Chapter 12: The Lock

744 Words
Sundown was still hours away. The cabin felt too small with Varga’s words in it. “The Hollow doesn’t start wars unless the lock has been turned.” Sarah was picking at the food Mara left. Bread. Dried meat. Didn’t eat any of it. I was watching the fire. Or watching her watch the fire. Finally she broke. “What lock, Ryan?” I dragged a hand down my face. “I don’t know.” “Liar.” I looked up. “What?” “You know something.” She set the plate down. “Through the bond. I felt it when he said it. You went cold.” Damn. She was right. I stood and paced. The cabin was 10 steps wide. Not enough. “My father,” I said. Voice low. “There was a room. In the Crescent Pack basement. Locked. Iron door. No one was allowed in. Not even me.” Sarah frowned. “You never told me.” “Because I didn’t think it mattered.” I stopped. “He called it the Vault. Said it held ‘pack history.’ But the wards on it... they weren’t Crescent magic. They were older.” “The night we ran,” Sarah whispered. “Did we...?” “I don’t know.” My throat was dry. “We came through the tunnels. The ones I used to sneak out of. The tunnel entrance was right next to the Vault.” The mark on my throat ached. Not pain. Memory. “What if we did something?” Sarah stood too. Came to me. “What if running set it off?” “Then we’re screwed.” I laughed, but it wasn’t funny. “Varga thinks we opened a door. And if we did, then the Hollow coming after us makes sense.” She was quiet. Then: “My grandma had a story. About a lock with two keys.” I turned to her. “What?” “Two wolves. Marked by a broken moon. One key of blood. One key of choice.” She looked at me. “She said when both turn, the door opens. And what’s on the other side either ends the world... or saves it.” Blood. Choice. Me. Her. “Choice," I repeated. “You chose to come with me.” “And you chose to protect me instead of turning me in.” Her voice cracked. “Ryan. What if that’s it? What if we’re the keys?” I pulled her to me before I could think. Arms around her. Forehead to hers. “I didn’t choose the mark,” I whispered. “But I choose you. Every time.” She made a sound. Half sob, half laugh. Buried her face in my chest. For a second the “lock” didn’t matter. The Hollow didn’t matter. Just her heartbeat against mine. And the bond, steady and warm for the first time since this started. Then the door opened. Mara. “Sundown.” We broke apart. Sarah wiped her eyes fast. I squeezed her hand once. Outside, the sky was bleeding red. Gray Ridge looked like a battlefield waiting to happen. Varga was waiting in the war tent. Maps on the table. Weapons. And in the center: A piece of black stone. Jagged. Smoking. With a crescent carved into it. Broken. Varga didn’t look up when we entered. “You were right to talk,” he said. “Because I dug this out of the north ridge. Where the first bodies were.” He finally met my eyes. “This isn’t Gray Ridge stone. It’s not Crescent either.” He tapped the broken crescent. “This is from the Vault.” The air left the room. “Whatever door you opened in Crescent territory...” Varga picked up the stone. “It’s already bleeding into mine.” He threw the stone at my feet. It cracked. And from inside it, a sound. A whisper. Too many voices. “The key turns. The lock breaks. The Hollow feeds.” Sarah grabbed my arm. Varga drew his blade. “So. Tell me, Marked. Are you going to help me close it... or are you going to watch my people die?”
