The Claim That Could Kill Her

761 Words
The decision was made before Adrian spoke it aloud. He felt it settle in his bones—heavy, irreversible. When he turned back toward the Elders, his expression was no longer torn. It was carved from stone. “Take me to her,” he said. Marcus stiffened. “If she dies—” “She dies knowing she was chosen,” Adrian replied. “Not discarded.” Helena watched him closely, then nodded once. “Clear the tower.” The eastern watchtower smelled of cold stone and fear. Brielle lay curled on the narrow bed, her breathing shallow, her skin burning despite the chill. Every heartbeat felt like it was tearing her apart from the inside. Then— She felt him. The bond surged violently, sharp enough to steal her breath. “Adrian,” she whispered. The door opened. He filled the doorway—broad shoulders tense, eyes glowing faintly gold, jaw clenched as though holding back something monstrous. She tried to sit up. Pain exploded through her chest. Adrian was at her side instantly, hands hovering, afraid to touch. “You shouldn’t move,” he said softly. Tears slipped down her temples. “I thought you abandoned me.” The words cut deeper than any blade. “I would never,” he said fiercely. “I stayed away because it was killing you.” She laughed weakly. “It’s killing me anyway.” Silence stretched between them, heavy and fragile. He took a slow breath. “There’s something I have to do,” Adrian said. “And I need you to understand the risk.” She studied his face—really looked at him for the first time without fear. The strength. The restraint. The pain he carried so carefully. “If this is goodbye,” she whispered, “then I don’t want it gentle. I want it honest.” His throat worked. “This isn’t goodbye,” he said. “It’s a claim.” Her eyes widened. “I might hurt you,” he continued, voice breaking. “I might not be able to stop. If your body rejects the bond—” “Then I die,” she finished quietly. He nodded once. She reached for his hand, weak but certain. “Then choose me anyway.” The bond roared. Adrian’s control snapped. His eyes flared gold as he pulled her against him, inhaling sharply as her scent flooded his senses. His wolf surged forward—not violent, but desperate, possessive, reverent. He pressed his forehead to hers. “Tell me to stop.” She shook her head. “I’m yours.” That was all it took. Adrian lowered his mouth to her neck. The moment his teeth pierced her skin, the world exploded. Brielle screamed as fire tore through her veins—searing, consuming, unbearable. Her back arched as the bond slammed into completion, her heart racing wildly. Adrian growled deep in his chest, biting harder before forcing himself to pull back, blood staining his lips. “Breathe,” he commanded softly. “Stay with me.” She gasped, fingers clawing into his shoulders as pain and heat warred inside her. Her vision blurred. Darkness crept at the edges. “I’m scared,” she whispered. “I’ve got you,” he said fiercely, holding her as though the world might rip her away. “Fight. Please.” Her body convulsed. Then— Something changed. The fire cooled—settling, reshaping rather than destroying. Strength spread slowly through her limbs, unfamiliar but steady. Her breathing evened. Her heart slowed. Adrian froze, sensing it instantly. “You’re still here,” he breathed. Brielle opened her eyes. They glowed faintly silver. Adrian sucked in a sharp breath. “That’s impossible,” he whispered. She felt different—stronger, clearer, awake in a way she had never been before. “I don’t hurt anymore,” she said, wonder threading her voice. The door burst open. The Elders rushed in—then stopped dead. Marcus stared at Brielle. Alive. Marked. Awakened. “What have you done?” he whispered. Helena stepped closer, eyes shining. “What her blood has always hidden.” Brielle sat up fully now, strength holding her steady. “I’m not weak,” she said quietly. Adrian stood beside her, possessive, unyielding. “She is my mate,” he said. “And if the law stands against her—” He let his wolf surface just enough to shake the walls. “Then the law will fall.” Silence gripped the tower. For the first time, Marcus looked afraid.
