Her past showing up

808 Words
*Kate* The streets are quiet as I navigate the dimly lit alley, cradling Mirabella against my chest in a soft carrier. Her tiny body is warm and content, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing around us. I can’t help but glance around nervously, I hate lying to Sam, but luckily he has a meeting so I did not need to really lie, just refrain from telling him. Rex is waiting for me, and I can’t afford to be late. As I reach the designated spot… a secluded corner behind an old café… I spot Rex leaning against the brick wall, his arms crossed and an inscrutable look on his face. He’s a formidable figure, exuding authority and experience, a weird mix of a boss and a father figure. I swallow hard, feeling the anxiety bubble within me. “Kate,” he greets me, his voice low and serious. “You brought the baby.” I nod, adjusting the carrier so I can peek at my daughter’s sleeping face. “Of course. She still needs me too often to really leave her, and her father Was not at home.” Rex’s expression softens for a brief moment, but it quickly hardens again. “You need to listen to me. You’re in danger… great danger.” My heart races, and I feel the weight of his words settle in my chest. “What do you mean?” I ask, trying to keep my voice steady. “I am out now, I am no longer involved.” “Your last assignment… they know who you are. They know where you live. You can’t underestimate them,” he warns, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that sends chills down my spine. “Are you talking about Sam?” I ask, incredulous. “He doesn’t know anything about my past, I am sure… and even if he did, he wouldn’t be a danger to me.” “No,” Rex replies, shaking his head. “The main target of the case. They are resourceful and dangerous. I fear they might not be willing to just going let you walk away.” Swallowing all I can do is shake my head. “You can start over. I can help you disappear,” Rex says. “Make sure they can’t find you.” I take a step back, suddenly feeling the weight of the world crash down around me. “But I’m out of the game now,” I protest, my voice trembling slightly. “I’m a mom and a wife. I can’t just disappear.” Rex steps closer, lowering his voice as if the walls have ears. “You can take the baby with you.” “But not Sam,” I insist, a lump forming in my throat. “I can’t leave him. He’s my partner, my rock. He deserves to know what’s going on.” “It would be too risky,” Rex counters, his expression hardening again. “He’s famous; people will recognize him. If they find out where you are, they’ll come after both of you. You need to think about your safety… their safety.” I shake my head again, disbelief swirling within me. “No. I can handle this. They’ll leave us alone. They have to see that I’m out of everything, that I am no threat.” Rex narrows his eyes, concern etched on his face. “I doubt it, Kate. You’re still a target, and they won’t let you go so easily. Just promise me that if it gets too dangerous, you’ll call. You can’t be too careful.” I look down at Mirabella, her tiny fingers wrapped around my thumb, and my heart aches. “I will protect her. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe. I can’t let this past come back to haunt us.” Rex nods, but I can see the worry in his eyes. “Just remember, you can’t always do it alone. You have to make the right choices for her.” I take a deep breath, steeling myself. “I appreciate your help, Rex, but I won’t run. I can handle this. I will make it work.” As I turn to leave, a wave of determination washes over me. I have a family now, and I will protect them at all costs. I may have a past that haunts me, but I am not that person anymore. I am a mother, and I will fight tooth and nail for my daughter and my husband. As I walk away from Rex, my heart pounds as I tell myself they will leave me alone. Mirabella and Sam are my world, and there is no way I will let anyone take that away from us. No matter what I have to do, I will keep them safe.
