Chapter 3: Missing“After Caleb died, I sat here a lot, staring out the window. The landscaping is different now. On a day like today, nothing prettier than pine trees flocked with snow. Our father didn’t want much out front. It would just have been more to maintain. Crops were enough.” “Just the three of you handled the entire farm?” I wondered. “We had seasonal help. Caleb was good with them, not like our father, who behaved like a plantation owner and these were his slaves. Every hope had been pinned on him that he’d one day take over the farm and I would fall into line as some sort of cohort. He was going to follow through, unquestionably, with our father’s plans.
