Chapter 52

CHAPTER 52 ANGELA I stared at Damian for a long moment. He was standing in my doorway, waiting patiently for an answer. I couldn't keep everything from him. Not anymore. “I need to show you something.” His expression immediately became serious. “What?” I turned away from the door and walked into the living room. Damian followed me. I went to my purse and pulled out the papers I had been carrying around for days. My hands were slightly unsteady as I held them out to him. “What is this?” “I don't know.” He took the papers. His eyes moved across the first page. Then the second. His expression changed. “What am I looking at?” “Those documents were given to me.” “By who?” I hesitated. “I don't know.” He looked up at me. “Angela.” “I genuinely don't know who they were from.” He looked back down. My name. My employee number. My signature. Bank information. Emails. Documents connected to the contract. Everything that had been used to make it look like I had done something wrong. Damian's jaw tightened. “These aren't yours.” “No.” “Your signature?” “It's supposed to be.” “Supposed to be?” “Someone forged it.” He went through the pages again, much more carefully this time. I watched his face. He wasn't saying anything. That somehow frightened me more. “There are emails here.” “I know.” “Bank records.” “I know.” He lifted his eyes. “And photographs?” I nodded. “Yes.” He looked at the photographs. His expression hardened. “Where did these come from?” “I don't know.” He placed everything on the table. “Why didn't you tell me?” I looked down. “I didn't know what to do.” “You could have told me.” “I know.” His voice remained calm, but there was something underneath it. Anger. Not at me. At what he was seeing. “Someone is trying to make it look like you committed fraud.” “I know.” “And they're using your personal information.” “Yes.” He looked at me again. “How long have you had these?” I hesitated. “A few days.” His eyes narrowed. “And you've been carrying this around by yourself?” I nodded. “Angela.” “I didn't want to involve you.” “You're my girlfriend.” The words hit me harder than they should have. I looked away. He continued. “Whatever affects you affects me now.” My throat tightened. That was exactly the problem. He cared about me. And I still hadn't told him everything. “I was scared,” I admitted. His expression softened. “Of what?” I looked at the papers. “Of what would happen if these became public.” He moved closer. “Nothing is going to happen to you.” “You don't know that.” “I do.” “How?” “Because I'm going to find out who did this.” I looked at him. “You don't have to.” “I do.” “Damian—” “No.” His voice was firm. “You don't get to carry something like this alone.” I swallowed. He picked up the papers again. “Tomorrow, these are going to people I trust.” My heart jumped. “No.” He looked at me. “I don't want anyone else involved.” “Angela, this isn't something you can handle by yourself.” “I know.” “Then let me help.” I stared at him. Part of me wanted to say yes immediately. Another part of me wanted to run. Because accepting his help was exactly why I had accepted him in the first place. And now that he was standing in front of me, offering protection without even knowing how badly I needed it, the guilt returned. “Okay,” I whispered. Damian studied me. “Okay?” I nodded. “You can help.” He reached for my hand. His fingers closed gently around mine. “Good.” I looked at our hands. Then at him. And the guilt inside me became almost unbearable. Because he was helping me freely. He didn't know that his power was one of the reasons I had chosen him. And somehow, that made me feel even worse.
