“Do you think Jean will – think I am – overdressed?” Susi enquired anxiously. “It will not matter what the Comte thinks,” Trina replied. “You have to concentrate, Mama, on the Marchioness. Don’t forget to sympathise with her about her search for the Elixir of Youth and say it is a recipe that you have always wanted to find yourself.” Finally Susi was ready and, when they walked downstairs together, Trina knew that the Comte was delighted with her efforts. To make Susi feel at ease he talked to her in a way that brought the colour to her cheeks, which were rather pale and made her eyes shine. ‘He is just the sort of husband Mama should have,’ Trina told herself as she watched them drive away in the open carriage. It was to take them the long way round so that they could arrive in style
