CHAPTER 2: A New Beginning

397 Words
Ethan sat in his darkened apartment, staring blankly at the ceiling. The room felt colder than ever, though he wasn’t sure if it was the absence of warmth or the emptiness inside him. The engagement ring was gone, left behind in Olivia’s apartment, but the pain of betrayal clung to him like a shadow. His phone vibrated on the table. He didn’t have to look to know who it was. Olivia. Her name flashed on the screen, the same name that once made his heart race with love. Now, it only made his stomach twist in anger and sadness. The call went to voicemail, joining the dozens of others he had ignored. He exhaled sharply, running a hand through his unkempt hair. “I need to move on,” he muttered to himself. And so, he did. Two weeks later, Ethan packed his bags, resigned from his job, and left the city that held too many painful memories. He didn’t have a destination in mind—only the need for distance. When he arrived in his new city, everything felt different. The skyline was unfamiliar, the streets filled with strangers, the air carrying the scent of fresh possibilities. His new apartment was small, barely furnished, but it was his. A fresh start. A chance to heal. He quickly found a job at a marketing firm, throwing himself into work to keep his mind occupied. But even in the chaos of deadlines and meetings, there were moments of silence where Olivia’s laughter would haunt him. He tried to drown it out, but heartbreak had a way of lingering. Then, one afternoon in the office cafeteria, a voice pulled him from his thoughts. “Hey, I’m Lena. You’re the new guy, right?” Ethan looked up, meeting the warm brown eyes of a woman with an easy smile. She was dressed casually, her blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail, exuding an effortless confidence. “Yeah,” he replied, forcing a small nod. “Ethan.” “Mind if I sit here?” He hesitated for a moment. He hadn’t made an effort to connect with anyone since moving, afraid of opening up again. But something about her seemed… different. “Sure.” As she sat across from him, the tightness in his chest loosened just a little. Maybe just maybe moving on wouldn’t be so impossible after all.
