Chapter 3: The Proposal Twist

1036 Words
The resort’s lounge buzzed with quiet conversations, but for Alina, the world seemed to move in slow motion. She stared at Adrian, the man who had just made Jake walk away with nothing more than a few sharp words. His calm confidence was unsettling yet oddly comforting, like he was someone who always got what he wanted. “What now?” Alina asked, her voice tinged with uncertainty. Adrian leaned against the bar, his gray eyes glinting with amusement. “That depends on you. Do you want Jake to leave you alone for good, or do you want him to regret losing you every single day?” Alina frowned, unsure how to respond. She had spent so long imagining a life with Jake that the thought of moving on felt surreal. But the memory of him with that other woman still burned in her mind, and Adrian’s words ignited something inside her—a desire to take control of the situation instead of letting it control her. “What exactly are you suggesting?” she asked cautiously. Adrian’s smirk deepened. “Something bold. Something he’ll never forget.” Before Alina could press him for details, the sound of Jake’s voice cut through the air. “Alina, we need to talk.” She turned to see Jake striding toward them, his expression a mix of anger and desperation. His sudden reappearance sent her pulse racing, but she refused to let him see her panic. “There’s nothing left to talk about,” Alina said firmly. “Don’t do this,” Jake pleaded, ignoring Adrian entirely. “You’re just upset. We can fix this.” Adrian straightened, stepping between them with a casual yet commanding presence. “She said no,” he said, his tone low and dangerous. Jake’s gaze snapped to Adrian, and for a moment, the tension was palpable. “Stay out of this,” Jake growled. Adrian tilted his head, his expression calm but deadly. “I’m afraid that’s not an option. Alina’s with me now.” Jake scoffed. “Oh, please. This is just a game to you, isn’t it? You don’t care about her.” Adrian’s jaw tightened, his voice dropping even lower. “You have no idea what I care about.” Alina, sensing the situation escalating, stepped forward. “Enough,” she said, her voice sharp. She looked directly at Jake. “You don’t get to act like the victim here. You lied to me, you cheated, and now you think you can just waltz back and fix everything? That’s not how this works.” Jake opened his mouth to argue, but Alina cut him off. “I’m done with you, Jake. And to prove it...” Her eyes darted to Adrian, and before she could second-guess herself, she grabbed his hand. “I’m moving on.” Jake blinked, confused. “What are you talking about?” Alina turned to Adrian, her heart pounding. “Let’s give him something to really talk about.” Adrian raised an eyebrow, his expression unreadable. “Are you sure?” “Absolutely,” she said, her voice steady despite the chaos swirling inside her. Without another word, Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek silver ring—a simple yet elegant band that somehow felt like it belonged in this moment. He held it up for a brief second, his gaze locking with Alina’s, as if silently asking for confirmation. When she nodded, Adrian slipped the ring onto her finger, his touch firm yet gentle. “There,” he said, his voice low and intimate. “Now it’s official.” Jake stared at them, his face a mask of disbelief and anger. “You can’t be serious,” he said, his voice rising. “You just met him!” Alina lifted her chin, her newfound resolve giving her strength. “That’s none of your business anymore.” Adrian stepped closer to her, his arm slipping around her waist. The possessive gesture sent a clear message to Jake, whose fists clenched at his sides. “This isn’t over,” Jake muttered, his voice trembling with barely restrained rage. “Oh, it is,” Adrian said, his tone final. “Walk away while you still can.” For a moment, it seemed like Jake might lash out, but then he turned on his heel and stormed out of the lounge. The silence that followed was deafening. Alina’s breath came in short bursts as she tried to process what had just happened. She looked down at the ring on her finger, the reality of her impulsive decision sinking in. “Did we just...?” she began, her voice trailing off. “Get engaged?” Adrian finished for her, a teasing smile playing on his lips. “It would seem so.” “This is insane,” Alina muttered, shaking her head. “Insane, yes,” Adrian agreed. “But effective.” She glanced at him, her emotions a whirlwind of confusion, gratitude, and curiosity. “Why are you helping me?” Adrian’s smile faded, and for the first time, his expression turned serious. “Let’s just say I don’t like people like Jake. And maybe I see potential in you.” “Potential?” she echoed, unsure whether to feel flattered or skeptical. “Potential to be more than someone’s second choice,” Adrian said, his gaze steady. “But that’s up to you.” Alina swallowed hard, unsure what to make of his cryptic words. She had no idea what she had just gotten herself into, but one thing was certain: her life had taken a turn she never could have anticipated. As they left the lounge together, whispers followed them, the sight of the enigmatic Adrian Knight with a new fiancée fueling gossip among the resort’s guests. But Alina barely noticed. All she could think about was the weight of the ring on her finger and the man at her side who had turned her world upside down in a single night. And as Adrian’s hand brushed against hers, a shiver ran down her spine. Was this the beginning of something extraordinary—or the start of a whole new kind of chaos?
