Chapter 7Sounds of commotion drew my eyes to the window. A pair of candy-striped legs strode past, briefly blocking the light. I pressed forward to get a better view. A moment later, Matthew bunched up beside me. We were entering the outskirts of the town of Weskdale, and the carriage had become caught up in some sort of procession. The candy-striped legs belonged to an impossibly tall man in a tailcoat and top hat. It took a moment for me to realise the man was on stilts. “It’s a circus!” said Matthew delightedly, anticipating my thought.
