of my hair behind my ear. Then kept her hand on my cheek. I placed my hand on top of hers and smiled at her. "You have his beautiful hazel green eyes, long black hair, and those cute dimples. You have your mothers lips and nose. Even though I only met her a few times before what happened to her." My nana said as she looked down. Everyone on this island thinks, that poachers had came by our hut and grabbed my motber and killed my father leaving me alone. Every year around that time, they throw a feast, a small gathering for their memory. Everyone loved her, she brought life to this place. She helped the children around the island how to swim when she was in the water. Everyone said she was the islands swim teacher because of how good she swam in the water. They even built a statue of her with a fish tail, for how good of a swimmer she was. They called her a mermaid at times because of that. But we all know that mermaid aren't real. They are just mystic creature's of the folktale stories that boaters tell others. They say that they sing a melody to lure shippers/boaters to them so they can kill them. But I don't believe it one bit. "Lookie there, we're done. And guess what, the sun is still out for a little bit longer." My nana had said. "Good, now I can go back to the sun." I said as I dust off myself. "Actually, I'm gonna head over to the beach for a little bit." "Okay, be back in time for dinner in town." "Yes, nana." I said as I ran over to the best spot on this island that was close for me. I already had my two piece under my sundress just in case I wanted to go. That's basically what we all wear here anyways. We're all always in the water. But me, I'd be there all day long if I wanted to or had my way. It like a drug to me. Like it calls me, to come in the water, but when I get in it nothing happened. It just feels cool to the touch and calms me down. One day I was swimming in the ocean, I went to the Coral pond, where all the beautiful fishes and colorful corals where some of those sea creatures live. As I was waving in the water, some of the fishes were swimming around me. A seahorse swam to my face and poked me on the nose. I smiled at it as I reached out to touch him. At first it felt weird to touch them but it was so cool. Its like I was an sea creature whisper. Like I got what they were thinking or something. When I tell my Nana about it, she would smile for a second then have a worried look on her face. I ask if there something wrong, she would just shrug it off like it was nothing. But it was something, at least to me it was. But I just left it alone and kept the cool things about the water with me. What do y'all think? Is the grandma silly for not telling her just yet or just waiting for right time? Well let's see, stay tune.
