Bound by Shadows

These words pierced my ears like cold poison, racing an icy trickle through my veins. He stepped from behind the trees, and his tall figure was outlined in pale moonlight. The air seemed to choke with the weight of his dominance, threatening to engulf me where I stood. My heart thundered, for every instinct yelled at me to flee, yet my feet anchored firmly into the damp earth. I wouldn't run. Not this time. "You think you can scare me?" I spat, my voice steadier than I had expected. "I'm not the weak girl you once knew, Logan." His lips twisted into a cruel smirk, his dark eyes narrowing. "Oh, Sarah," he murmured low, the tone dangerous. "You have always underestimated me. You thought you could plot behind my back, train and I wouldn't notice? Foolish. My muscles tensed as he began to circle me, a predator playing with his prey. Purposeful steps, each sounding out in the quietness of the forest, weighed heavy off him and upon my chest. I wouldn't back down not now, not ever, refusing to break the stare where my gaze was locked with his. "You don't scare me anymore," I said, clenching my fists. The lie tasted bitter, but I didn't dare show my fear. Logan's laugh was low, the flash in his eye malicious. "Is that so? Then why is your heart racing, little wolf? I can hear it. I can smell your fear." He came to a stop dead in front of me, leaned in so far that the heat of his breath caressed my skin. "But don't you worry, I'll make sure and enjoy breaking that newfound confidence of yours, too-just like I did before. His words were like pouring fire to the fire in my belly, and the embers of rebellion that I had kept inside me flared all at once. I took one step back-not to step away in fear-but the breadth I needed. "You will not break me," I returned, my voice lifting in intensity. "Not again. You've underestimated me this time, Logan." His smirk faltered for a moment, but it came surging back along with his dominance. "Bold words. But words mean nothing if you can't back them up." Without any warning, Logan lunged at me, his body a blur in the dimly lit room. My body instinctively responded, honed from weeks of secret training with Alex. I dodged his attack with grace and precision, spinning back to face him. He turned to her now, an amusement-irritation twist on his face. "So little wolf has learned some tricks. Let's see how long you can keep this up." He came at me hard and aggressive this time, the strikes coming endlessly on and on, testing my limits of training to extreme levels. I moved and dodged, giving back where I could, but he was stronger and more experienced. My body screamed against the exertion of muscles as my breaths came in ragged gasps. "Getting tired already?" Logan jeered, the words oozing from his voice. "You'll never win, Sarah. You're outmatched. You always have been. But his words never did seep into my brain, because in turn, I tuned into the power stirring inside of me, the one growing since the beginning of my defiance, humming just beneath my skin, ready to be let out. Maybe I am, I said, though my voice didn't shake beneath its weariness. But I'm not the same girl you dragged into this pack. And I won't let you take everything from me again. Logan lunged at me one last time, and when his hands reached out to get me, I finally let go of the restraint that was holding me. That power surged through me-wild, untamed-as the world around us rippled. Shadows writhed around my body, living entities answering the call of my anger, of my determination. The smile faltered on Logan's face, his eyes narrowing as if he felt the shift in the air. "What is this?" The mockery was gone from his tone, laced with wariness instead. I didn't say a word. I just let the shadows surge in, swirling and twisting in upon themselves until they lashed at him. He tumbled back, surprised for a second, then it was as if his feet dug in and held fast. "Ah, you've finally discovered your little gift." This time Logan's tone was ice cold. "I wondered how long it would take." His words cut only skin. He'd known about my power? All along? "You knew," I repeated, low and more threatening, "You knew and kept me in chains." Logan's smile returned this time a lot nastier than before. "Of course I knew. Why do you think I brought you here? You are more use than you obviously realize, Sarah. But you have wasted enough of my time. It is time to finish this." He charged again, but this time I was ready. The shadows seemed to writhe at my will, growing a life between us. Logan hit the shield with the force that sent him backward. "You're not as invincible as you think," I said, stepping forward. The churning shadows around me felt comforting and terrifying at once. "And I'm not your pawn anymore." Logan snarled, the mask of control breaking. "This isn't over, Sarah," he spat, "you have no idea what you've started." With that, he turned and disappeared into the shadows-the storm that had crossed over into the night, leaving quiet in its wake. I stood there a moment, my body electrified with adrenaline. Leaving me alone in the silent woods, the shadows began to dissipate into thin air. My body was shaking from the fear but no I won’t afford to dwell on it. The parting words of Logan that kept reminding me over and over again that the fight was far from over. But for the first time in what felt like forever, I wasn't afraid and I was quite surprised, I had faced him, and I had won. As I turned to head back toward the small cabin where Alex and I were planning our next move, one thought seared itself into my mind: It was no longer just about me fighting for myself. I fought for freedom-for me, my child, and every soul whose life had been crushed by Logan's rule. And I wouldn't stop until I saw him fall.
