I looked down at him, and my voice was icy. "No, Logan. You will.
The clearing was quiet save for the trees rustling in the cold wind. Alex paced a ways off, frustration etched on his face.
"We have to get out of here, Sarah," he said roughly, voice low and urgent. "Logan is not going to give up until he finds you. You don't owe anything to this pack—just take the opportunity and leave."
I turned to him, shaking my head. "Nein. Running isn't an option anymore. If I run now, he'll never stop hunting me. And what about the others? The ones too scared to fight back? Someone has got to stand up to him.
Alex stepped forward, his jaw setting. "And you think that someone has to be you? Sarah, you're strong, but Logan… he doesn't fight fair. He'll use every weakness, every advantage. You've seen what he's capable of."
"I've lived through it," I said, firm in my voice. "That's why it has to be me."
The word had barely left my mouth when a chillingly familiar voice cut through the air.
"How touching.
We spun around. Logan emerged from the trees, his towering figure silhouetted against the soft, moonlit light. His enforcers were positioned at either side of him, their faces impassive, faithful to a fault. His eyes, black and menacing, locked onto mine, his smirking face sending shivers down my spine.
Did you really think that you could plot against me, Sarah?" Logan asked, and his voice was deceptively calm. "That you could train in secret and rally dissenters and I wouldn't notice? You've always been bold, but boldness without power is just stupidity."
I stepped forward, ignoring the way Alex moved protectively in front of me. "And you've always underestimated me, Logan. That's your mistake.
His smirk twisted into a snarl. "You've grown a backbone since I dragged you here, I'll give you that. But a backbone won't save you."
"Neither will fear," I retorted. "And that's all you have, Logan. You rule by fear because it's the only way you know how to hold power. But fear fades. Loyalty doesn't.
Logan's laughter was harsh and cold. "Loyalty?" He swung to Alex, his smile stretching cruelly. "You mean him? My beta, sneaking around behind my back? You think his little betrayal will save you?"
"Don't do this, Logan," Alex said, his tone even but tight. "It doesn't have to end like this.
Logan raised an eyebrow. "Oh, but it does. She needs to learn her place, and you… you'll pay for forgetting yours."
Without warning, he lunged.
"Move!" I shouted at Alex, shoving him aside as Logan closed the distance between us.
Our bodies clashed, the raw strength in his attack radiating into me. I did not falter. Every strike held months of training and a lifetime of pain, each one meeting his with force.
"You think this makes you strong?" Logan sneered, grabbing my wrist mid-strike. "This is nothing, Sarah. You're still the same scared girl I broke all those months ago.
I wrenched my arm free, my voice rising. "You didn't break me. You just made me stronger."
He swung again, but this time I ducked, landing a solid punch to his ribs. Logan staggered, surprise flashing across his face before it turned to rage.
"I should've killed you the moment you defied me," he growled, his voice like venom.
"And you should have realized you can't keep everyone under your thumb forever," I spat, moving around him. "Your time is over, Logan. They aren't afraid of you anymore."
He lunged at me once more, and I readied myself, standing my ground. Our struggle was brutal, each blow echoing in the stillness of the clearing. I felt every bruise forming, every muscle straining, but I refused to back down.
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see that Alex was fighting two enforcers, not falling down, but outnumbered and having trouble. I wouldn't have been able to take one more second more of that.
"You're finished," Logan spat out, clenching down harder around my arm.
"No," I said my voice without a quaver. "You are.
With a surge of strength, I broke free and immediately sank my fist into his jaw. He staggered, I waited for him to fall but he didn’t then I didn't waste any time. I tackled him to the ground, pinning him beneath me.
"Enough!" I shouted, my voice ringing out. "It's over, Logan. You've lost."
He glared up at me, a mixture of fury and disbelief on his face. "You think this means anything? You think they'll follow you? You're nothing!
"They'll follow because I'll give them something you never could—hope," I said, my voice firm.
For a moment, the clearing was silent. The wavering of Logan's enforcers was instantaneous as they watched their leader fall.
"Stand down," I told them. "This fight is over. You don't have to follow him anymore."
One by one, they lowered their arms and backed off. Alex came forward, his face wary but optimistic.
"You did it," he said softly.
I straightened, my body pounding but my spirit unyielding. Logan was lying at my feet, defeated but still furious.
"This isn't over," he spat. "You'll pay for this."
I spun back to the pack members who had stopped at the edge of the clearing, my voice elevating. "The Nightfall Pack has lived in fear for too long. That ends tonight. Together, we can rebuild-stronger, better. But it begins with a choice. Who will you stand with?
The silence afterward was thick, until they each came forward one by one, promising their loyalty not to me, but to a future free of Logan's tyranny.
Alex shifted to stand beside me, his voice low. "What now?"
I looked out at the faces before me, at the life growing inside me, and felt a fierce determination take hold.
"Now, we fight for something worth keeping," I said.
And as the first light of dawn broke over the trees, I knew this was just the beginning.
For the first time, I wasn't afraid. I was ready.
