As the last slide in her PowerPoint presentation faded, Dr. Janis Fielding hit the conference room light switch and looked at the visitors for reaction. Jerry Goodall, the hard-nosed former Director of the FBI who now headed the Department of Homeland Security, was hard to read. He merely nodded and reached for a pen to make notes in his briefing folder. Dr. Joe Jerardi, the president’s science advisor, had a more discernible reaction. He looked stunned.
