7 Maggie had insisted we stay for dinner. By the time we’d finished, it was late enough she’d then told us to stay the night. Sleep had eluded me though, despite the comfortable bed and the soothing cup of tea from Maggie that I was almost certain carried some hint of magic in it. I tossed and turned, seeing Vera’s blank gaze staring up at me every time I shut my eyes. By six in the morning, I’d given up trying and crept into the living room and the attached kitchen, rooting around for some coffee. “Couldn’t sleep?” Maggie’s voice carried from the couch.
