“ What’s that?” Cheryl pointed through the windshield at the column of smoke billowing in the air as they turned onto Central Avenue. “It looks like there’s a fire.” Adam leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes. Burning the book had taken everything out of him. Cheryl gripped the steering wheel a little too tightly as she drove toward the smoke. She’d always hated driving other people’s cars, but Adam had been so out of it that there was no way she’d let him drive. She didn’t realize the plume of smoke was coming from her building until she rounded the corner to see the street blocked off and firetrucks parked haphazardly out front.
