Chapter 25: The Road Less Traveled

1173 Words
Adrian sat at the edge of the street, watching as the day faded into a dimly lit evening. The noise of the city filled the air, the voices of the crowd mixing with the distant hum of vehicles. He had learned to find solace in these fleeting moments of peace amidst the chaos. Life hadn't been easy. In fact, it hadn't been fair. Yet, he kept moving forward, one step at a time, always with the weight of his unknown past heavy on his mind. His world had always been small—small in terms of friends, small in terms of hope, small in terms of what was possible. Raised by a poor, elderly man who had found him abandoned on the streets as an infant, Adrian’s life had always been defined by struggle. The old man, though poor himself, had managed to raise Adrian as his own, teaching him survival skills. He was his only family, and yet, Adrian knew nothing of his real parents. The day Adrian met the old man, life had changed for him. The elderly man, despite his own lack of wealth, took him in without hesitation. Adrian was just a boy back then, his face covered in dirt, his body weak and frail from hunger. The man, with no hesitation, fed him and promised him a better future, even though his own future seemed uncertain. The old man was kind, but their lives were marked by poverty. Adrian had to grow up faster than most children, learning the ways of the world through harsh experiences. School was a battlefield. He was mocked every day for being poor, for being an orphan. The children at school would laugh at his worn-out clothes and second-hand books. "Look at the beggar," they would say, "he's the poorest of them all." But Adrian never let their words break him. He focused on his studies, always trying to be invisible. One day, while he was walking home from school, a letter arrived. It was an acceptance letter for a scholarship at one of the most prestigious universities in the city. Adrian's heart raced as he read the words, his eyes filling with disbelief. It was the opportunity of a lifetime—a chance to break free from his cycle of poverty. But, even with the scholarship, life at the university wasn’t easy. Adrian still lived in a rundown apartment, picking up bottles and doing odd jobs just to survive. The other students could tell he didn’t belong. He didn’t have the flashy clothes, the expensive gadgets, or the charm of the other kids. He didn’t fit in, and they made sure he knew it. But Adrian kept his head down, studying hard, determined not to let his circumstances define his future. One night, as Adrian was walking to his apartment, struggling with the weight of his backpack, he met her—a girl who would change everything. She was standing outside her apartment, holding a phone in one hand, and she looked up as he passed. "Hey, you dropped something," she said, pointing to the ground. Adrian stopped, confused. His hand reached into his pocket to check, but there was nothing missing. "Just kidding," she smiled. "I thought I’d make you stop for a second. What’s your name?" "Adrian," he answered, feeling awkward. "I’m Emily," she said, holding out her hand. "I livestream my daily life. You should check it out sometime." "Livestream?" Adrian asked, unsure of what she meant. "Yeah," she laughed. "I do it for fun, mostly. And I make enough money from it to get by. You could use some help, huh? You look like you're struggling." He hesitated but nodded. "Yeah... just trying to make ends meet." Emily seemed to study him for a moment. "Here, take this," she said, reaching into her pocket and handing him a few bills. "This should help with your rent. Don’t worry about it. Just think of it as a little favor." Adrian couldn’t believe it. He hadn’t expected this, and for a moment, he felt a strange warmth in his chest. It wasn’t much, but it was something he desperately needed. "Thank you," he said, still stunned. "Anytime, Adrian. You’ve got to survive, right?" Emily smiled and walked back into her apartment. The next few weeks were a blur of classes, mockery, and survival. Adrian continued to pick up bottles, sell items, and do whatever it took to survive. At the university, there was a boy named Victor, whose family was worth billions. Victor had a way of looking down at Adrian, especially when the two crossed paths. He’d laugh as Adrian struggled, his arrogant smile as bright as his perfectly pressed suit. “You think you belong here?” Victor taunted one day, after Adrian had dropped a few books in the hallway. “This place is for people like me. People with money. You’re just a charity case.” Adrian, despite the anger burning inside him, stayed quiet. He refused to show weakness. But that day, something inside him clicked. He had enough. No one would dictate his life anymore. The next day, Adrian was walking through campus when an unexpected event took place. A mysterious man approached him—a man whose face was hidden beneath a hood. The man handed Adrian a letter, a letter that would change everything. “It’s your inheritance,” the man said. “It’s time for you to claim what’s rightfully yours.” Adrian stared at the envelope, disbelief sweeping over him. He had heard of inheritance scams, but this felt different. The man disappeared into the crowd before Adrian could even ask a single question. Still, Adrian couldn’t believe it. Inheritance? Him? It seemed like a cruel joke. What could he possibly inherit? He had nothing but his worn-out clothes and a lifetime of poverty. That night, the old man he had grown up with sat him down. "Adrian, there's something I need to tell you," the old man said, his voice trembling. "You were never just an orphan. You were born into something far greater. Your real parents... they were part of a powerful family. I kept this secret for years, but it's time you know the truth." Adrian’s world was shaking as he tried to process this information. His entire life had been a lie. The boy who had always been mocked, the boy who had always struggled, had an inheritance waiting for him? It seemed impossible. But, despite everything, Adrian decided to stay the same. He wasn’t going to let the inheritance define him. He would remain the ordinary student, the boy from the streets, and face the challenges ahead as his own person. Little did he know, the inheritance would lead him into a world filled with power struggles, underground networks, and a dangerous destiny that would soon claim him as its own. And so, as Adrian faced another day at university, his life was about to take a turn he couldn’t even begin to imagine. ---
