“What's wrong?”
Damian was still on the phone.
His expression had become unreadable.
“I said I'm coming.”
He ended the call.
I studied his face.
“Is everything okay?”
He slipped his phone into his pocket.
“It's nothing I can't handle.”
“That doesn't look like nothing.”
He gave me a small smile.
“You worry too much.”
“And you hide too much.”
That made him chuckle.
“Come on.”
He reached for my hand.
I let him take it.
We continued walking toward the car, our fingers intertwined.
For a few minutes, he was quiet.
Then I squeezed his hand.
“Damian.”
“Yes?”
“Who called you?”
He looked at me.
“My brother.”
“You have a brother?”
His lips curved into a smile.
“You've never asked.”
“You've never told me.”
“Fair enough.”
I smiled.
“Tell me now.”
He looked ahead.
“He's in town.”
“Is that a bad thing?”
“No.”
“Then why did you look so serious?”
He stopped walking.
I stopped too.
He turned toward me.
“Because he has a habit of bringing trouble with him.”
I laughed.
“Your brother sounds interesting.”
“You haven't met him.”
“Maybe I should.”
“You will.”
The certainty in his voice made me smile.
“Already planning that far ahead?”
He stepped closer.
“You're my girlfriend now.”
My heart fluttered at the word.
Girlfriend.
It sounded different when he said it.
Possessive.
Certain.
Like he had been waiting for the right moment to claim the title.
I looked down at our joined hands.
“I still can't believe I said yes.”
“I can.”
I looked up.
“Why?”
“Because you wanted to.”
The words caught me off guard.
I couldn't answer.
Because technically, he was right.
I did want him.
I just didn't know if that was the only reason.
He lifted our joined hands and pressed a gentle kiss against my knuckles.
“I've been waiting for you to choose me.”
My chest tightened.
“And now I have.”
He smiled.
“Good.”
Then he leaned closer and whispered,
“Because I'm not planning to let you go.”
I smiled despite myself.
But somewhere deep inside me, the secret remained.
The threat.
The fear.
The reason I had needed him in the first place.
I had chosen Damian.
But I hadn't told him everything.
And I had no idea how long I could keep that secret.
