Chapter 3: J and J I heard an odd noise. Finally it dawned on me that it was my cell phone. I’d completely forgotten I had the damn thing in my pocket. I hated it actually, plus it was so small I kept losing it. Anyhow it was buzzing or ringing or something, so I pulled it out and pushed a button and snarled, “What?” “Oh honey, you must be really upset at losing your father! John and I are so sorry! Is there anything we can do to help?” It was Joseph. He and John were my best friends, my chosen family as it were, back on Maui. They were a couple of older guys who had been together forever, and had sort of taken me under their wing. They had me over to dinner, introduced me to other single gay guys, and some not so single, too, and picked me up from the airport whenever I had to travel.
