Ada sat sullenly after the telling off from her mother. However, all eyes were now on the magnificent pie in the middle of the table. I confess, it smelt and looked delicious as Miss Ruby carved out portions, and Phoebe handed them around the table. “My special Fidgety-Pie,” Miss Ruby declared proudly. “Had a delivery of some fresh pastry flour the other day,” she said, half to herself, but with a pointed look in my direction. “Which should be lovely, now that I’ve sieved all the flour mites and dead insects out of it,” “I’m sure it will be up to your usual standard, Ruby,” said Matthew, looking keenly for his plate to arrive. “Your lordship’s favourite,” Miss Ruby explained and looking pleased with Matthew’s remarks.
