CHAPTER 55
ANGELA
Damian reached the door.
I stayed where I was, watching him.
He didn't open it immediately.
Instead, he looked through the peephole.
His expression hardened.
“Who is it?” he asked.
No answer.
He waited a few seconds.
Then the person outside knocked again.
Damian's jaw tightened.
He looked back at me.
“Stay behind me.”
Something about his voice made me obey without questioning it.
He unlocked the door but kept the chain in place before opening it slightly.
A man stood outside.
I couldn't see his face clearly from where I was standing.
Damian's voice became cold.
“What do you want?”
The man looked past him.
“I'm looking for Angela Williams.”
Damian's eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
“I have something for her.”
“What?”
“A message.”
My stomach dropped.
Damian glanced at me.
I immediately shook my head.
I didn't know the man.
Or at least, I didn't recognize his voice.
Damian looked back at him.
“You can give the message to me.”
The man hesitated.
Then he reached into his jacket.
Damian's entire body tensed.
“Take your hand out slowly.”
The man froze.
Then he pulled out a small white envelope.
“It's just a letter.”
Damian didn't move.
“Put it on the floor.”
The man slowly bent down and placed the envelope outside the door.
Then he stood again.
“Tell Angela she needs to read it.”
Damian's expression remained cold.
“Who sent you?”
The man didn't answer.
He turned and walked away.
Damian watched him until he disappeared down the hallway.
Then he closed and locked the door.
I was still standing there.
He picked up the envelope.
My name was written across the front.
Angela Williams.
My hands went cold.
Damian looked at me.
“You know what this is?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
He walked toward me.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
He studied my face.
I could feel my heart pounding.
He handed me the envelope.
“Open it.”
I stared at it.
I didn't want to.
Every part of me was screaming not to.
But Damian was standing beside me now.
I couldn't explain why, but having him there made me feel like I could breathe.
I carefully opened the envelope.
There was only one piece of paper inside.
I unfolded it.
Three words were written in black ink.
You were warned.
My breath caught.
Damian took the paper from my hand.
His eyes moved across the words.
The room went silent.
Then he looked at me.
“Angela.”
I couldn't speak.
His expression changed.
“What exactly is going on?”
I stared at him.
This was the question I'd been trying to avoid.
The question I knew would eventually come.
And now Damian was standing in my apartment, holding proof that someone had been threatening me.
I swallowed.
“I don't know.”
His eyes hardened.
“Don't lie to me.”
I flinched.
“I’m not.”
He stepped closer.
“Someone is threatening you.”
I looked away.
“Damian…”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
“How long?”
I couldn't answer.
His voice became quieter.
“Angela, how long has this been happening?”
My eyes filled with tears.
I wanted to tell him.
I wanted to finally stop carrying this alone.
But fear held the words inside my throat.
“Please.”
His expression softened slightly.
“Please what?”
“Don't ask me tonight.”
He stared at me for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
“Fine.”
I looked at him in surprise.
“But I'm not dropping this,” he added.
He folded the paper and placed it on the table.
“Whatever this is, it's over.”
I shook my head.
“You don't understand.”
“No.”
His eyes locked onto mine.
“I don't.”
He stepped closer.
“So explain it to me.”
I couldn't.
Not yet.
Damian reached for my hand.
This time, I didn't pull away.
His fingers closed around mine.
“Whatever you're afraid of,” he said quietly, “it doesn't get to decide whether you have to face it alone.”
I looked down at our joined hands.
And the guilt returned.
Because he was standing beside me without knowing the whole truth.
And somehow, that made me feel even worse.
