17 Making it through the morning was agony. I considered calling Maggie just to ask her my questions, but I didn’t actually have her number and I couldn’t leave Sage short-handed. Still, being around the plants had given me a chance to see if I could work through the stress-induced blockage as Tania had dubbed it. I started with the more mature plants. They didn’t need as much coaxing so it shouldn’t have been a big deal to get them to grow. I sat beneath one of the halogen lights and pressed my fingertips to the stem of the smallest of the plants. It was still larger than the seedling I’d been working on earlier in the week. “I know things have been wonky lately, but I really need to know I can do this. So, if you could just grow a little, I’d really appreciate it,” I told the plant.
