JANET POV The loud sound of a door closing forces me to open my eyes. “Cherry, it’s not 5:00 yet let me sleep” I say still sleepy trying to reach for my bed side table and it's not there. I sit up and my head hurts like hell. Turns out half a bottle of high-end red wine was not a good idea. I had just three glasses. It's the same thing!!!!! Whatever. I look around the dimly lit room and I can't recognise anything here. Because it's not your room dummy. Shit! Memories from last night flows in like a file loading data. I try to stand and the sharp pain in between my legs remind me that every action has consequences. What was I thinking? How? The reasonable explanation for yesterday is…. I was tipsy because there is no way I did what I did. I can't find my phone or my purse, just my clothes lying around the room. I grab them and rush into the bathroom like a mad woman. I have work today, I have work today!! I run out of the room and run back in because I have no means of transportation. I look around the room and a pile of cash and a business card is sitting neatly on a table with the biggest mirror I have ever seen. I look like s**t. I take just enough to transport me home and the business card. Really? What? I slept with a stranger, I might as well know if he is a serial killer or not! I walk out the room confidently, who am I kidding? I am running down the stairs and out of the club like I'm being chased. I hail a cab and yell my address to him and he looks at me concerned before driving. I look outside and it's not completely dark, I guess it's morning? “Please, what's the time?” I ask. “5:30” he replies, still facing the road. So, I have two hours before work and it'll take me an hour to get to work from my place and I look and smell like s**t, just great. I am never clubbing again. The car stops and I run towards my house and I hear the car honking behind me, I forgot to pay. “Sorry, just take everything” I say handing the whole cash I carried to him. Then run up the stairs and a brief pause to catch my breath and then continue till I reach the third floor. You know you could've just used the elevator? Thanks for the timely information. I ring the bell once, twice and then my sister's voice calls out from inside the room “Who's there?” “It's me, Jane” I hear the door unlocking and when she opens the door her eyes widen. I push past her and fall on the sofa. “Why do you look like you fought with George” That's our neighbor's cat by the way. “Thanks for noticing” I stand up and walk towards my room and she follows. “Is that all? I looked for you at the club yesterday, you left your bag and phone at the bar and disappeared. Did it ever cross your mind that maybe your sister was worried?” She says lifting her brows in a frown while crossing her arms. My sister Cherry is petite like me but she has blue eyes and red hair while I have brown eyes and black hair. She's two shades lighter than me. “Sorry, I guess I was tipsy and got carried away” I say, picking out my work clothes. “I know you got carried away, what I don't know is where, where were you carried to?” She says still looks serious and honestly these are the times I wonder how she secured a job as a software engineer in one of the biggest companies in New York. “I was…… I had a one night stand in a room somewhere in the club and I know it was stupid you don't have to pinch your nose and shut your eyes like I robbed the bank or something” I say rolling my eyes because she's just being dramatic. “Excuse me!! You’ve been in New York for barely a month and you are already making stupid decisions like this, I know it’s one of the hallmarks of your personality but this?” She stops and recollect then sighs “I'm sorry if that came out the wrong way” she says coming closer and I move back. She's talking about Ryan and my business, she thinks this whole breakup, me being broke and moving to New York is my fault, insisting the signs were clear but I ignored them out of stupidity. “I guess you're right, I'm just a stupid sister who makes stupid decisions that involved dating a guy who didn't touch me for months and having the best s*x of my life with a stranger” saying it out loud made me realize that maybe I am just stupid. “Don't say that, you make decisions that could cost you a lot but that doesn't mean you're stupid” she says innocently holding my hands. “Define stupid” I say bluntly and she laughs. “Okay, fine You're right” she says after sobering up. “Wait! What? This is the point where you convince me otherwise” I say annoyed. “Why?” She says genuinely sounding confused. “Because that's what….. you know what never mind” I say turning to shut my wardrobe. “I'm your elder sister, it's my duty to protect you” we say in unison. “I know” I reply and we fall silent before busting into a fit of laughter. She sounds exactly like my mom. “You sound exactly like mom” I say and she nods, we fall quiet again and she hugs me till we fall into the bed. “Okay seriously you need to shower” she says choking and I swat her with a pillow and she dodges. She sits up and I make my way to the bathroom, I take off my clothes and turn on the shower but before I can scrub off the smell of s*x my bath time gets interrupted with a loud bang on my door. I pick my towel to cover myself and open the door. “What the f**k cherry” I say to a pale looking cherry. “Why do you have…. my boss business card” she says frantically holding the business card I picked from the hotel room earlier in her two hands like it's gold. “Are you sure it belongs to your boss because I found it in the hotel room this morning on top of a pile of cash…” I say stepping out of the bathroom to examine it properly. “I work at Kings Media Ltd, you think I won't know my boss?” She says looking anxious. I take the card and bol dly written KINGS MEDIA LTD. DEVON KINGS +1 212-333-0145 Fuck. my. life. I slept with DEVON KINGS.
