CHAPTER 71
DAMIAN
I woke up before Angela.
For a few seconds, I didn't move.
Her head was resting against my chest, one hand lightly placed between us, and my arm was still around her waist.
I looked down at her.
She was asleep.
Actually asleep.
Not sitting on my sofa for a few minutes before leaving.
Not resting her eyes after dinner.
She had stayed through the night.
With me.
A smile slowly found its way onto my face.
I tightened my arm around her just slightly.
She shifted.
I immediately stopped.
Her eyes opened a moment later.
She looked at me sleepily.
“What time is it?”
“Early.”
“That doesn't answer my question.”
I glanced at the clock.
“Seven.”
She closed her eyes again.
“I want to sleep.”
I smiled.
“Then sleep.”
She was quiet for a few seconds before opening one eye.
“Why are you staring at me?”
“Because you're in my arms.”
“And?”
“And I like it.”
She looked at me for a moment.
Then she settled back against my chest.
“Don't get used to it.”
“Too late.”
She smiled.
I felt it against me.
I lowered my head and kissed her forehead.
She didn't move away.
Instead, she shifted closer.
That surprised me.
“Comfortable?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
I ran my fingers gently through her hair.
She stayed quiet.
The morning sunlight slowly slipped through the curtains, filling the room with a soft golden glow.
There was something peaceful about it.
No phones.
No meetings.
No lawyers.
No business.
Just Angela.
And me.
I kissed her forehead again.
She looked up.
“You're doing that a lot.”
“I can stop.”
She stared at me.
Then quietly said, “I didn't say you should.”
I smiled.
“Noted.”
She reached up and touched my face.
“You're really okay now.”
“I told you I was.”
“You looked terrible yesterday.”
“I was sick.”
“You were complaining.”
“I was suffering.”
“You were dramatic.”
I laughed.
“You cooked terrible food for me and somehow I'm the dramatic one?”
She immediately pulled away.
“I knew you were going to bring that up.”
I caught her before she could move too far.
“Come here.”
She looked at me.
“Damian.”
“I’m not doing anything.”
“You're smiling.”
“I like having you this close.”
She gave me that small, restrained smile again.
I pulled her gently back into my arms.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I whispered, “Good morning, girlfriend.”
She looked up at me.
“Good morning.”
I kissed her forehead once more.
Then her cheek.
She didn't stop me.
I paused.
She looked at me.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You're doing it again.”
“Doing what?”
“Looking at me like that.”
I smiled.
“I'm allowed to look at my girlfriend.”
“You've said that already.”
“I'll probably say it again.”
She shook her head.
I leaned closer and kissed her softly.
It wasn't rushed.
It wasn't demanding.
Just a slow morning kiss.
When I pulled back, she remained close.
Her eyes stayed on mine.
I brushed my thumb across her cheek.
“I could get used to mornings like this.”
She was quiet.
Then she said, “You say that as if this happens every day.”
“It could.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Don't start.”
I laughed.
“I'm just talking.”
“I know.”
She rested her head against my chest again.
I held her.
And for once, I didn't need to ask what she was feeling.
She was here.
That was enough.
For now.
And as the morning continued around us, I found myself thinking something I hadn't expected to think so soon.
I didn't just want Angela in my nights.
I wanted her in my mornings too.
