40When May came out of the bathroom, I snagged another bottle of pale ale, said my good nights, and crossed the hall to my room. The lemony scent of furniture polish greeted me. I flicked on the lights and saw vacuum cleaner tracks crisscrossing the gray carpet. The white coverlet neatly covered the bed. Today’s twisted towel had the shape of a swan. All quiet and tidy. I could deal with the questions nagging at the back of my brain. I settled into the desk chair and booted up my tablet. Logging onto the sss account, I found the drafts folder empty. A sign that nothing in May’s situation had changed. I was certain Holger was monitoring the Chinese. If they’d issued a statement, he’d have alerted me. I could take a few minutes to think about the situation before I checked in with him.
