Janet was strangely calm when she opened the door. “Thank you so much for coming over on a Saturday. Come on in.” She ushered them into the living room, where they stood uncomfortably. Adam immediately began looking around for something out of the ordinary. She’d sounded so panicked when she called, and now he couldn’t see how this was an emergency at all.
“When I talked to you on the phone, you said something strange was happening?” Adam asked. He stuck his empty hands in his pockets and looked around the seemingly quiet living room. Cheryl had persuaded him to leave the book in the car even though he desperately wanted to carry it with him into the house.
