CHAPTER 51
ANGELA
I didn't move.
I stood several feet away from the door, staring at it.
Another knock came.
Knock. Knock.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Who is it?”
Silence.
I took a cautious step forward.
“Who?”
Still nothing.
I looked around the room.
My eyes landed on my phone.
Benedicta.
I quickly picked it up and typed.
Me: Someone is at my door.
The reply came almost instantly.
Benedicta: Who?
Me: I don't know.
She called.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?”
“Angela, don't open the door.”
“I wasn't planning to.”
“Can you see who it is?”
“No.”
“Stay away from the door.”
I swallowed.
“Okay.”
Then there was another knock.
This time, it was louder.
I flinched.
“Benedicta…”
“I'm here. Stay on the phone with me.”
I nodded even though she couldn't see me.
“Okay.”
We both stayed silent.
Then I heard a man's voice from outside.
“Angela?”
My entire body froze.
I knew that voice.
My heart suddenly slowed.
“Who is it?” Benedicta whispered through the phone.
I didn't answer.
Because I was trying to understand why he was here.
The voice came again.
“Angela, it's me.”
I finally breathed.
“Damian?”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
Relief rushed through me so quickly that my knees almost weakened.
Benedicta heard me say his name.
“Damian?”
“Yes.”
“Are you sure?”
I nodded.
“He's here.”
She sighed loudly.
“Okay. But don't just open the door without checking.”
I walked closer and looked through the peephole.
Damian was standing outside.
His hands were in his pockets.
He looked calm.
But there was something different about his expression.
I unlocked the door.
The moment I opened it, his eyes moved over my face.
“You look scared.”
“I didn't know it was you.”
“I called you.”
I looked at my phone.
There were two missed calls.
“I didn't hear it.”
His expression softened.
“Are you okay?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
He studied me for another second.
“You're lying.”
I looked away.
“I'm fine.”
He stepped closer.
“Angela.”
“I'm okay.”
He didn't argue.
Instead, he reached out and gently touched my cheek.
“You're shaking.”
I hadn't even noticed.
I swallowed.
“What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to see you.”
“Tonight?”
“Yes.”
He paused.
“And I wanted to check on you.”
My heart tightened.
“Why?”
“Because you've been distant since yesterday.”
I looked down.
Guilt immediately returned.
He noticed my silence.
“Did I do something?”
“No.”
“Then why are you avoiding me?”
“I’m not avoiding you.”
“You are.”
I couldn't look at him.
Because if I did, I was afraid he'd see everything.
The fear.
The guilt.
The uncertainty.
Everything I had been trying to hide.
He gently lifted my chin.
“Look at me.”
I did.
His eyes searched mine.
“Are you regretting saying yes?”
My heart stopped.
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
He watched me carefully.
“Then what is it?”
I opened my mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because I couldn't tell him.
Not yet.
Damian's expression softened.
“You don't have to tell me tonight.”
I blinked.
“But I want you to know something.”
He stepped closer.
“Whatever is bothering you, you don't have to face it alone anymore.”
My chest tightened.
Those words should have comforted me.
Instead, they made the guilt inside me feel even heavier.
Because he had no idea how much I needed him.
And he had no idea why.
