Chapter 1

“I still think you should wear a suit and a tie… a black tie.” Said Amber, Ash's sister, crossing her arms on her chest. Ash looked at his sister through the floor mirror as he was putting his cufflinks on. He was wearing a black jean with a grey button-up shirt, and he believed this outfit was formal enough for the important meeting planned this afternoon. He was going to represent the rogues of Idaho in the peace treaty signing ceremony this afternoon. This is a formal and official ceremony where the Alphas of all neighboring packs will sign a peace treaty ending the ongoing war between packs and rogues in Idaho. “Yeh right. To have him look like a penguin!” huffed Rob, Ash’s best friend and second in command, as he rolled his eyes. Rob has always been rough around the edges and is not in favor for the peace treaty signature. But he respected Ash’s decision and would always stand by his friend, even if it meant going through long hours of talking and mingling with what he despised the most: Alphas of Idaho packs and their pack members. Ariel, Amber’s twin, giggled at Rob’s comment. She knew about Rob’s reservations and even though she did not share his reticence, she was grateful that he will be by her brother’s side during this critical meeting. “I am so proud of you, son.” exclaimed Ash’s mother, her voice cracking and raw emotions blazing in her teary eyes. Ash sighed as he pulled his mother into a tight hug. The past couple of weeks have been an emotional roller-coaster for all of them. And he did not have the luxury to take a step back and digest all the revelations that fell upon them. “Mom, please don’t cry.” He murmured pressing a kissing on the top of her head. She hugged him tighter, wrapping her arms around his waist, as she could not contain her tears anymore. “I cannot…” whispered Mila, his mother. Ash ran his hand on her back to comfort her. His mother did not have an easy life, all thanks to her mate… His father… His r****t and blood-thirsty father: Alpha Alexander. Ash still cannot believe how happy his mother was when she met him after all those years. Him… the product of a r**e. The constant reminder of what her mate did to her. She had to hear that her eldest son turned like her mate and was killed in battle. And her unwanted son, him, was alive and kicking. “Don’t” she scolded him, pulling away from the hug. He frowned and looked at his mother, surprised by her reprimand. “What?” he asked confused. “I know what you are thinking and do not dare go there! You are my child, my blood! And I am lucky to call you MY SON!” rebuked Mila. His mother is an angel, thought Ash as he looked at her lovingly. Not only she took him in, but she also has been acting as a mother for his brother and sisters. Antony, Amber and Ariel do not know who their mothers were. His twin sisters knew that they did not share the same mother with Anthony, but this is the most their father told them. Chances are, that his criminal father kidnapped them just like he did to Ash and his brother Aaron. A lifetime of lies and hatred was smashed into pieces a couple of weeks ago. As far as Ash remembered, his father always told Aaron and him that an Alpha kidnapped and killed their mother. He even sometimes hinted that the former Alpha of Silver Moon, the father of the Carter brothers, helped this r****t Alpha escape prosecution. Their father, an Alpha’s son himself, told them that he was overthrown from his rightful pack by those greedy and criminal Alphas, all conspiring together to protect their mother’s r****t.  This is the story they were fed, day and night. The story of injustice and impunity. They had to train every single day, to become the killing machines their father wanted. He was hard on them, biting them up when they refused to train or when they preferred to hang up with their friends instead of training. Yet, Ash and his brothers never hated their dad, even when he beat them up. Ash being a loving and manipulated son, he always found an excuse for him, mainly the excuse that he is heartbroken by the assassination of his mate. His father’s brainwashing did not only work on his children, but he also managed to rally so many rogues to his supposedly just cause. His father was not only a cold-blooded criminal and a r****t. He was a first-class manipulator as well. He convinced so many rogues that join him and fight against the “real oppressors”: the Idaho packs. Ash still remembered the celebration organized by his father, when they murdered the Alpha of the Silver Moon pack, the father of Liam and Dean. His father was trying to get to him for years now, labelling him as the number one enemy. As the head behind the corruption in the packs… As the man who protected their mother’s murderer. He cannot forget the jubilation on his father’s face. He never saw him so happy. And truth be told, he was happy as well. He thought they brought justice to his mother. Little did he know that all this was a lie. That his father was after the Alpha of Silver Moon for one simple reason: The man provided protection to his mate, shielding her, and sending her far away from his claws. All the rogues fell for his father’s lies. Alpha Alexander was a natural-born leader, and he knew how to talk to the rogues’ fears and how to ignite the flame of hate in their hearts. Especially the younger generation, those who were born rogues because of the crimes of their parents. No one wants to believe that their parents are criminals, and it was easier to believe Alpha Alexander’s lies… To believe that their parents were unfairly banished… and to believe that by attacking those evil packs they would be bringing justice to their parents and freeing the werewolf world from such tyrants. Ash, like everyone else, believed his father’s conspiracy lies. He