Chapter 1: Shattered Dreams

1236 Words
The air was thick with the scent of roses and the faint hum of chatter from nearby couples as Alina Carter leaned against the balcony of the oceanfront resort. A gentle breeze swept through her dark hair, carrying her dreams of a perfect future. She glanced at the small velvet box in her hand, her heart racing at the thought of what she was about to do. Tonight was supposed to be the night. The night she would ask Jake, her boyfriend of three years, to marry her. She had planned every detail of their Valentine's Day getaway with precision. The exclusive seaside resort, the candlelit dinner on the beach, and the words she had rehearsed a hundred times. Jake had always been the love of her life—or so she thought. “Alina, are you coming?” Jake’s voice called from inside their suite, pulling her out of her thoughts. “Yes!” she responded, tucking the box into her bag. Her heart fluttered with anticipation as she stepped back inside. Jake stood by the window, adjusting his cufflinks. He looked as polished as ever, his blond hair perfectly styled and his suit tailored to perfection. But something felt...off. “You look stunning,” Jake said with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. Alina smoothed the fabric of her red evening gown and forced a smile. “Thanks. You ready for dinner?” Jake nodded, but his distracted demeanor made her stomach twist. Lately, he’d been distant—late-night phone calls he dismissed as work, texts he quickly hid, and an unusual coldness that made her question if she’d done something wrong. But tonight, she was determined to brush aside her doubts. The restaurant was breathtaking, with tables set up on the sand under a canopy of fairy lights. The waves crashed gently in the background as they were seated at a private table. Alina sipped her wine, trying to steady her nerves as she imagined Jake’s reaction to her proposal. “So,” she began, “how’s work? You’ve been really busy lately.” Jake’s jaw tightened, and he looked away. “Yeah, it’s been hectic. Deadlines and all that.” Alina nodded, sensing his reluctance to elaborate. She decided to change the subject. “I hope tonight helps you unwind. You’ve been working so hard.” Jake’s phone buzzed on the table, and he quickly turned it face down. “It’s nothing,” he said, but Alina caught the way his shoulders tensed. Her heart sank. The nagging doubts she’d been trying to suppress threatened to surface, but she pushed them back. Tonight was about their future, not her insecurities. As the waiter brought their dessert—a decadent chocolate mousse with a heart-shaped garnish—Alina decided it was time. Her fingers brushed the velvet box in her bag, and she took a deep breath. “Jake,” she began, her voice trembling slightly. “I—” Her words were cut short by the sudden ringing of Jake’s phone. He glanced at the screen, his expression shifting from annoyance to something more nervous. “Sorry, I need to take this,” he muttered, standing up and walking away before she could respond. Alina watched him disappear into the shadows, her chest tightening. Minutes passed, and Jake didn’t return. The romantic glow of the evening began to dim, replaced by a creeping sense of unease. Unable to sit still, she stood and followed the direction he had gone. As she rounded the corner of the resort, the sound of hushed voices stopped her in her tracks. “I told you I’d handle it,” Jake’s voice hissed. “You’ve been saying that for weeks,” a woman replied, her tone sharp. Alina’s heart pounded as she stepped closer, peering around the corner. What she saw made her blood run cold. Jake stood with his arms around a petite brunette, her hands resting on his chest. Their faces were inches apart, and the intimacy of their body language left no room for doubt. “You said you were going to break up with her,” the woman said. “I will,” Jake replied. “Just give me more time.” Alina’s breath hitched, and they turned toward the sound. Jake’s eyes widened as he saw her standing there, her expression a mixture of shock and heartbreak. “Alina, this isn’t what it looks like,” he stammered, stepping away from the woman. “Save it,” Alina snapped, her voice trembling with anger. “I heard everything.” “Listen, I can explain—” “Explain?” she interrupted, her voice rising. “You’ve been lying to me for who knows how long, and you think there’s an explanation?” Jake reached out to her, but she recoiled. “Don’t touch me.” The brunette smirked, clearly unbothered by the scene. “Guess the cat’s out of the bag,” she said. Alina’s gaze darted between the two of them, her heartbreak quickly giving way to fury. “You know what? You’re perfect for each other. Congratulations.” Without waiting for a response, she turned and stormed off, tears stinging her eyes. The romantic evening she had envisioned was in ruins, and the man she thought she knew had betrayed her in the worst possible way. --- Back in the resort’s bar, Alina ordered a drink, trying to numb the pain. She didn’t notice the tall, dark-haired man watching her from across the room. Adrian Knight had seen enough of Jake’s antics to know trouble when he saw it. When Alina finally looked up, their eyes met. Adrian raised an eyebrow, his expression unreadable. He walked over, his presence commanding and magnetic. “You look like someone who’s had a rough night,” he said, his deep voice smooth and confident. Alina let out a bitter laugh. “That’s putting it mildly.” Adrian nodded toward the bartender. “Two whiskeys,” he ordered. Then, turning back to Alina, he added, “You don’t strike me as the kind of woman who lets people walk all over her.” Her eyes narrowed. “And what makes you think you know anything about me?” “Call it an observation,” Adrian replied, his gaze steady. “You’re too strong to let some i***t ruin your night.” Alina tilted her head, studying him. “Who are you, anyway?” “Adrian Knight,” he said, extending a hand. “Your boyfriend’s boss.” Her eyes widened in recognition. She had heard Jake complain about Adrian before—about how demanding and intimidating he was. Now, standing this close to him, she understood why. Adrian exuded power and control, and his sharp features and piercing gray eyes only added to his intimidating aura. “Alina Carter,” she said, shaking his hand. Adrian smirked. “Well, Alina, if you’re going to confront Jake again, I suggest doing it with a little more flair. Nothing gets under a man’s skin like seeing what he’s lost.” His words sparked something in her—a daring idea she hadn’t considered. If Jake wanted to play games, she could play, too. As Adrian handed her a glass of whiskey, she raised it in a silent toast. “To new beginnings,” she said. Adrian’s smirk deepened. “To making them count.”
