THE TENSION WAS SO THICK in the keep, I feared it might take physical form. The place was oppressive, making you feel small and breathless. I had never seen the keep before, my previous comings and goings in Ankhsis’s castle being quite limited until the attack. As I walked in with Magnus I realized I hadn’t missed much. Thick walls, tiny windows, an entrance so heavily reinforced, not even a trueborn supervamp could break through it, and the darkness… That was the hardest to tolerate. It was such a huge contrast from the glistening walls of Ankhsis buildings, that the fine hairs on my back stood on end, alerting me there’d be danger everywhere.
