Chapter 5: Show me what you've got

1040 Words
“What the f*ck?” Beau heard the man from the bar gasp behind them. She turned around and snarled. “You! What do you think you’re doing here?” Rage ran beside her, so they were back-to-back against four men twice their size. “Helping you, what does it look like?” Roman was still out cold, but he could stir any time. Beau does not like complications in anything that she does. This man is nothing but a complication tonight. “You’re a fool! You don’t know what you’ve gotten yourself into!” Insulted, Rage kept his cool and proceeded with his defensive stance. “I can take care of myself, thank you.” As expected, Roman woke up. A single blow on the shin was not enough to keep him down. He staggered, and two men helped him stay up. His mouth bloodied and his eyes---his eyes shocked Rage. They were not human. Eyes are the mirror of the soul, and when someone’s eyes change, that tends to give the impression that they’re not who they used to be. Rage has seen his fair share of paranormal movies to know that what he’s face to face with is no longer human. Roman chuckled. “You brought food. That’s great. The Theron leader and food in one attack. Kill them both, make it fast because one might look for them, but I will need Beau Hardy’s head as proof when we visit Theron community first thing in the morning.” He ordered his men. Rage stared into the impassive face of the man named Roman as the lightning struck. “What are you?” “Oh, you don’t want to know, human. Don't worry, your friends will not miss you. They will think you left this place without them, and that's the end of your story. You humans just don't know when to take a hike, and look where your bravado took you." “Roman, let him go. This is between you and me,” Beau announced. “It’s me you want. Let him go, they’re just tourists.” The massive man stepped forward and Rage caught a glimpse of claws. His eyes widened. Claws! It happened so fast, one second he was ten feet away from him, the next, they were only a feet apart. Roman raised his claws and hit Rage in the face. Beau didn’t see that coming because two other men were on her. Beau fired powerful punches and hit her assailants in the face; she heard the crunch of bone. It was horrifying yet wonderful to hear. She had them, and Beau vowed she wasn’t going to lose. She punched, blocked, and kicked again. Rage was in shocking pain as he lay sprawled on the ground. He crawled backward and hoped Knox would come looking for him. The wounds seemed to burn his skin. Roman stood in front of him. His claws were still out, and behind him was Beau fighting skillfully against four men. Her fluid motions mesmerize him. He had never seen a woman fight as beautifully as Beau. “Hey, don’t you have any last words?” Roman kicked his foot. "You're going to die tonight. Do you understand that?" “No, I refuse to die, especially in your hands.” After saying that with conviction, Rage felt a surge of power inside him. Like an avalanche of newfound strength. Roman’s eyes registered pure shock and terror as he stood up. “Y-you’re like us?” Beau heard this, dropped the limp man in her hand, and turned around. Like Roman, she was stunned. “What?” Rage wasn’t hearing any of this. The animal inside took over. He had one goal---to kill Roman. His instincts took control, and the next thing he felt was warm blood squirting in his face. It felt like an eternity. He felt disconnected from the world; all there was was blood and gore. And then someone hit him on his head. Before his vision dimmed, the last thing he saw was Beau. Cory and the others came to Beau's rescue, and they saw the black wolf attacking Roman. They also saw Beau grab a brick and hit the black wolf on the head so hard that it fell on top of Roman's mangled body. Two other men, who they assumed were Roman's men, ran as fast as they could. "Beau, what happened here?" Cory asked, her eyes traveled from their leader to the black wolf. "We don't have a black wolf. Is he from another pack?" "Cory, there's no black wolf ever. The last black wolf was seen many, many years ago---could he be the..." Ridick, one of Beau's friends, suggested. They all watched as the black wolf returned to its human form. Cory's eyes widened. "This is the man from the pub! He's a wolf? Why can't I smell dog stench?" Beau was under the impression that the man had no idea he was a wolf. Normal wolves can easily return to their human form because they've practiced their whole lives. She is also certain she heard him ask Roman what he was when his claws unfurled. "Riddick, take your jacket off. We will take him to the cabin at the foot of the mountain. Whoever this man is----he's not aware he's like us. We will learn more about him and his pack when he wakes up." Beau decided. "But what if he is the..." Cory insisted. "He's a wolf; that's what we know for sure. Just because he's a black wolf means he's the long-lost Alpha Theron had been waiting for a long time, Cory." Fear gripped Beau. She was just too careful to let it show. If this man is the Alpha---, that means her work is done, and all that she has worked for would be tossed aside. She can't deal with that. Leading Theron is her life. If it's taken from her, her purpose in life is gone as well. "What about his friends inside?" "Go tell them he's with me," Beau instructed. "He's been ogling at me from the moment we arrived. Tell them he's crashing at my place tonight. Men like them are always chasing panties."
