Chapter 2

As the bus pulls up to my house I start to shake, nervous about this talk my parents need to have with me. I play the events of the day in my head and wonder if I should tell them what happened at school. I wonder if it has something to do with “the talk”. Does Mr. Coolly know something about me that I don’t? The way he spoke was very cryptic. I open my front door and find my parents sitting at the dining table, they look worried. “Nadia you’re home. Come on in sweetie and have a seat.” My mother greets me. I put my things down on the bench next to the front door and walk into the dining room and take a seat across from my parents. “What is going on Mom? You look worried.” My mother takes a deep breath before she speaks. “Well, sweetie we have something we need to tell you. Now that you are 16 you may start to notice some changes in yourself.” “Oh, Mom not the birds and bees story we’ve had that talk already remember!” I say jokingly hoping to lighten the mood in the room. “No this isn’t that talk dear” my Dad interjects. “This talk is about your Mother and I and well now you”. “What are you guys talking about? Just spit it out already, I’ve had a very weird day and would like to just relax”. “Nadia, I am a witch and your Father is, well he is a vampire” my Mom spits out. “WHAT?” I scream, “What on earth are you talking about, there is no such thing, right?” My head is really spinning now. What are they even saying, this can't be right. “So what does that make me?” I ask fearing the answer. “Well, you are a hybrid, both vampire and witch. When your Mother was pregnant we weren’t sure if you would be a vampire or witch, most of the time in interspecies relationships you are one or the other.” My Dad explains. “But we have known since you were very young that you were both. When you were a toddler you could talk with animals and manipulate the elements.” My Mom explains. “Yes that is correct and all vampires born in our family are born with a mark that shows our lineage.” My Dad adds. “You mean my birthmark? And what do you mean by lineage?” I feel confused. “Well, you see Nadia my family is a descendant from one of the original vampire families of New Zealand. My family is one of hierarchy, held to almost a royal-like capacity. Until I met your mother we were also known as purebloods.” My father’s face turns sad when he mentions that last part. “So we are like royalty? But then why do you look so sad, Dad?” “Because back in our time when your mother and I met interspecies relationships were frowned upon, and in my family plain forbidden. My father always believed in the pure bloodline, just as his Father did and so on.” My father pauses to compose himself. “But I fell in love with your Mother. I tried to get my Father to understand but he wouldn’t wavier. He gave me a choice, my one true love or being part of his family and rights to his lineage.” He wipes his eyes and sighs. “So my grandparents aren’t dead? You told me when I was young they died before I was born. Well I mean I guess it wasn’t really a lie right.” I chuckle trying to make my dad smile and relieve some of my anxiety. From the look on my Father’s face, my attempt to make him laugh failed. “I’m sorry Dad, I was just trying to lighten the mood and make you smile.” “I know pumpkin, it’s just a difficult subject for me. I love my family but I love your Mother more and would choose her always. I just wish things were different and my parents could grow and adapt to this ever-changing world.” “Why did you wait until now to tell me this?” “Because Heretics do not start to come into their full powers until their 16th birthday,” Mom explains. “Her-e-what now? What is that?” I ask confused. “A Heretic is what we call a hybrid that is both witch and vampire. You are a Heretic Nadia. And soon your vampire and witch powers will become stronger and you will notice them more.” My mother explains. “That explains gym class today then I guess.” I blurt out without thinking. “What do you mean Nadia? What happened at school today?” My Father asks panically. “Well today was the fitness test in gym class. Well I passed every test and even got the highest scores of everyone, not just my class, but the whole school. I didn’t even break a sweat or feel tired. And during the quarter-mile run, I ran with such super speed that it felt like I didn’t move at all. I got taken to the headmaster’s office afterward and he told me that some classmates just saw a blur when I took off and that I should talk with you guys, then come see him again in the morning before class.” “Oh Nadia we should have talked to you this morning. We are so sorry. We didn’t think a normal day at school would bring out any of your powers, until we could get the chance to explain all this to you.” My Mother says. “So what happens now? Do I have to quit school? How many more different powers will I have and how powerful will I be? Oh god, do we have to move now?” I start rambling question after question, nervously and a little afraid. “Whoa whoa, Nadia calm down, take a deep breath. You don’t have to quit school, we aren’t moving anywhere. As for how many different powers you will have and how powerful you will be, we don’t know yet.” My Mother says calmly. “We chose Crest Academy because of its varied demographics.” “What do you mean Mom? Are there others like me at my school?” The thought that there might be others like me makes me feel a little better and like I’m not alone. “Well, not like you exactly because Heretics are rare, but yes. Crest Academy has many different species that make up the student body and even some of the staff. Humans, vampires, witches, werewolves, etc. The supernatural population knows about each other while the human population does not know about the supernatural population.” My mother explains. “Werewolves? And what do you mean etc? Are there more species than just vampires, witches, humans, and werewolves? How do the supernatural ones know about each other? If we are all in the same school how do the humans not know about the supernatural?” I ask. “Yes, there are so many different species apart from us and werewolves. We will tell you all that we know as we go. It will take way more time to explain than we have tonight. Supernatural beings have a sixth sense that can detect other supernatural beings. So we know when we come across other beings. You will learn to identify others in time. Humans do not know of our existence for many reasons. One main reason being they fear that which they do not understand. There are a few humans that know, but those are usually mated to a supernatural.” My father explains. “We know you still have many questions and there is still much to discuss, but it is almost time for your guest to start arriving.” My mother interjects. “We will pick this back up tomorrow, we will do our best to answer any questions you have. Your Father and I are here for you, and we will get through this together sweetie.” “OK Mom, thank you both I love you.” We start setting up for the party, Mom lays out the food while Dad decorates the house. I go up to my room and change into the party clothes I had laid out the night before. I feel a little better after the talk with Mom and Dad, but I am nervous that my powers could manifest at any given time. The doorbell rings, and the first guest has arrived and shake back my nerves and head downstairs to answer the door.