even admired his father, for devoting all this life to fight the prejudiced pack system. But Ash, unlike his older brother, did not join the fight. At first, he was too young to join and later, at 17 years old, he left Idaho and the rogue life to roam the world. His father and his brother disapproved his decision and insisted for him to fight by their side. His father guilt tripped him for leaving his mother’s death unpunished and even threatened to disown him if he did not drop his “crazy” idea of road trip around the country. But no threat could deter him from fulfilling his dream. He never felt their need for vengeance, nor was he attached to a sedentary life. He needed to discover the world, to move from one place to another. This is how he and his wolf felt the communion with nature… Not by sticking in one place with the rogues or with his siblings. Rob, his best friends since forever, shared this innate desire to travel from one place to another. They spent almost three years on the road, and they loved every minute of it. They made friends in almost every State in the country. Rogue or human, as they never went near any packs knowing how judgmental those packs were against rogues. Ash enjoyed this life on the road, until his younger brother Anthony called him with the devastating news: Aaron’s death. His older brother, Aaron, was committed to avenging his mother. He fell completely for his father’s lies and when their father died, Aaron took up the role of Leader of the Rogues and vowed to continue their father’s battle. Until he lost his morals and resorted to targeting an entire pack, never carrying of collateral damages in his obsession of killing the Carter brothers, the descendants of the Alpha who supposedly protected their mother’s r****t. When Ash came back for the funeral of his brother, the rogues asked him to take the leadership and protect them against the Idaho packs. They told him about the disproportionate use of violence by the Carter brothers when they attacked and freed Alpha Dean’s human girlfriend. They killed every single rogue present there. They told him that the Carter brothers are hunting them down... Every single rogue. And that the lives of his brother and sisters were in danger. He lost one brother and he was not ready to lose anyone else. With a heavy heart, and against his will, he took the leadership role and planned the attacks to avenge his brother’s murder but also to end the Carter brothers once and for all. Anthony, Amber and Ariel, knew how Aaron lost his humanity in the past months. They feared their own brother more than they feared the packs. Their brother became violent, manipulative, and heartless. Anyone who stood in his way was immediately killed. When Anthony tried to talk with him, he beat him to a pulp. They did not know how to tell Ash, that the brother he was mourning was a psychopath… that their brother became worse than their father… They told Rob hoping that he would bring some senses to Ash, but Rob was out for blood just like Ash. Rob lost his brother in the latest fight against the Carter brother, and he wanted vengeance. Ash planned an infiltration in the River Moon pack to kill Alpha Dean’s girlfriend… a life for a life. And he might have lost too many men and women in this battle because the River Moon pack was ready for them. River Moon intercepted the encrypted communication among Rogue members and knew about all the details of the attack. Luckily for Ash, his sisters were too stubborn to let him become a murderer. They failed to convince Aaron that this road was destructive, but they were not going to fail again with Ash. They literary stormed the battlefield and tried to beat some senses into Ash’s head. They did not save the day by convincing their brother. But just by being there, in the middle of a war, Ash had to listen to Alpha Dean’s arguments and had to agree to a meeting and peace negotiation with the Carter brother. He would do anything to protect his sisters and make sure they are not in danger. Ash gave his mother a side-hug as he looked at his sister, chatting and laughing with his closest friends. They are oblivious of how instrumental they were to broking this peace treaty. If his sisters did not join him on the battlefield, he most likely would have continued with the fight until the last drop. He smiled, looking fondly at his sisters when his friend Rob put a hand on his shoulder. “Are you sure about this?” he asked him. “Yes Rob. I trust them. They have uncovered the truth and they revealed our father’s lies. You know that the packs are not at fault here! You saw all the proofs.” “I know. I know. But this does not replace the fact that they treated us like a sub-class… like raging animals with zero rights.” “And this peace treaty guarantees our human rights. They all committed to treat us as equal, even the rightfully banished rogues will have the right to be treated fairly.” “I hate packs Ash. With their ranks and their class-system. They are arrogant and will always look down on us.” “This is not true Rob! Amber and I have been welcomed with open arms in the River Moon pack. Luna Taylor has been anything but kind to us.” Ariel interjected. “Luna Taylor! A human is a luna now!” huffed Rob in disgust. “Weren’t you criticizing the rankism in the packs?” Ash teased his friend. Rob rolled his eyes and lightly squeezed his friend’s shoulder. “You know I would take a bullet for you Ash. I will do as you wish and stand by your side as you sign this peace treaty. But I cannot see myself living in a stupid pack taking orders from an Alpha or a beta!” complained Rob. “Who said you have to join a pack? I am not going to join any pack.” Calmly explained Ash. “What?!” gasped Mila, Ash’s mother. “I will remain a rogue. This is my decision.” Stated Ash.
