CHAPTER 17
HIS POV
I was already in the office when Angela arrived.
Ten minutes early.
Of course she was.
I watched her through the glass wall as she spoke to my assistant. She had a folder tucked under her arm and that same serious expression she always wore when she was working.
She looked like she had somewhere better to be.
I almost smiled.
She probably did.
My assistant knocked on the door.
“She’s here.”
“Send her in.”
A few seconds later, the door opened.
“Good morning.”
“Morning.”
She walked in and placed the folder on my desk.
“I brought the revised documents.”
I picked them up.
“You made the changes I suggested.”
“Most of them.”
I looked up.
“Most?”
“I disagreed with two.”
There it was.
I leaned back in my chair.
“Which two?”
She pulled out a chair and sat.
We went through them.
She explained her reasoning without trying to impress me. When I disagreed, she argued her point. When I made a better one, she admitted it.
I liked that.
More than I should.
After nearly an hour, I closed the folder.
“You were right about the second point.”
Her eyebrows lifted.
“You're admitting that?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“I didn't think men like you admitted when they're wrong.”
“Men like me?”
She shrugged.
“Powerful men.”
“I don't know what other powerful men you've met.”
“Enough.”
I studied her for a moment.
There was clearly a story behind that answer.
I wanted to ask.
I didn't.
Not yet.
She glanced at her watch.
“I should go.”
“You're always in a hurry.”
“I have another meeting.”
“With who?”
The question came out before I could stop it.
She looked at me.
“Why?”
I didn't answer immediately.
“Business.”
She smiled slightly.
“Daniel.”
My jaw tightened before I could hide it.
“Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“You're working with him?”
“No. We're having lunch.”
I said nothing.
She seemed to notice my expression.
“Is there a problem?”
“No.”
It was a lie.
I didn't like the idea of another man taking her to lunch.
I didn't like it at all.
But I had no right to say anything.
Not yet.
Angela stood.
“I'll send the remaining documents tonight.”
“Fine.”
She reached the door.
“Angela.”
She turned.
“Be careful.”
Her expression changed.
“Of Daniel?”
I nodded.
“Why?”
I considered my answer.
“Just be careful.”
She stared at me for a few seconds before giving a small nod.
“Okay.”
Then she left.
I remained in my chair.
I didn't move.
My assistant entered a few minutes later.
He took one look at me.
“Sir?”
“What?”
“You look annoyed.”
“I am.”
“Daniel?”
I looked at him.
He immediately understood.
“Yes, sir.”
“Find out where they're having lunch.”
He hesitated.
“Sir…”
I raised an eyebrow.
He sighed.
“Understood.”
I turned back toward the window.
I knew I was crossing a line.
The problem was...
I wasn't sure I cared.
